Tammy Abraham

Featured Replies

The weirdest tall striker I've ever seen.  All tall strikers have one thing in common and that's their ability to score headers.

Tammy doesn't have that in his locker for some reason.

Probably his worst game of the season today. I said in the match thread that he is to us what Jesus is to City. A decent player, but not somebody that is good enough to start every game and win you titles.

I don't think he should be starting every game ahead of Giroud either. In a game like today, against a packed defence, it's not a game I would have preferred Abraham in. Giroud is a much better option for this type of game and I am struggling to understand why Lampard played Abraham ahead of him. It's not just today either, already this season we are seeing Giroud on the fringes and Abraham playing pretty much every game ahead of him. I'm not really seeing anything to suggest that Abraham is a better footballer than Giroud right now, so I don't understand why Giroud isn't at least sharing the role with Abraham.

I am not sure Giroud would have been a better option with their low block. Agreed he missed some chances, but his movement is way superior than Giroud and he had their defenders worried all game long. You can’t also underestimate how much he adds to our press.

I wish I could drag out the old ‘he’s got good feet for a big lad’ cliche but he just helps to reinforce the stereotype.

Our best chance happened because of Tammy so we should look at the big picture, he missed those half chances from the crosses and didn't do well but you could see that he really tried hard.

I hope to see Werner in the middle but Tammy has been doing well in the air, also in the last 5 games he has 2 goals and 1 assist which isn't that bad.

He's a pretty average striker who has tools missing ie. poor aerial and hold up ability, his X factor is striker positioning and being able to put them away, often when there is only a couple chances in the match. But when he has an off day in being clinical like today, he's almost completely useless, Lamps had to see that and make the sub much earlier on.

Tammy is a good squad player, but I believe we become alot more dangerous with the timing of Werner, Pulisic and Havertz meeting those great crosses from Ziyech, Chilwell and James.

For me today it was a little bizarre that Giroud was not brought on at half time as in the 50-52mins two superb crosses came in from James, feel Giroud would have scored one of them.

I agree with an earlier point that Abraham presses better for 90 mins yet surely Giroud needs to be on the pitch at 70mins if we are struggling instead of Tammy.

It's frustrating, we have a 6'4 striker yet he's not winning anything in the air. His best asset seems to be his movement and finishing, yet I'd argue Werner is better than him in both areas, so as soon as Pullisic is ready we should have either Werner or Giroud ahead of Tammy in the pecking order. Like others, I reckon Giroud should have came on much earlier, and probably would have won the game for us.

It isn't that he isn't winning anything as he managed to get in front of the CB on 3 occasions in the game, meaning he did the hard bit of manoeuvring himself into a goal scoring position but he seems to struggle in completing the move with a finish.

I've seen numerous training videos of his finishing and he comes across as a natural finisher but it doesn't seem to translate into the matches.

Somehow he can win more than half of the duels in the air but can't really connect with a cross and it's very obvious that both James and Chiwell know how to put up a great ball in the box...

He has to improve no doubt. Given we have Giroud the game time between the two should be far more level than it is.

Longer we can keep Giroud happy more Tammy can learn from him.

Does that include headers in our own box? Because he seems to be able to head those out reliably.

I'm guessing it includes all of them?

Could be a case of stat padding then, how many other teams put their striker in their own box instead of near the half way line when defending a corner?

Also winning a duel in stats means touching the ball ahead of the defender, it doesn't take into account that it matters if the out ball doesn't go to a team mate, or a cross doesn't hit the target.
You can just watch the game and see if Tammy is good in the air or not.

It most likely is stat-padding although Tammy's defensive contribution should not be underestimated given how physically short our defence (bar Zouma) is. One of Abraham or Havertz is absolutely essential at the near-post role on corners.

I know the comparison is off by a mile but just look at the runs and headers by Cavani. That is quality. Tammy's footwork is impressive at times but a tall guy like he is should go to school to learn heading. He has one of the best tutors in Giroud. I feels if Oli started we would have won the game.

A 15 PL goal scorer still needs to learn the game? Why not continue improving by getting more game time which he is currently doing.

This mythical idea that Giroud is somehow near world class needs to stop, for one he isn’t mobile enough.

Quote where Giroud was described as world class please.

Giroud is a better all round player than Tammy. Had he played, we’d have won.

I completely agree, Giroud is 34 and leaving at the end of the season. So if he's unhappy about game time i don't really care, Abraham is Chelsea future i rather he plays and gets better than him sitting on the bench and being unhappy.

Absolutely. He needs to keep improving in every area. If you haven't heard Salah story you should. In a nutshell: When he was with us he was raw and missed aspects of his game. He went to Roma and his manager told him you need to improve your finishing. Salah took it to heart and went on to buying a goal in his house and started training shooting every night to improve. His finishing improved dramatically. You can ask a couple of Liverpool fans are they glad he did...

If Oli was at the end of one of those chances Reece created in the game we would have scored. Tammy's effort is admirable but he doesn't even know how to position himself to a cross.

1 of those 3 chances has to be taken. He seems to need a few chances to score something we are good at thank god

cant help thinking timo would be far deadlier in his natural position with pulisic/ CHO on the left

but hey what do I know

Jimmy was talking in the post match whether Tammy watches himself after games, trying to correct his mistakes and I was wondering the same, too. Half of any striker's success comes from timing and movement. It's great to have speed but if that was all there's to it, guys like Giroud would never get anywhere. Tammy probably has physical attributes to be a top forward but he lacks intelligence. People talk about his pressing and it's good, but his reading of the game and anticipation need serious work. He runs when he needs to stop and stops when he needs to move. That's where all those misplaced passess and crosses come from. That's why he can't make a proper connection to at least force the keeper into a save, because too often he's not where he's supposed to be.

His heading is poor from a technical standpoint. Strikers see an attacking cross coming, they time their jump in anticipation and position themselves to connect with the ball cleanly to direct it on goal. He made a mess of every cross vs Spuds, that was painful to watch.
