January 31, 20215 yr Credit to u/Abster_P from the Chelsea Sub-Reddit. On the performance: " Well the performance itself, for me it was very complete, both defensively and offensively. We had to be very, very strong physically against many powerful players and with may duels in the air. We had to fight for the second ball, and you have to be very aware for all the second balls that fly back again in your back. But we did the work, with the three centre-backs and two sixes absolutely outstanding. The two guys on the sides did a lot of effort to support, and the front three supported the defensive work too. We managed to concede only one shot, which was absolutely amazing. And importantly we never lost patience, we controlled the game, created a lot of chances, and were very good in the counter-pressing. So overall very happy that we got this well-deserved win." On Alonso's recall: "We had the reason, it was not because we were unhappy with Chilwell but we opted for more size to defend set pieces. Marcos is used to playing in this role, he has good timing arriving in the box. In the end we are very happy that he scored the second goal that finished the game." On the formation/selections: " Well if we manage to find a starting eleven that can guarantee us to win 20 in a row we will not change it. But it's of course very unlikely this will happen. We decided very late for the back three and two sixes, because of the impact we expected from Burnley, and they did very, very well. And we made changes offensively just to have different characteristics and give everyone a chance to show up in competition. It's super-hard in selection, or maybe also super-easy because I'm giving everyone the chance to show their abilities." On Hakim Ziyech: "We had a normal process of a recommendation [from the medical staff] and we had some words that he is in a personal overload in the last five weeks. He has a history to be a risk for injury when he plays for five weeks of overload. That’s why, the pure physical recommendation of the staff was for him to not play more than 30 minutes. We offered him a full break to not be on the bench and even play 30 minutes and he said okay, let’s do the break now and we can start using him again next week full-on. Let’s give him the break now because what will we do if we lose someone after 15 minutes and lose the opportunity for an offensive change and that was the only reason." On CHO as a wingback: "Why not? Of course we knew him, there were big rumours around him and Bayern Munich but we knew before if you are interested in football, upcoming players, he was in the focus way before I ever thought about being his manager. He can have his input on the line, he has the ability to be decisive with his runs, his speed and at the moment we have opted for this structure. He can play in the half positions offensively, this is clear and we wanted to take the chance against Wolves so we went with Chilly and him, today it was Marcos and him. He had another good game, if we can improve the precision of our guys in the box then maybe we can score more goals." On Timo Werner: "He is totally into it, he gives everything. You can see, like every striker in the world, they guys are sensitive and nothing helps better than goals. If they miss the goals for a certain time then it isn’t the same for them, it is not special to Timo, it happens with every striker in the world. As long as he has the impact, works like he worded today, we will support him. We missed some chances to use him in counter attacks which is his big strength, he has pure speed. We need to improve to bring him into situations to be decisive for us. He was confident to play but that is something you cannot demand, you either have it or you don’t. But it is no problem, maybe he just needs to find an easy goal to bring out the last percent. " On his dominant playstyle: "It is the quality of the players, the structure that we gave them and from there they did very well. They have the confidence to keep the ball and when we have the ball, the intensity that we put in when we lose it. We have intensive runs as well. Ball possession alone means nothing but if we have the ability to control the games then why not use it.."
January 31, 20215 yr Very similar playing style to Conte when he first switched to 3-4-3, CHO's marauding runs akin to Moses when he was tearing sh*t up at RWB. Overload the middle and create space for the wings, works very well, much more thoughtful than random crossing under Frank when we wouldn't even consider playing through the middle. We have an element of surprise going for us, However, it's a matter of time until teams start finding us out. Conte couldn't adapt to that, hopefully Tuchel is more flexible tactically.

Except we never played through the middle during the Conte days. It was always move the ball as fast as possible to Hazard and the wingbacks. Today our midfield can create better but our strikeforce is mediocre. Hope that changes very soon.

I am confident Tuchel will adapt they don't call him the professor not nothing. Wasn't sure about him before as didn't really rate him as a top coach but since he's signed and having done a some reading on him he's good very very good he's absolutely a Top Coach with a brilliant footballing brain.

The strikers and attackers haven't score goals for ages, but the way Tuchel has this team play offense; I am sure the goals will be pouring in. And it might just start with the Spuds, as I expect that to be a bit more open game and guys like Timo and Pulisic will find the spaces they need to attack the back line.

It'll be a backs to the wall defending from them with Son and Moura ready to pounce. Another cagey game.

