Barcelona have been given the green light for the financial year by selling their TV rights.

They still need to earn/sell 150m worth of assets (players) before they can register their new signings. This is all before they can actually make new signings.

Bloody hell, does anyone actually want to come here?

It seems all the players we've been linked to 'prefer' other clubs.

Maybe we're not the attraction we think we are?

It's every Brazilian's dream to play for Madrid and Barcelona, those two have the best image in Brazil through media and journalists. Especially for Raphinha who came late to the rich man's table, was not a wonder kid at all and took the bumpy route to success. Now when there is even the slight interest from one of those two Spanish clubs, of course we will wait until the last second to get his chance to play for them.

Yes. And beyond possibly selling De Jong to united they haven't got many other players that cthey are willing to sell, and could raise decent funds. Dembele is now out of contract for example/

Well I'm sure we used to be. And it's not just those two, even bloody Spurs look a better bet than us now.

Look at the players we signed when Roman first came here. We'll never attract that quality now.

The EPL is widely regarded as the best league in the world, so why wouldn't the best players want to play in the best league?

I just don't get it, and if Raphinha or anyone else prefers some other club to us, then they can f**k off there as far as I'm concerned.

I'd rather we sign no-one if they don't really want to be here, and we just stick with our youngsters.

A lot of this is based on rumours though. I doubt anybody on here really knows what Raphinha wants. It may well be Deco (his agent) trying to maximize the salary deal for his client. If Raphinha joins us he strikes me as the type of player who will give 100% for the club he plays for. Doesn't mean Barca won't try to prise him away in future, but hopefully we could make them pay heavily in such a case.

If he wanted to join us he would be joining us. Deal with Leeda agreed a few days back.

Perhaps but how much of this is also his agent?

I doubt Deco would be poorly paid for his client to come here, better than Barca would pay I would guess given their troubles.

It was reported a while back Raphinha did not want to join us due to TT tactics.

Wages. If Todd wants to streamline the salary range and is clearly trying to get the high earners off the bopoks, then maybe this is the stumbling block

Could be. He may not have had a chance to speak with TT directly. Sounds like Deco has taken the time to meet with all interested clubs.

I love this boehly way of trades . . . Well yes, I love the potential for trades. Because we have players to trade. BUT it is yet to happen.  Trades seldom happen outside of media talk. It would suit us. Especially now. There is a very interesting rumour circulating.  It is a long shot.  And it goes likes this. . .

Sergej Milinković-Savić.  [27].  Looking for a new challenge. Apparently.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (CM/AM) Lazio had no intention of selling unless the player pushed for a move, but the reality of having 10 players out of contract in the summer means they are facing the reality of selling two out of three key players including Milinkovic-Savic to help fund the changes they wish to make and to free up wages. It would take a huge offer of perhaps €70M to complete a sale. At that price most of the interested parties would want to include players in any deal if possible. Inter are effectively priced out of any move with other transfers they are making. Real Madrid's interest has moved on but circumstances are rapidly changing in Madrid and they could look again. PSG may make an offer after failing to sign midfield targets in recent windows. Manchester United remain very keen - and he is the preferred choice by some at that club but not all. Lazio are interested in three Chelsea players and it may be possible some sort of deal could be found including Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Chelsea would be offering Kepa, Loftus-Cheek and Emerson in exchange for Sergej Milinković-Savić and that would be a very nice deal.

It is a totally different market and game to 2003. Barcelona were a shambles, having staked almost their entire future on Ronaldinho being a success. Real Madrid were in Galacticos mode having signed Beckham, with nary an interest in the football side of things. Bayern and the Bundesliga were considered a second-tier league. Domestically, Man U and Arsenal had little reason to fear their dominance would end anytime soon. Serie A was beginning its terminal decline.

Man City and PSG can now outspend us, and Real Madrid, Liverpool, Juventus and Atletico Madrid directly compete with us for the same targets.  Bayern is a consistent Champions League force again, and Man U and AC Milan are commercial sleeping giants.

The EPL is also not as commercially and culturally dominant as it once was (separately: this is a fact that I think Boehly and his hedge fund have gravely miscalculated on and we will pay for it in 5-6 years time). La Liga always has been the primary league for anyone of Central or South American descent and now they have the commercial power to back it up and compete with the EPL's buying power.

Trades don't work in football because both players have to agree to the move. They work in American sports because player consent is not required, meaning that clubs can trade assets to 'lower' clubs for beneficial deals. Trades are also necessary to work around the salary cap (eg when NBA clubs take on a 'poison pill' contract). The legal framework is completely different in football and therefore the transfer system is different.

As for Milinkovic-Savic, he is a talented player who would struggle to beat Jorginho in a foot race, so it's a hard pass for me.

His first buys weren't massive names Duff, Joe Cole, Glen Johnson, bloody Veron and doubt many people had heard of Mutu at the time.

You clearly don't remember when Roman first came here then fella.

We weren't signing the beat players in the world from the off, the first season we were signing the likes of Damien Duff, Glen Johnston, Geremi, Smertin, Cole. The biggest one was Maka

We still couldn't sign guys over the likes of United (Rooney).

The only thing that's changed is now more clubs have the financial clout and we are not top tier in that bracket now.

Barca and Real have publicity and clout for Brazilians.  Reality is Barca can't afford to make the signing unless the De Jong money comes through in time

I would say the first big grab we had over the established clubs was Robben, or maybe Essien. Up until then we were signing second level players that the giant clubs werent really fighting for, as you say.

Well, It is all about Barca.  Raphina wants to go there, they cannot afford him, until they sell De Jong, they would rather buy the Polish bloke Lews and keep Dembele. IF they do sign Raphina then we should get Dembele.

Kounde meanwhile wants Barcelona, but they are not going to be able to buy him.

This is why it was always bollocks when they said we were ruining football. We didn't exactly go and hoover up all of the best players in world football, we just put ourselves into a position where we could compete with the best.

Absolute scenes if every single signing falls through.

Raphinha - Wants Barcelona only.

Sterling - Change of heart given the delay in securing the deal.

De Ligt - Priced out/personal terms not agreed

Ake - City don't want to sell

Kounde - Player wants Barcelona only.

Maxwell Cornet for £17.5m is the latest.

Could be a very astute signing covering left back, wing back, and thr front 3 positions.

Clausse in for the right side, Cornet for the left, combined fee under £30m would be good buisness.

I would be quite happy with that. Whoever pulls on the Chelsea shirt I want to see 110% commitment out of them and believe we will from Broja, Gallagher, Colwill, Chalobah etc.
