A howler from Courtois tonight.

If Cech had made that mistake people on here would be going off their heads about it.

See that's the thing, some of the people that are saying Courtois should be number 1 don't actually see him every week. I admit i don't see him every week myself but Cech is doing fine and shouldn't be dropped.

He has only made 3 mistakes that have cost him, one today, other v Espanyol and I forget the other one. That's a pretty good record for someone his age.

Yeah if he is not here next year as #1 - Barca and Real will make their move. Jose knows him well from their time in La Liga so I guess he will be the one making the decision.

Difficult choice

Cech is still in a good age as a GK and we couldn't really find a better servant and representitive for the club. Courtois is best in La Liga and young. The only fact here is we can't have both. If Cech was 36 he'd probably be okay helping out Courtois and playing second fiddle....anyway it is a positive problem I guess for Chelsea fans anyway. Not sure how the two players think about this situation.

  • 5 weeks later...

Other than the odd game or two I haven't seen a lot of Courtois but, for him to receive the plaudits he does he really must be a fair talent.

Petr is still a top class keeper and with a decent transfer value so possibly it really is time to bite the bullet.

FFP is something that we cant ignore just like we really have to accept that its highly unlikely that we will have both keepers in our squad at the same time.

There is a wider debate that we need to have in terms of letting players go to help balance the books and lets face it if the club does adopt that type of approach we may well see a significant growth in transfer fees received

I love the accusation, that people who would like to keep chec (the best keeper in the world). Are thinking with there hearts not the head... I would counter that those that are so sure courtiuse is already the better option are thinking with football manager and paper ... They play in very different leagues... Chec has been doing it for ,any seasons and we have seen many pretenders to the crown, heart and chezny to name two... Chec is breaking all the records and eats be honest for the most part he's archived it in a good team but still a team that has only won 3 titles.. Compare him to untied keepers who should really have better stats and it tells me all I need to know... I'm not saying courtois isn't the second best in the world... I'm just saying he's not the best

Actually I think we can completely ignore FFP. UEFA are fearmongering on Bayern's behalf and other clubs like PSG are basically calling UEFA's bluff.

Yeah well I'm ready for a new goalkeeper. Cech isn't going to improve.

So sell the better keeper cause the worse one might improve. Good logic.

You claim you haven't seen him but still think its time to sell? Weird.

Show some loyalty some of you lot.Petr for me until he loses his reflexes.Dont fix what aint broken.Courtois will have to be patient or become the better keeper,HE ISNT YET IMO.

The only way we can really judge who's the better keeper without them both being at the same club or at least the same league. I think next year we'll bring Courtois back and have them have some form of fight to the death to see who comes out on top. I have a feeling that Courtois is better or at least very close, but it's impossible to tell due to the different challenges they each face.

Great problem to have of course.

So sell the better keeper cause the worse one might improve. Good logic.

Actually I didn't say I hadn't seen him more that I had only seen him on one or two occasions!

The thrust of my post was that others who have seen him and indeed those far more qualified that us agree that he is the real deal.

Petr is not going to improve that surely is a fact. Succession planning isn't disloyal its critical for continued success.

My view is that its not just about the here and now more that we have to apply our thinking wider and that may include taking risks and one of those maybe to sale certain players on.

People talking about loyalty are delusional, it's nothing to do with loyalty one keeper is 20 odd and already one of the best in the world, the other is the wrong side of 30, deteriorating as a player (Although still World Class) Cech isn't the same as he was a few years ago. As much as I love him and believe he was as much of a hero in the Champions League run as Didier, if we had to choose, we have to look to the future with Courtois IMO.

I was in complete shock at the actual result until I remembered a simmeler poll last season regarding who should be are number one striker from lukaku/Torres/ Sturridge... Torres won by a land slide... and I got a sh*t load of abuse for claiming sturridge was the better option.

How many of the 65 people the voted for courtois have seen him play more then 15 games or so... I'd hazard a pretty good guess that most of those will be basing there judgments on paper talk and here say...

I personally have seen Courtois play a handfull of times for both Madrid and Belgium and what I have seen reminds me very much of Paul Robinson in his time at Leeds before he ate all the pies and drank all the ale... namely great reflexes and shot stopping ability but a tendency to palm back in the path of the striker. I also haven't seen any where near enough to know how he commands the box.

See the shot stopping/ one on one saves, that's the easy bit, it's the flashy stuff the will make match of the day and highlight shows and you tube complications, that has us all proclaiming some one the best keeper in the world. It's why so many 15 minute fans seemed to rate Reina so highly.... but he was never as good as chec, because what you don't see is the amount of corners and crosses and free kicks high in the box that Chec claims compared to nearly any other keeper playing today. He makes it look easy, it's not! The best two keepers I have seen in the prem before Chec. For some reason this went out of fashion in late 90's and keepers just stopped doing it but it makes a huge difference to the deffence.

We'll keep Terry, Lampard and Cole playing until they can barely run then shall we?

I think it's an easy choice. Bring back courtois next season and have him playing cup games and the odd league game to get him some experience in this country with a view to being our number 1 the following season. We all love cech but courtois is the future and by the end of next season I have no doubts courtois will be the better keeper

Except this isn't football manager mate, Courtois is probably in the top 3 goalkeepers in the world, why would he want to waste a season on the bench at Chelsea when he could walk into Real Madrid or Barcelona's starting line-up?

Courtois is known to command to his box well. You don't win keeper of the season ahead of Lopez, Valdes, etc on saves alone.
