Thibaut Courtois

Featured Replies

I doubt Courtois or Hazard will sign new deals unless we offer them crazy money. You can certainly make a case for offering Hazard a significantly improved deal. Not so sure we should do the same for Courtois at this point. If he is willing to sign an extension under reasonable terms then fair enough.

The more that I look at the first goal, the more I get frustrated.  It was a super-acute angle that had no business of going in, with anyone at the near post being able to stop it very easily.  That means any defender, and not just any keeper.   How he let that goal in I will never know.  Letting in the second and third goals was not nearly as bad as letting in the first goal, but the damage was done to the team by that error on Tibo's part so early in the contest.   It like he switched off and thought there is no way Messi would shoot at this crazy angle with his right foot.

That Sanchez save was glorious. Top quality stuff. He also saved the Lacazette shot shortly after.

He also saved us from being embarrassed by a ten man Lescister just back in January with two good saves against Vardy and a very good one against Ndidi.

That's just from what I remember, there's most likely more if I went back and looked. In fact I'm willing to bet there is seeing as he's only conceded two more goals than De Gea in the league, with De Gea having played an extra game.

I think people are more upset about his comments and suggestions about wanting to go to Spain than anything because his performances haven't been anywhere near as bad as people are making out and the stats pretty much reflect that.

Put Smalling and Jones infront of Thibault and I bet the number of goals he concedes sky rockets.  Put Azpiliqueta and Christensen/Rudiger in front of DDG and I suspect he concedes much less.

Want to see him gone in the summer. The guy just isn't very good, and last night he cost us massively. He's bad mouthed the club on numerous occasions and his ego is unreal considering he's average at best. f**k him off and use the money to get a proper goalkeeper in, someone like Oblak. The only problem will be getting somebody to buy him after that calamity last night - He genuinely thinks Real Madrid will be interested :laugh2: Good luck with that mate.

All a bit knee-jerk IMHO.  OK bad game and not a fantastic season.  Would still rate him a 7/10 -as is solid most of the times, does all the bread and butter stuff well, doesn't give you palpitations and is still young for a goalie.  So as long as is committed to the cause.

Would be great if we get/make/find a decent striker though...

Prior to Christensen getting regular starts in our defence plenty where complaining about how bad how it was, how Dave was the only reliable player and how Cahill should be dropped.

On the other hand the likes of Jones and Smalling were actually playing well for the first half of the season for United and when you combine that with Jose's defensive style of football that United fans have been complaining about then I'm struggling to buy into this theory of yours.

Bit knee jerk in here for me. It's one bad game.

Same thing used to happen on this board with Cech. One mistake and it's all never been the same after the head injury,  need a new keeper etc.

Good player who had an off night.

Courtois is in my opinion consistly average, but when he's needed to raise to the occasion he can't do it, when was the last time did he do a match winning save that one us points? I can only remember Sunderland away last season right at the death. I can remember at least 3 finals Cech raised his level and won us trophies, pen save at 0-0 v Pompey final 2010, Liverpool final 2012, Andy Carroll save at 2-1 when they were starting to batter us, and of course Munich. Can any of us really remember Courtois do that in a run of the mill game, let alone a big game or Final?

Courtois is nowhere near Petr Cech’s level.

I’d like to see us get rid of him and sign a new goalkeeper. I know it’s not a great season and not many players are playing well, but Courtois has never been that good. For a team of our calibre we should be aiming higher than Courtois.

I know I wouldn’t want Courtois in goal next time we are in a big European game.

Cech of 04-06 and 10-11 fair enough, the Cech of between those periods and after the latter however was very hit and miss, i remember Andy Gray in 2009 did a half hour analysis trying to work out what the hell has gone wrong with him.

During which this forum had endless carry on about how he wasn't good enough anymore. Same thing happened in Carlo's second year.

But think about Cech in big games, has he ever let us down?

I certainly don’t remember any massive rookie goalkeeping from Cech, and we’ve already seen a few by Courtois and he’s only been here for a few years.

Liverpool in the CL 2009 he had a stinker, i know we went through but his flapping about made it more nervy than it should have been. He was responsible for a few of goals we conceded late on in the Avram season which led to us losing the title. I don't blame him, im just pointing out it wasn't a decade of garden and roses with Cech either.

Courtois was indefensible last night, but he has been very good for us, and the phrase we don't know what weve got until it's gone will apply here in my opinion.

Using 'expected goals' (xG), it has been worked out how many goals Courtois should have conceded in Premier League matches this season, and when compared with the actual total goals conceded you find out whether a keeper is over - or underperforming.

1. David de Gea (Manchester United) has conceded 13.56 goals fewer than expected

2. Ederson (Manchester City) has conceded 0.41 goals fewer than expected

3. Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur) has conceded 1.73 goals more than expected

4. Loris Karius (Liverpool) has conceded 1.88 goals more than expected

5. Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea) has conceded 2.11 goals more than expected

6. Petr Cech (Arsenal) has conceded 3.30 goals more than expected - click the right arrow to see the other 'big six' Premier League keepers ranked

Wouldn’t be suprised if he was allowed to stay in Spain to go see his kids to be honest. Might do him some good.

He is getting absolutely destroyed on instagram. Half of them are Chelsea fans telling him to f**k off, and the other half are barca and rival fans laughing at him.
