It does make me laugh that some people have a problem with a nickname. But I guess it reflects the hyper-sensitive, politcally-correct times we live-in where it seems everything is taken oh so seriously and everyone gets offended about everything. What next? Objections to calling him Nando as it may be construed as comparing him to a poor quality world-wide restaurant group?

Mr Torres. It is then.

And perhaps we shouldn't make fun of his bad performances? After all he is doing his best. It's the taking part not the winning. Sport should be about inclusion not exclusion and we should encourage all to participate, even those that aren't very good like Mr Torres.

Cant everyone be winners like they do in school? Shouldn't everyone get a trophy at the end of the season?

Oh what a wonderful idea!

We've had people stamping their feet, refusing to accept that hitting the woodwork could possibly have the slightest element of bad luck about it. I'm pretty sure the way these computer games work is that everything ultimately comes down to pre-programmed physics, Hit the ball at angle X, using Y part of the foot with Z amount of force and XYZ happens.

But then even these games have a random element built in. This random element is designed to simulate the "luck" which some of you insist doesn't exist. But don't mind me. You go on believing that football is an exact science, and that there's no such thing as "luck."

And now... if you don't find what has to be said is a cringeworthy attempt at creating a nickmame, even that's seen as defence of Torres. You don't think Floppes is genius? Why you must be one of those Torres fanboys.

Bullsh*t. "Floppes" sounds like something even a Sun headline writer editor would reject. The Sun did I say? Ok maybe not. It's about their level.

Can I do better? I can hardly do worse. Ok, how about: El Floppo You don't think El Floppo is funny? Fair enough. I doubt it's even original, it's just the first thing that came into my mind. But compared with "Floppes" it's positively sublime.

No-one is offended at the nickname, I think people are offended at how terrible and unfunny it is.

No people were saying we shouldn't be spending time and effort in making up names to criticize our own players with, funny or not.

I think everyone has given Torres a great deal of support since he's been here. And there are a lot worse things people could be calling him than a very light hearted Floppes. I was trying to lighten the mood a bit and have a little joke earlier but if were going to have a sensible discussion regarding him then lets.

I have defended him at times during games for unfair criticism, i take each player on a game to game basis. If they do well i'll say so, if they have a bad game i'll say so and lets be fair we all have off days. My first post after the other night was along the lines off a bit unlucky but again not good enough.

The thing is at this stage of the season your looking at the end of year report. This is when we don't look at games individually but at the season as a whole and vote for player of the season etc.

Yes he has scored 19 goals, but he has played many games and he's been anonymous in most of them. Alot of those goals have come against poor opposition or the last goal in a rout.

His distinct lake of effort or interest at times is borderline criminal for a man earning what he does, and can have a really bad impact in the dressing room morale wise.

Now he could score us a goal to win us the Uefa Cup and play a blinder and there will be many praising the second coming of Torres and how he must stay but they will be going back to judging him on a single moment or a single game and they will be wrong to want him to stay next year IMHO. For me 19 goals and all, Fernando's end of year report still reads a big fat F.

What does everyone else think??

If he really appreciates the way the fan's stuck by him for 2 years while his form sabotaged our chances of winning anything that Drogba didn't take on, he will be co-operative in getting a transfer in the summer and not sit here and refuse to leave for a wage-cut.

If he pulls a Bogarde or Malouda then the fans have real cause to get on his back.

If he wants to stay then fine, end of day he has won his only ever domestic trophies with us and we are probably the last club he would have the chance of winning anything else with as well.

BUT!

If he is here next season I think he needs to accept that he won't be first choice and would be behind (hopefully) a new signing and Ba.

Another one who cannot grasp an extremely simple concept. Please go back and read what I wrote on the subject. Obviously luck exists but it doesn't mean everything is either lucky or unlucky. There was no luck involved in that Torres shot. It was his fault that he missed. Likewise if it had gone in it would have been entirely down to him - I wouldn't have called it lucky.

According to how a number of you see the attempt, rather than being unlucky that it just missed, you could argue that he was lucky to get it that close, seeing as he isn't the one in control of the situation.

This is the last post I will make on the subject of that shot specifically. Its a simple concept that shouldn't take this long to understand.

I don't really think the fact that a few people find the term 'floppes'  to be sh*t banter a reflection of the 'hyper-sensitive, politically-correct times we live in'.

Let's try not to lose sight of what we are discussing here.

As others have rightly said- nobody finds it offensive, vulgar or insulting it is simply, in my opinion, about as sh*t as a nick name can get and sounds like it is something that could have come straight from a first school playground created by a bloody 5 year old. That is all.

The fact that there are middle aged men slapping each other on the back over it's creation and defending the nickname to the hilt as if it is a piece of absolute comic genius is what I find to be amusing and more than a little bit cringrworthy if I am honest. And let's not be mistaken- It could be Torres, Mikel, Turnbull or any other Chelsea player to be honest and my opinion would be the same.

Oh I can grasp the concept alright.

The concept you fail to grasp is that it's a matter of opinion. Your opinion was that Torres hitting the woodwork had nothing to do with bad luck, others disagree. Throughout this discussion you have stuck to the attitude that anyone who disagrees with you simply fails to understand. That only those who agree with you are capable of grasping this concept of yours.

Well get this, it's not a matter of "truth" or of "fact" or of failing to grasp a concept, wihether simple or otherwise. It's a matter of opinion, and your opinion on this matter is no more and no less valid than those who disagree with you.

You have your opinion and you're entitled to it. What you don't have is the right to dismiss out of hand the opinion of those with whom you disagree.

Its not an opinion. It is a theory that is either proved or disproved. No one has come close to disproving it yet. The best argument against it so far is '9 times out of 10 it goes in' (or something not too dissimilar), which really isn't an argument.

i like torres but some of the nicknames are funny, not sure why but El Floppo made me laugh quite a bit.

I dont like him his haircuts offend me as does his bank balance and his inability to talk with a pure bred Cockney accent.

Do you think he gives a f**k though? i very much doubt it.

BUT El Floppo is funny as fook to the point that i want to waste 50+ English pounds and have it put on the back of a shirt.

You do realise that humour is subjective right?

I think I know where you are coming from though as I have met this opinion many, many times over the years following Chelsea. You are one of those who believes we should never, ever criticize our own players and should always standby them whatever. Laughing at them is a complete no-no.

I call it an opinion; you call it a theory.

I call that pretentious. In my opinion.
