February 28, 201511 yr Thought Jezz said there would be scheduling conflicts? Think we all realize the bidding process was a joke at this point though. There would be issues with the AFL (Australian Football League) and NRL (National Rugby League) as their leagues commence in late March/early April and ends in late September/early October with June and July being the peak period for both competitions. It would be a severe disruption for those two leagues and many people I know who aren't into football (soccer) were very pleased to see Australia lose the bid but even as an avid follower of the AFL I would be happy to shorten the season or change the format for one year for the sake of the World Cup being in Australia. The biggest issue confronting Australia is how to appease these league bodies. If these league bodies can be appeased and well-compensated I can't see why Australia couldn't host a successful World Cup if given the right to do so. That's why it's mind-boggling that someone like Qatar with a questionable human rights record, very hot weather conditions in June and July and cultural norms that contradict most of Europe and the wider Western world were given the rights in the first place. Corruption surely must have taken place behind closed doors within FIFA or else it's the most absurd decision I've seen from this pathetic footballing body.
March 1, 201511 yr Soldier, There are really only a handful of nations that I wouldn't want hosting the WC (Qatar being one), but I really think it should stay in Asia/Oceania this time around. It's been held in Europe/Americas so often in recent history. Jezz, thanks for the clarification. It would be much easier to compensate two leagues than every league that competes in Oct-Jan.

I don't think there would be a major issue with the opposing sporting codes IF Australia did happen to land the WC. From memory the AFL and NRL were all for the bid as there was a clear understanding what it would mean for the nation including the growth of the game if a WC was hosted. Blatter knows it's a big mistake holding a WC in Qatar due to a number of reasons pointed out already but I think Australia is an ideal candidate in future. Stadiums are not an issue and certainly not the weather The game has devolped like crazy in the last 3-4 years.
March 7, 201511 yr It's been over four years since Qatar won the bid for 2022 and while the AFL and NFL understood the need for compromise if the World Cup had been given to Australia I think these leagues would have been compensated but there wasn't extensive talks about compensating these leagues at the time of the bid however. Maybe we would have seen this happened had Australia received these rights hence I don't believe the AFL and NFL would have been too disappointed to see the bid for Australia fail miserably. Unfortunately it's too late now and the 2022 World Cup will just symbolise the corruption and ineptness that FIFA has become. The fact that it's being strongly advocated that the World Cup will be played in November and December will ruin the 2022-2023 season and we shouldn't forget the effects it will have on 2021-2022 and 2023-2024 seasons as well! There has been nothing but extensive problems and questions since Qatar got the World Cup. I don't think this would have happened in Australia or anywhere else for that matter especially if the World Cup was held in Europe, Asia/Oceania, South America and North America in 2022. I can't help but laugh because I'm no longer angry about it.
March 8, 201511 yr Australia Australia Australia Should have won the bid to begin with Of course it should have been Australia. A big sports fanbase? Check. Lots of suitable stadia? Check. A track record of hosting major sporting events? Check. The infrastructure to handle large numbers of visitors? Check. Suitable climate? Check. Nah, let's give it to a Middle East despotism with no football pedigree to speak and a pretty dodgy record on gay rights, women's rights, employment rights, well, human rights in general. Oh, and the small matter of 100 degree summers as well.
March 8, 201511 yr I thought England had a good shot too. They just didn't play the bribery game well enough.
March 11, 201511 yr Thacker, the summer in many parts of India can also be quite something! That said, the venues can be smartly decided. The infrastructure is still a long way off that in Europe. Nothing like an impending World Cup to fix that though. I think we'll be ready for 2026/2030.
March 12, 201511 yr I thought England had a good shot too. They just didn't play the bribery game well enough. You would think so. Plenty of stadia (in London alone, all you have to do is close your eyes and point, and you have a stadium), great travel infrastructure (three international airports in London alone, with more in Manchester, Liverpool, and Newcastle, as well as regional ones in Norwich and Blackpool, British Rail, and Eurostar Rail), and England is absolutely mad about football. They also held a little something called the Olympics in 2012. Shoe-in, really.
March 16, 201511 yr Blatter has said that Qatar must do more for Migrant workers. People have been saying this for months. Doesn't Blatter read the news or does he just choose to ignore it? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31896137 World Cup 2022: Qatar needs to do more for workers - Sepp Blatter Fifa president Sepp Blatter says 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar must do more to improve conditions for migrant workers. The treatment of construction workers in the Middle Eastern state has been criticised by human rights organisation Amnesty International. Blatter noted that some human rights groups reported "progress" had been made, but said "more must be done". Fifa is expected to ratify a decision to move the tournament from summer to winter at a meeting on 19 and 20 March. The head of world football's governing body was speaking after meeting Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha to discuss the country's efforts to improve conditions for workers building the stadiums and other projects for the tournament. More than 180 migrant workers died in Qatar in 2013, and in May 2014 the government pledged to reform the restrictive kafala system of sponsorship - in which employers effectively own labourers and control their freedom to leave the country - and promised to implement proposed changes "as quickly as possible". The promised reforms are yet to materialise, but Blatter said: "It is encouraging to hear the Emir's personal commitment to workers' welfare and to get a sense of the improvements planned for all workers in Qatar. "It is clear that Qatar takes its responsibility as host seriously and sees the Fifa World Cup as a catalyst for positive social change."

Do they treat migrant workers well in Qatar? see previous two answers. Etc. Etc.

March 17, 201511 yr I know it's a while away, but I'm seriously considering not watching the Qatar World Cup. If people boycott it, and it turns into a logistical, heat-stroke filled, unmitigated disaster...then those Cheques can only go so far
March 20, 201511 yr The 2022/23 season is going to be proper sh*t. How can you interrupt a full season for months? This is possibly the worst thing to happen to football in my lifetime.
March 20, 201511 yr World Cup: Clubs to receive £142m for releasing players. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31984954
March 21, 201511 yr Part of the Qatar bid was their ability to have stadiums that would have cutting edge cooling technology to cool the stadiums during the torrid summer months. What happened to that? I guess FIFA did not realize that it gets extremely hot in Qatar in the summer... Right. Disappointing, frustrating, but not surprising.
September 25, 201510 yr Confirmed it will start Nov. 21st and last 28 days. What a joke. How will the CL plan around this? Games pushed back to January? Edited September 25, 201510 yr by TheChelseaBlues
September 26, 201510 yr Confirmed it will start Nov. 21st and last 28 days. What a joke. How will the CL plan around this? Games pushed back to January? Talk about f**king the whole season up or actually ruining three seasons as well as this will affect the 2021-2022 season as well as the 2023-2024 season. I'm almost tempted to not watch it out of principle.
September 26, 201510 yr You wont have to Id bet. I dont see it having a good chance of actually being played there. Laying aside the workers and unfinished stadium problems theres a chance with this scandal going on the decision gets overturned. It will be a PR and attendence disaster if they go ahead with holding the WC there. How many people are going to the desert just before holiday season, to a country with no booze and severely conservative laws to watch overpriced football matches? My money is on it being played in Australia or the states.
September 26, 201510 yr Hope Blatter lives long enough to be watching the 2022 WC from his prison cell.

They don't care what happens, as long as they get their "Middle East" WC. They got their bribes and their yachts nothing else matters.