January 31, 20215 yr Anyone know Tuchel’s record against Jose? Can’t imagine many times where they would have come up against each other - apart from PSG v United?
January 31, 20215 yr This may draw some anger as it doesn’t reflect well on SFL, but as i said to Gol on the match thread - on this idea that Kovacic and Kante can’t play together in a midfield two, we have to allow for the possibility that the pairing itself wasn’t the problem. It may have been the coaching. I guess we will find out.

Both of them bring a lot kova was our player of the season, you saw today the energy and rapid transitions of him and kante can form a good partnership they would be formidable, him turning over play kante breaking up play and sweeping up

Both Kante and Kovacic love to roam a bit forward, you can't rely on either of them to sit back. Maybe with the back 3 it won't be a bigger problem but it has been a problem. If you want to drop someone in order to play Kante you need to see who fits more with Kante and I think the answer is Jorginho since he sits more back and allows Kante to push forward and to naturally read the game and press, Kante also runs with the ball, worse than Kovacic but he's still that kind of a player. If we're going to have most of the possession anyway it's up to Tuchel to decide if he prefers to have both Kante and Kovacic running with the ball, doing a similar role, or Kante and Jorginho where Kante will have a more natural and free role and Jorginho more disciplined, sitting back.

And in fact - there is a bit of a case of short memories as we did have some good performances last season with a Kova-Kante pivot. Crystal Palace at home and there were a couple of others I think. Speaking of which, it was Tuchel's coaching that duped the world into thinking Henrikh Mkhitaryan was a top class player.

We'll see what happens, I'm not saying that you're wrong but to me there is more risks involved when you change something that works. For me it's most likely that Spurs will wait for a counter and park the bus just like Burnley did. In these type of games it's important to control the possession well and it's safe to say that the deep midfield duo of Kovacic-Jorginho does that job well. Jose WILL prepare his team to exploit our gaps on the wings when our wingers stay further up. Even if Alonso did well in this game I would still go back to rely on Chilwell in the next one, let's be honest as much as Alonso can contribute to the attack he has proven to be a huge liability in defense so I hope that we don't play into Jose's hands.
January 31, 20215 yr Impressive start. He had no time to work before Wolves but today was really positive. Absolutely battered Burnley and they were lucky they escaped with a two goal loss tbh. You may say it was just Burnley but they were flying high after beating Liverpool at Anfield and Aston Villa and we completely shut them down. So credit to the players and Tuchel for that.

If Peacock Farrell was in goal instead of Nick Pope it would have been 6.

Yes what to do with Kante, the player Tuchel has wanted for some time, will prove to be very important in Tuchel's career here. Far as Jose goes, surprise him. Go with the pace options, CHO at LWB and James on the right. As for the front 3 only Mount made a strong case imo. After that who best to unlock spurs? Werner and Havertz as a false 9?

You are right that the problem with kante and kova are both have tendency to chase rather than sit. But the 45 minute against arsenal got nothing about kante and kova. Arsenal pushed ther two fb high, our two winger aka werner and puli decided defending is not their job. Watch the game back and you will see bellerin and Tierney having acre of space. The first goal happened because Werner didn't chase the switch ball from right to left, hence james was isolated close to the box with Tierney. That has been our story against better team, attacker think they are hazard and defending is not their job.
February 1, 20215 yr Great that he's found a system that looks good so far with possession counting for something. The real test is how he handles when it's found out. That's when it usually goes downhill. Let's hope this time is different.

I feel as though we have quite a few options within the wingback system to keep it fresh and operating to a high level even more so then when Conte adopted the system. Reece can cover RCB and RWB, Chilwell and Alonso can alternate on the left and not to forget Zouma for the CB role. Even in the forward areas we have players who prefer a more central role (Werner, Mount, Ziyech, Tammy & Giroud) and therefore Tuchel playing CHO and Alonso to offer the width allows our forward players the ability to operate in more Central areas. We are essentially playing 3-2-5 when in attack which hopefully should help in breaking down a low block however the question marks will rise against good counter attacking teams who will benefit from spaces in the channels, Burnley exploited that space early but didn't have the quality to make the most of it.

The thing is Burnley's plan was to soak pressure and hit us on the counter which they did in the first half. They lacked a good midfield to exploit the spaces. When the first goal came, it was because we countered them at just the right moment. Dyche being the negative manager that he is chose to sit in their own half rather than attack us. I credit the win to the way we play but we always win against Burnley nowadays and they didn't attack as much. I am reserving expectations to when we actually beat a team higher than us on the table.
