Referee was a clown. There was never a foul on Di Maria leading up to the penalty decision. Other times it was like he’s never seen a tackle in his life. Then he was booking players for complaining about his stupid decisions!

Just pleased we saw it through. Would’ve been a travesty if we’d lost after being made to wait several hours because of a passing cloud. What is it with the Yanks? They never seen a dark sky before? Bizarre.

Thought we started really well and maybe should’ve been ahead at half time. Lacked a cutting edge though and that’s why we probably won’t win this tournament unless Palmer finds his scoring boots again. He looks really out of sorts.

I'm happy with the result, but I must admit we need to address Gusto. I don't blame him for the penalty, but he has been making too many bad passes and has been very poor overall. Josh Achampeong is much better already

It's simple, stop the inverted full back nonsense or drop him. Personally, I am sick of our full backs being asked to go into midfield, start attacks, then go further upfield and expect to play defense splitting passes. You wouldn't ask a RW to play CB, so stop asking a RB to play CM / CAM.

Tourney prize money in millions of 💷 earned so far 46 mill pounds for showing up
3 for 2 wins
5.5 for getting out of group
9.5 for getting to qtrs

46 million pounds PRIZE MONEY WON ALREADY

Get to semis + 15 mill more
Get to Final 22 mill more
Win Final another 29 mill

🏆 = 112 million 💷
“Loads a money”

To hell with next season 😅

Gusto played as a traditional fullback plenty of times under Maresca and has been just as sh*t. Brighton away was one of the worst defensive performances I’ve ever seen from a player.

I said even last season Gusto is a bang average footballer. This notion he was some attacking fullback just isn’t true. His saving grace under Poch was that he could actually defend. Bloke literally has no good qualities anymore.

Personally, I’d loan him.

Gusto has barely ever played as a traditional fullback under Maresca. The vast majority of his game time he has spent playing as an inverted fullback. Maresca has really f**ked up the development of some of these players. He even had Palmer on the left wing today. The guy is forcing these players into positions they are uncomfortable with, which is only resulting in them looking worse on the pitch. Even if you put them back into their original position now, it would take a long time for them to regain that confidence and natural feel for that position.

Gusto has been playing like sh*t for a while and it happens. His game is full of bad decision and even heavy touches these days. Afraid tactics alone can't fix that--gotta play James or Josh until his form recovers. If he never recovers his form, well, then he needs to go. It happens with young players, so it's not super surprising to see Gusto's form atm.

Bummer to miss Caicedo for the Palmeiras match, but if we need him to beat Palmeiras (also missing important players), then we have work to do.

Is this sarcasm? If it isn't then we were watching a different game.

From not having a shot all game they nearly scored three times near the end, we kept passing the ball to them.. They were desperate for the game to carry on

Just woke up after what seems to be an infinitely long game of waiting and a bit of sh*t football.

I'm glad we won this but that was insufferable

Chilwell, Stirling, Disasi, Nkunku, now Gusto, arguably Badiashile too........Maresca has a habit of freezing out players or making them play roles that don't suit them. Then we wonder why limited but productive contributing players are no longer productive or contributing......

It's the same/similar situation at Man Utd

Amorim (like Maresca), is a good manager, he is. But he's the wrong choice for that squad in that time period.

Maresca really loves the inverted wing and full backs, wingers that hug the touchline, playmaking 10s (think Palmer not Nkunku) and defenders that can play out under pressure. Anyone who doesn't fit that structure inevitably underperforms or is 'bomb squaded" (Chilwell, Stirling, Disasi, Nkunku, Gusto, Badiashile, Chalobah eventually).

Amorim likes structured movement and players that carry the ball to create, in a 3-4-3 type shape. Whereas the Man Utd he took over was a combination of (sometimes very) transitional and static-ish (less mobile) playmakers (Manoo, Bruno Fernandes).

Want an example of transitioning right? Liverpool. Replaced Klopp with Arne Slot who played a similar (but not identical) way, in a mostly similar shape, that suited the styles of the players already there. It also helps that Slot (unlike these "theocratic" coaches) adapts his tactics to the players available rather than trying to fit the players to the tactic.

I bet Maresca would do really well at Man City, as that squad is full of players that play the way he likes. And Amorim would do great at a club with more ball carriers, lessor egos and younger (more maleable) talent.

But both are the wrong choices for their respective clubs in their adopted form.

I just woke up, having fallen asleep during the weather break. What the hell happened!?

I gave up at midnight so can’t help other than to say at 4-30am I got up for a wee ( I am that age now) and glance at my phone and saw it finished 4-1 aet

Trouble was I struggled to get back to sleep. Was dead to the world when the dog started to woof ant tell me he was needing a wee likewise

The only conciliation I can take in this is that another wedge hit the bank

I should add just finished reading the DM article on the game and it helped but the funniest bits were the readers comments particularly the comments about the two pundits on DZAN , well one of the pundits and it wasn’t Mikel.

To be fair she was terrible well maybe not even that good !

Well I didn't see that coming LOL.

Pathetic penalty decision. Well done Colwill for telling the referee what he thought of it,

Besides all the extra goals, I can't believe I missed the only 2 minutes that Aaron Anselmino will probably ever play for us LOL. Congrats to him on his debut !

Caicedo banned for the QF - who will get the nod ? I think he will drop Enzo back alongside Lavia, and we'll have Andrey Santos and Essugo both sat on the bench thinking "I can do better than that" ... LOL

You think Maresca had any choice who went into the bomb squad? Behave, that was decided by the SD’s. Maresca is the lap dog that rolls over for his tummy to be rubbed every time he lies to the media. He bombed Chalobah saying he can’t play his style only for him to come back from loan and be the most capable. Maresca is either completely useless at recognising a players abilities or a w**k yes man. I think it might be a bit of both.

First game I’ve watched and packed up before the end since QPR away Easter way back in early 80s, we were 5 down near the end I recall

Made it back to the pub in Fulham before everyone else 🤪
