December 18, 201312 yr With good reason, he doesn't have the run of games Willian has had. In regards to Schurrle, the comment below yours says all I was going to say. Willian plays it safe, Schurrle tries to make things happen. I think I commented on those passes and said it was good bits of play and something he should be doing more of. If he did that regularly I wouldn't be mentioning his end product so much. I was also talking about him generally, not just in regards to last night. I don't recall Schurrle or KDB creating any clear cut chances, they did put some good balls into the box that could have resulted in goals though. They also made space for themselves, ran at/beat players and took shots. KDB's being unlucky not to result in a goal. They generally contributed more to the attack than Willian did (I have no idea what he was doing in the second half, he watched the attacking play go past him for long periods in that half). KDB hasn't had the run of games Willian has, granted, but when given games he has hardly done anything to show he would contribute more than Willian as you suggest. Not really sure about second part of yoru post as in one sentence you are saying that Willian 'plays it safe' and in the next breath conceding that you don't recall Schurrle and KDB creating any clear cut chances despire them presumably not 'playing it safe'. Willian created two clear cut chances, probably the best two of the game I can remember in fact. You say Schurrle tries to make things happen and I would agree and whilst this is good the execution is the key point and at the moment it is not good enough for me and often results in him losing possesion, you make reference to them taking shots but how many of those were on target, if any at all? Willian took a shot on Saturday against Palace from outside the box that hit the post and resulted in a tap in for Torres so not really sure what your point is on that one and Willian has shown he can create space and take shots to good effect. His goal against Norwich wasn't bad either. I personally don't think there is much to seperate Schurrle and Willian in an attackinh sense as I said previously but would lean towards Willian for his overall game. KDB has hardly played and not set the world alight when he has so not sure what you are basing it on when you imply he delivers more than Willian. Edited December 18, 201312 yr by mclovin83
December 18, 201312 yr As for KDB, I never think you see the true player when they only get the odd chance, they try too hard, or try things they wouldn't normally. Think of drogs or Lampard even, they would have been ditched after a few games, the real player only shows after many games. But sometimes they are just sh*t, no way of knowing really.

I fully agree with that to be fair. You have to take the chances when they are provided though. Willian and Shurrle have to fight for their places as well and have been in and out of the team, personally I think Willian has played his way into the team through his contribution and is now getting more regular oppertunities, hope he starts against Arsenal personally.

Something we dont get to see also is the player in training, day in day out. Managers can see a lot more from these sessions than we ever will in a match.

KDB has hardly played and not set the world alight when he has so not sure what you are basing it on when you imply he delivers more than Willian. Willian didn't show anything special in his debut apart from that lovely goal but got better after he got more games under his belt. KDB's debut was much the same, he got the assist with resulted in a goal and didn't play any worse than anyone else on the pitch. I guess KDB just drew the short straw but it hardly makes sense to me that people have written him off. I think KDB will contribute more in the final third based on KDB having create the same amount of good chances (ones that would be scored if we had better strikers) that Willian has in the same game (as in when he comes on as a sub/starts in a game Willian plays) despite getting less mins with yesterday being the only exception. Not a foolproof theory by any means but I can only go off what I've seen. I don't think anyone can accuse Schurrle of playing it safe, KDB did so in the first half but improved in the second and tried to make things happen. It wasn't until towards the end of the game that Willian started to make things happen. You're right, it was the two best chances. I just wish he did it more often and when we were on top. I think 2 of KDB's shots were on target, I know 1 one of them definitely was because it forced it good save from their keeper. 1 of Schurrle's was on target as well. They both had 3 shots each if I recall correctly, so 2 out of 6 isn't bad. It's better than passing it around and going nowhere with it. The shots on target could very well have fallen to the feet of Eto'o after the keeper saved it. My point is that he is often in the best position to take on players and get shots off but doesn't for whatever reason. He had one shot last night and it was a pretty bad one. The fact that he's scored a good goal at Norwich and that his shot at Palace resulted in a goal should give him more confidence to try his luck. If we could merge Willian and Schurrle we wouldn't be having this conversation cause ultimately what I think Willian lacks is confidence in the final third. He's improving and it will take time seeing as he's new to the club, league, etc but at this moment in time I would fancy Schurrle ahead of him purely because he gives our attack some purpose. I would gladly have him lose the ball on occasions if it meant some direct attacking play, heck Hazard losses the ball and no one complains because you know it's only a matter of time till he gets the best of the opponent's defence. December 18, 201312 yr By the end of the season Willian will be challenging Hazard as the star of the team, and everyone will have forgotten about Mata. The kid has Mourinho player stamped on the back of his neck.
December 20, 201312 yr Agree wiv last post, willian improving with games and against sunderland he was best player and worked very hard all game. Expect him to be more prominent from here on in KDB on the other hand has been really disappointing , he must have the assetts but he isn't showing em at all - maybe confidence? or motivation ? but he made no real impact from a impact role in the team - a dunno what we gonna do with him honestly.
December 21, 201312 yr Random post I know but saw today that this time last year The Guardian rates Willian one of the best 100 players in the world I think they rated him in the top 30. Funny what plying your trade in the premier league can do to your reputation isn't it.

KDB needed something like 10 games in a row for Bremen before he really started to perform, he's not going to show much in 3/4 games spaced out between months. I feel like this is something the club would have been aware off and should have known he was never going to be afforded the same luxury here. I can only assume Jose underestimated how hard it would be to integrate him into the team.
March 8, 201412 yr Not hugely relevant but does anyone follow Willian on instagram? He's shaved his afro off!
March 8, 201412 yr Bloody hell - is that for real? I probably won't recognise him! Edited March 8, 201412 yr by Beerqueen

March 8, 201412 yr Did Luiz not do something similar a year or so ago and his hair was just the same?
March 8, 201412 yr HIs pace and determination was amazing today. He even showed up with some amazing through balls and passes. Given that he snubbed Spuds to come to us, I think he'll be another cult hero at the Bridge
