The Frank Lampard goal scoring record thread

Featured Replies

These types of discussions always benefit from some criteria being layed down. It's important to make the distinction between the shooting, passing, crossing excellence of Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney and Beckham, with the ball retention skills (short interplay and touch under pressure) possessed most notably by Xavi and Iniesta. This country (and culture) has always been quite good at producing the former, but rarely as consistent at producing the latter. And the midfield for the last 10-12 years has been based around that group of players above with the weaknesses often exacerbated through the 4-4-2 approach of Capello and Hodgson. Hence why the likes of Algeria in 2010, Germany in 2010, Ukraine in 2012 (twice) have ran rings around them.

Problems arise when you don't have a reasonable balance between the two elements, either manifesting as a Mexico - all tippy-tappy and no bite - or as an England - all bluster and no fluidity.

Joe Cole was the chosen one! It was said that he would destroy the Sith Spanish, not join them Liverpool, you were supposed to bring balance to the force midfield.

Frank will definitely score into double figures, he still plays at the highest level with total commitment and class. He will be instrumental in our fifth title win. Super Frank!

1 Alan Shearer 260

2 Andrew Cole 187

3 Thierry Henry 175

4 Frank Lampard 166

5 Robbie Fowler 162

6 Wayne Rooney 156

Don't know if Franks's last goal is in there. From wiki...

Shearer was a lethal striker, hard and a bit dirty but a great finisher. What we would give for a 25 year old Shearer, just give us the title now.

Think Shearer was the definition of Complete Forward. Let's bear in mind that Lampard is a Midfielder. Surpassing these top names (and robbie fowler) are not just a testament to his goal scoring ability but his fitness and professionalism.

Still criminally underrated. How Gerrard is deemed better is beyond me.

Because he looks amazing in a team full of mainly average players and had 1 amazing match back in 2005.

He played a lot more games than Henry, but on pure talent and ability I don't think Shearer is as good as Henry

It's like comparing Van Nistelrooy and Henry, it all depends on what you value more. Henry was effective while still being flashy, but Shearer was more efficient, played with worse players around him and carried the team.

If he played for United instead of Newcastle it would have been more of a contest.

I still rate Batistuta higher, but it's very close.

That absolute bomb he scored on Sunday was #167. 8 away from tying Onnnreee

Looking at the list, the closest midfielders to his Prem goal tally are Giggs and Scholes who are 19th and 20th on the list.

Indeed, he's far and away the highest scoring midfielder there.

Going further down Hasselbaink, Drogba, Cole, Duff and Eidur are a few former Chelsea players amongst the names, and even Terry has 32!

Lampard will get 100 caps and he will break the record. My god folks, haven't you learned anything over the years?

It's been a long time since anyone blew my trumpet, so I hope you don't mind if I blow my own.

Which reminds me of the old joke, "Don't knock masturbation .. It's sex with someone I love."
