I'd start with a midfield three of Kovacic, Jorginho and Kante. The former two are our most press resistant midfielders (the jury on Billy is still out for me - he's had only two full games at the highest level) and Kante with his energy and the defensive stability he offers is a given.

My problem with those 3 is a lack of goals. I really enjoyed when we played with Gilmour, Barkley and Mount in midfield but I can see Frank using Kovacic, Kante and Barkley playing the more advanced role in midfield, with Mount, Oli and Willian as the attacking three.

Oli gets the nod over Tammy due to his link up play and the fact he is in better goal scoring form than Tammy.

I agree in general, I don't love seeing them play together against your average Premier League side, that sits deep against us. Against City however we won't have to play against a low block, so I value good ball retention and defensive solidity over the goal threat Mount or Barkley offer, who both aren't great when they're pressed.

I didn’t see that coming when I seen the line up I have to admit but yet again Frank has nailed the team line up.

I thought he got the subs spot on as well, really impressed tonight. He’s got some big results this season against the top sides. This has put us in a great position to push on for 3rd.

Despite all the apprehensiveness about the lineup online, we could have scored 3/4 goals tonight against one of the top sides in Europe.

The future for us is very bright with Frank and Jody at the helm, exciting times at the club!

To be honest I felt our win had more to do with luck than with how we played :blush2: It could have gone either way. Pleased as punch it went ours, don't get me wrong :laugh2:

Top 4 for this season would exceed my expectation. Should we lose out on a CL ticket, I will still be happy with this season, and I can't wait for the next one with our new players.

Our luck was in yesterday, we didn't out play them we got the rub of the green and I think we deserve some luck to be honest

Fair enough, I felt we knew what we were doing and thoroughly deserved the win. I heard somewhere our expected goals was 2.8 + 1 for the penalty compared to city’s expected goals being only 0.8.

Of course it doesn’t give the full picture but shows that even the stats are clear we should have comfortably won. I think putting it down to just luck is harsh.

I agree, I didn’t expect us to make top 4 so it would be a massive success if we get it, especially if we manage to get 3rd!

The .8 part of 2.8 goals would have been Michy's contribution to the match had he been in the squad

I think they looked completely toothless with all the possession they had and we looked like scoring every time we broke on them, had both teams taken the big chances offered up I reckon it would've finished 4-2 to us.

It was also pleasantly surprising a Manager choosing a bold starting lineup as opposed to the last few years when we have been going into big games with 6-7 Defensive players and a false 9.

We had some half chances, Mount blasted wide, Barkley had two shots charged down and one winning us a corner.

With the exception of Pulisic I don't recall too many good chances.

We scored 2 and Pulisic should buried the one cleared off the line and Mount had a big chance which he rushed.

City Scored 1 and potentially should've had another when Sterling hit the post, other than that they didn't have any other clear cut opportunities.

Steve McLaren on sky sports🙈

Just called Jody morris, Yodi morris, as if he was reffering to a spanish midfielder, he cant seem to shake that dutch accent.

Then goes on to claim united are better placed to challenge for a league title next season, because of there history, and the exciting tram ole is building. I think someone needs to show him the keague table from the last 7 years.

Embarrassing.

People really need to stop thinking history helps teams win titles. It took Liverpool 30 years to use their history to win another title!!

We scored one in open play.

Ah,  the Wally with the brolly, sky sports bringing on people that are totally irrelevant to today's game. They will be wheeling in John Aldridge, Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan next, O hang on a minute?

Which was one more than they did.

BBC match stats have Chelsea with 15 shots with 10 on target. City with 11 shots and just 2 on target. City dominated possession but couldn't break our defense down. We should all think about that before slagging off Christensen and Rudiger.
