Petr Cech to Arsenal

Featured Replies

What's the consensus here do people think Cech makes Arsenal into title contenders?

If they get the players they are said to be in talks with like Vidal then yes they very much will be.

They are a stronger side than last season and they were not very far away at all, adding Cech like JT says get's you 10-12 points a season.

They are always considered contenders due to always finishing in the top four, Cech's not a miracle worker though....We could have held on to him for an other year and got nothing for him, so we got 11 million instead.

Cech is not a slave, we couldn't compel him to go to a less "threatening" club, all we could realistically do was to  hang on to him another year, so we've cashed in.

As I said before on this thread this won't particularly please City or ManU either.

I wish him good luck in his personal life, but utter failure in his professional career. Mourinho is not an idiot he knows he was going to lose him this season or the next, he obviously sees Courtois as the future and that's that...

Arsenal are a commanding centre back and a commanding midfielder away from challenging. Maybe they need a commanding striker too!

Who cares, we are the champs.

My take on all this is that Cech has basically flipped the bird at Chelsea, the fans, Mou and everything associated with Chelsea. And as such anyone that feels the need to flip one back at him is well within their rights. No doubt he is too good to be on a club's bench, no doubt he deserves to be able to go to where he wants, no doubt he won it all with us playing a very big part and that's why I always doubted he would actually go to Arsenal. At the end of the day he maybe considers it a job like most footballers would but you can't have had such a huge role in Chelsea and not understand what leaving to Arsenal would mean. They will maybe call us classy for doing this but really its classy fools. It's just not done, except when its a hostile purchase. Cech made it as friendly as it could be for Arsenal. Some say last year within contract and £11m I agree, others say no other clubs bid seriously I agree as well but what we must realise is that all this happened because Cech had basically let them know he would join them. They knew it was the move he wanted and didn't need to bid any higher, other clubs didn't bother chase because they would have already been told about Cech's choice when they would have enquired about him. I'm all for respecting players and their choices but also believe respect is reciprocal. I respect Lampard but not his choice to go to Man City and whilst i appreciate him for all he did with us in my opinion he is just another footballer with a rival club. The classy response some of us gave him on his return contributed to Cech's move 'cause he would have thought at some point how will this go down with the Chelsea faithful and remember,  "Lamps didn't get a bad reception like"". I'm not saying burn a shirt, i'm not saying troll the guy on the internet, i'm not saying abuse him with hate and vitriol, all i'm saying is don't let them think its ok to just flip the bird at us and expect a hero's welcome when they're back or even acceptance of their actions when they go. Loyalty isn't much in football these days and for those that no me well know i'm one that always supports players choices to leave a club and actively criticise fans for how far they take their sentiments/emotions. Mourinho loves Lampard let's not get it twisted, he was always happy to talk about him when he was with us and even after he got released until he moved to Man City. Because he was disappointed in the Man's choice. Let's not kid ourselves. Lampard had been on mega wages a week for a long time, should we not be questioning his refusal to go on lower wages and sign rather than leave us so he could go somewhere else they were prepared to pay him those mega wage? Jose brought back a 36 year old important part of our winning history and do you really think he wouldn't have wanted Lamps to stay as well. They just couldn't justify paying him what he had been getting when it was obvious he was on the decline. Yet after his dodgy move we applaud the "hero". why wouldn't Cech leave if an Englishman could leave to hook up with a rival.  It's alright for you to say let's be classy about this one, it won't make them not call you classless when they describe you. After over 10 years with us if Cech doesn't understand that it would be a slap in the face to join Arsenal, then good riddance but certainly not to bad rubbish. Great keeper, but not so much a great man as some are trying to paint him.

I have to be honest and say Petr deserves to stay in the best league in the world, deserves to stay in the house he and his family have come to think of as home and deserves to play at a team who are realistically in with a shout in all competitions.

I don't begrudge Arsenal having a great keeper who spent his peak years with us as they are the only choice he could have made with the proviso's listed above.

I do hope they come up short as usual when it comes to the businsess end of the season but feel we have certainly strengthened them in an area they have been weak in for a while, they have a decet squad and I think they will be a force if they can bring in one or two more

in key areas, I'm hoping the great signing they just made opens the door for a couple of bad ones but I am quite satisfied that our boys can improve on last seasons form ( looking at certain players who slipped below their huge potential) and again come out on top.

I really will have a dilemma with Petr in goal for them as they are a team I usualy like to see lose, I get almost as much pleasure from it as I do us winning...not sure I can dislike them so much with big Pete in their team.

^^^ sobbing uncontrollably.

Cech is a Chelsea legend and I wish him, not his new club, all the best.

Not much moving around for his family; same city and back playing again. Unfortunately, Arsenal were his best option available.

I don't really hate Arsenal, never have, so his going there means nothing to me. Carlo went to Spurs, nobody cried over that.

As long as Wenger is in charge we've little to fear from them, simple as that.

I think they might get a little closer but I still think it will be us or City for the title.

unfortunately i think they will be right up there. Having cech makes them significantly better, but doesnt weaken us. we have stayed still while they have progressed with this signing.

I am truly concerned that we havent been linked with more players. its obviously early days but i said before the transfer window opened that i didnt think we would be signing a multitude of stellar world beaters and that the likelihood is anyone who joins us will be for squad depth only.

im a bit worried about it to be fair.

Concerned we haven't been linked with more players? Weve been lnked with bloody hundreds.

what was cech's first interview as an arsenal player like?

did they ask him silly questions like "hows it feel to be at the biggest club in the country?" like the dippers did when joe cole joined them?

Big Pete what a hero would of retired with us if courtois hadnt turned out so awesome but i feel safe in the fact the best he will do for the gooners is get them possibly second place behind us :)

a shame that once again coverage of this deal has been focussed on a minority of morons who have sent death threats to cech, called him a snake etc. they are not, and do not represent, actual Chelsea fans

He will have Mertspacker in front of him than JT, won't be easy for him to earn those 12-15 points a season for Arsenal. I'm over this now. Of course he's a legend for the club, and it will take a very long time for another GK to break his clean sheet record. He wanted to stay in England so bad that he would sign up for our main rival,  that says a lot about how CFC meant to him. If we did get 11M for him, it's not a bad price for a 33 year old GK. In my humble view, they signed a great player just passed his prime and will only go downhill. He won't be winning title with Arsenal next season, in a few months  he will adjust his expectation to a top 3 finish, just like Wenger

I'm gutted that Petr has joined Arsenal but I don't begrudge him! There's no point holding grudges unless a player has systematically undermined the club and deliberately been provocative because he was unhappy at the club for whatever reason.

Petr has provided more than a decade of great memories. He was superb from the moment he walked through our doors and I truly believe his best years were in 2004-2006 before he sustained that serious head injury against Reading in October 2006, but nevertheless he was fantastic after his recovery and he didn't decline at all.

I regard his performance in the 2012 Champions League Final as one of the best you'll ever see. He saved a penalty against Robben in extra time and during the penalty shootouts he went the right way on all occasions. He's one of the biggest reasons why Chelsea were champions that year and he brought so much happiness and joy to the club.

Its sad his career at Chelsea is over but with Courtois' emergence and upside it's understandable he wanted to move on in the end but I'm still struggling to accept he's an Arsenal player now. All the best to Petr who's always been a classy gentleman but hopefully he's a failure at Arsenal now!
