Guus Hiddink - New (old) Chelsea-manager

Featured Replies

^ I agree with all of that in theory, I really do...... the reality is that we don't really back our Managers, in fact, we do the complete opposite time and time again.

I think after this season I am just in a bit of a mood really and just can't become enthused about any Managerial appointment because I just know, deep down, what the outcome will be, sooner rather than later.

I really thought Jose was "the man".... in fact, more than that, I thought he was our man and I had sort of put all my eggs in that basket as I think most fans had in terms of us finding a long term manager.

I like Goose, I rate him enough to think he could give us a few years of stability with the chance of some silverware thrown in and I guess in our fragile state of rehabilitation I think that is enough to get the gig for now.

Whoever comes in I will get positive about when it happens but for now I really just struggle to take it seriously when thinking about anyone coming in for the long haul.

Absolutely agree with your post too. My post has big caveats about us actually backing the coach and I don't know if we will in any meaningful way. We need something of a culture change at the club and a reorganisation of certain things, but if they're not going to do it after this season then they never will and we'll be stuck in an endless cycle.

I won't get my hopes up of Guus staying regardless if he wins every game for the rest of the season..... he essentially did the first time and through it all 100% insisted he was leaving and did so in the summer. Was hugely gutted. I think he just takes this role more as a favour to Roman than any desire to manage at this level anymore.

Hiddink is just about the most boring and predictable manager when comes to making a sub. Was it 10 minutes to go, 5:1 up when he put on Matic for Mikel? Seriously, does he fear the come back from City kids at that stage?

No but perhaps he wants to keep Matic happy by giving him 10 min on the pitch. Who knows? I'm sure there was reason for that.

Sunday supplement talk about how we should keep guus on after our improvement under him and the lovely calm that he brings to the club.

Be singing a different tune I am sure if psg knock us out, and it will get worse still if everton follow suit.

Just watched his press conference on Chels TV. The man's a fcuking breath of fresh air. Non confrontational, answers are straight to the point, no us against them sh*t. Would love him to stay. He has turned us around in a very short time,. Yes he plays it safe, but last time he was with us he won the FA Cup and would probably have won the Champions League but for an obscene refereeing performance in the Barca semi. We could do a lot worse than Guus. Anyway, Conte will do for me!

I do understand the 'calm' thing that some fans might appreciate after Jose's more bombastic style, but we have to look to the future and Guus isn't that.

I'm not a great believer that we've looked that much better to be honest. I think there's a lot less expectation and he's just about meeting that, but I've not seen anything to suggest that he's the best we can do.

I think in his previous stint here, he could just let the players go and do their thing, much like Robbie did in 2012 and the error we made then was sticking with the interim. If we do that again it's a wasted season.

why do people always point at our club in regards to a "long term" manager? how many years do most managers stay at a club for these days? 3 at most i would say. all i hear is people in the media talk about how we aren't capable of long term, but we are not the only club ffs. it is just the way of football these days is it not?

I think most people mean 'permanent manager' as opposed to 'interim'.

Yep, it's something i pointed out a few months ago. Even Barcelona have gone through their fair share of managers in recent years. Either managers don't want to stay long term or they get sacked, it's just how it goes these days.

The days of Wenger and Purple nose are long gone.

Around 3 years seems to be the lifespan of a manager at the top level these days for various reasons.

With ones like Pep it’s because they want a change and challenge in another country while others like Jose is because they have underperformed in the current season so the club takes action.

I don’t think many of us bought into the 10 year plan or whatever long term timescale when Jose came in, I myself hoped it could be true but in the current £ driven business of football it’s not realistic especially if results are poor and top flight European football is at risk.

If it is Conte I’m expecting a couple years of management then another change regardless of our fortunes as it’s just how it is now.

Looking at the way clubs are getting setup now, they seem to be adopting the American sport model for management. The role of the "Manager" is changing to a role of head coach. He is in charge of the playing system, team selection, player interaction and coaching. Over him, he has a technical director (in US based sport leagues this type of role is usually called a "General Manager") who takes care of bringing players in and interactions with the rest of the teams and the owners.

The GM will be in charge of the multiple managerial facets of the team, while the Coach is only in charge of the product on the field. Usually the coaches are replaced in a three year interval or if there is a complete failure in the workings of the team, while the GM will usually stay with a team for a much longer period of time. It's a system that offers more continuity and the failures of a coach don't undermine the whole team (the failures of a GM might though).

i see guus is in geneva for a yokohama event. while he was there, he was picking up chicks.

giving his number to a hottie. no woman can resist the guusmeister.

He should be next James Bond!

Hi all,

I'm a dutch Chelsea fan and created an account just to post this.

Honestly i cannot see why you would want a different manager. In the Netherlands, Guus Hiddink is seen as the best of the best. The cream of the crop. The pick of the litter. The Don Corleone of football trainers and a tactical genius. Famous for knowing the strengths, but mainly the weaknessess of his AND the oppositions squad. Not only is he a great people person and knows how to trigger key players but he is also among the most intelligent men out there. Combining this with his impressive resumé and his quick turnaround of the current Chelsea squad makes me wonder why most of you say he needs to go during the summer. Is it because he is too old? Not flashy enough? Not a clown like van Gaal?

Sorry for being a little biased since i also support PSV Eindhoven, but i'd like to know your opinions on why he wouldn't suffice in the long term.

I think the board would not mind giving him an extension, but the man himself is often saying that he does not want to stay at a club for a long period of time. This was also the case during his last stint. Even when he was a bit younger, he wanted to remain involved with International football, because he wanted to step away from the strain of being involved in a club on a daily basis.

Cannot wait for him to leave tbh. Awful subs turns victorys into defeats

Cant stand him

?

Our bench did not have much in terms of substitution and there was not much he could do. It also does not help when Willian, Oscar and Matic cannot make a proper pass and lose possession or make careless pass. Also it does not help when RLC Could not be bothered with defending despite the fact that he is trying to get into the starting rotation. The Stoke goal was a long time coming in the second half and we simply did not defend properly against a team whose form of attack is being direct and physical. This team does not have the mental fortitude needed to close out games. We go on a winning spree or we take the lead and we immediately tend to loosen up and lose possession. This sh*t needs to stop.
