Problem is apart from Athletico, no team will pay you massively for him. So you have got only one choice but with Oblak having improve his game massively, I can't see Athletico Madrid coming for Courtois.

We got so lucky with Courtois coming along when he did. Finding a truly elite GK is a very hard task and replacing a legendary GK like Cech could have alsio been ridiculously hard. 

 

He's probably in the top 3 GKs in the world right now and is still only 25

I'd have a hard time putting him in the top 3 BPL GKs at the moment.....sorry, I just quoted you randomly I actualy came here to post that I'm surprised this guy's thread is hidden so deep.

I can't help but feel very underwhelmed with Thibault, especially compared to the hype surrounding him coming in.  I'm not saying he has been poor, but he has been far from top class in my books.  That he didn't save any of the last 5 goals really reinforces this for me. At least 4 of these goals were all within reach of where he was standing, yet all went in.  Were they easy saves? No, but you would expect a top class (ie, top 5 in the world or even top 10) GK to make some of those saves.....  I struggle to think of any game where we got points because of Thibault's performance (remember, Cech was typically good for bringing in points in the double digits just based on some of his performances, keeping us in games we didn't deserve to be in). 

 

I've felt this way for a while now and I know I'm not alone, but what really has me here positing was seeing DeGea vs Liverpool and making some top class saves...you know, the saves where you go "Wow, how did they do that?".....and I think back to CFC goalies doing the same, and it's Petr who goes to mind and not Thibault...but I figured maybe this was fond memories clouding my opinion, a sort of inverse recency bias......

 

But then we saw vs Roma and vs Watford, and again 5 goals go in that quite frankly were all save-able by a top class goalie, yet not one saved. 

 

I think the defence provided in front of him is a huge part of "his" success.  Ya, he won the golden gloves but he only had to make about two saves a game.....he also lets in a goal for about every two saves he makes.  It's not an issue with our defence for the most part, but I feel we have a goalie that will rarely if ever pull our bacon from the fire when we need it.  My confidence in our net not bulging when our defense is beaten is pretty much nil these days

 

I don't know if I'm being unduly harsh, I'm not saying he is rubbish, but I feel very underwhelmed over Thibault and think he has been far from one of the best in the world (or even league) for quite a while now. 

Im sure i could find small sample example's of De Gea letting in shots he could maybe have done better with in a certain timeframe, and possibly at the same time Courtois makes a few 'worldy' save's. For example who can forget when DDG conceded a corner goal vs Bournemouth or f**ked up for United in a semi final or for Spain in the Euro's? Well United fans and the media block it out, but i certainly haven't.

I rate Cech highr than Tbo so far but both are quality. Tbo isn't as good as Cech or DDG as a shot stopper but is very imposing inside the box. He made a worldly save vs Xhaka if I remember correctly when we played Arsenal at Wembley. Can't remember if it was the community shield or FA cup final but that save was insane.

The 5 Roma and Watford goals showed me some other Chelsea problems, Barry Bridges.

made a great 1 on 1 save with Naingollan v Roma from what i remember. He's certainly better than Cech in his last few years at the club when he had a tendency to stand and watch shots fly into the goal without an effort to save them. 

out of the 5 goals he conceded in the last 2 games, only Watford 1st I think you could argue he could've done better, although he would've seen that very late. 

kolarov's took a massive deflection and flew past him. 

Dzeko's 1st was world class, his 2nd was a header inside the 6 yard box, if he had saved it, it would've been down to luck more than ability at that range. 

Watford second he had no chance. It was a effectively a free shot at goal closer than a penalty! 

There are much bigger problems in the build up to each goal. 

He may not make as many spectacular saves as de gea, but who does?

I don't really agree with the imposing part, and its my main issue with him. He is a superb keeper and pulls off some stunning saves, but he just doesn't seem to come out and dominate his area the way Cech always did. It confuses me because he's got the size and clearly has the ability, but so often he seems to sit back near his line letting defenders try to clear balls he could have made his own. If a cross comes in further out than the six yard box, nine times out of ten I'm expecting him to not come out, and that's really odd for a 6'6 keeper.
