Jose Mourinho thread

Jose favourite to replace Van Gaal within the next few days.

I am excited - I think he would be perfect for us and build a legacy like Fergie did.  He has always dreamed of managing Man Utd according to people close to him.

We'll probably end up with Giggs though - that will be depressing.

Yeah, good luck with that one.

Davey - having problems quoting but a top post. One thing I definitely agree on is how the players react when a manager leaves. You could almost physically see the shackles coming off some of our players because they wouldn't get a private/public dressing down if they didn't track back once or tried a flick or two.

So his first game managing you is against us at old trafford. That would be a twist of fate.

Still do not like the sacking one bit. However you read a post like Davey's and is hard to find cause to disagree.

Oscar was trying flicks on the halfway line, playing with joy in his heart, and people wonder why he played well.

I look forward to Hazard's rabona returning.

Yes you want the team to come first and you don't want any Flash Harrys but a little bit of individual expression never hurt anybody, IMO.

By the way Gem, just hit the quote button, easy peasy !

i think van gaal will get jettisoned after the stoke game, mourinho in before the chelsea game but he will watch it from the stands while giggs takes over.

im sceptical as to whether jose actually has what it takes anymore. he hasnt evolved and his methods are seeming increasingly dated / draconian to an extent. i obviously love him for what he has done for CFC, but as davey pointed out, his second spell was a shadow of his first and for me he seemed jaded, weathered, tired and predictable.

that said, with limitless funds at united, and free reign to sign whoever he wants, whenever he wants, he could find himself happy, or content, for the first time in his career. equally, however, he is only ever one botched transfer away from throwing a tantrum, and with that utter fuckwit ed woodward in charge, it wouldnt surprise me to see some of his targets being missed and jose throwing his toys out the pram.

i remain convinced that a lot of the issues this year stemmed from our inability to attract, or buy, the players that jose wanted. stood on the pitch celebrating the league back in may, he said he needed fresh blood. he was then quoted in the press saying he needed to add competition. he was further quoted saying that he handed his managerial report to the board at the end of the season - we all know what happened in the summer and the abomination of a transfer window, coupled with cech leaving against his wishes. it was toxic, jose clearly felt undermined, and the unnecessary sideshow of the fearn/eva situation only served to exacerbate an already prickly situation and atmosphere.

at least this time we can move on, thank jose for the memories, and not pine for "what could have been". its not in his make-up to build a legacy. he has rooted out several young, hungry players and potential talents, and left us with an ageing squad which looks devoid of hunger. Admittedly, the "ageing squad" comment could be taken as somewhat unfair, but its how i see it. we have sold / marginalised some promising young talent which has been utilised to its potential elsewhere; could nathan ake not have done a job for us this season? playing well for watford and absolutely not looking out of place in the premier league. would bamford not be better to have in the squad than falcao, given that his loan thus far has been pointless? we could have adopted a policy of utilising him in league / fa cup matches... better he learns the ins and outs of first team football with chelsea than on the bench at palace. The kdb / lukaku one... easy to look back and say those were errors, but the simple fact of the matter is that they were errors.

trophies, short term success, yes. long term solution? not for me. United will find this out too, and with their history of bringing through young players and playing with flair, i cant see him lasting long at old trafford.

edit: be interesting to see how jose handles the popular juan mata should he take over at OT. that could be an instant schism in the dressing room.

I can't quote either, it works on my phone but not on a PC, most annoying.

Quotes works on Google Chrome for me but never on Internet Explorer for some reason.

I therefore tend to use IE when reading Davey's posts as I know there is usually nothing worth quoting.

Only joking DB, you know it.

While it is fair to criticise Mourinho for past five months, I disagree with daveys assessment that his second spell was inferior to the first...for me, the first two years back were superior.

Why? Seems to me people have quickly forgotten how he came back to a club no longer writing blank cheques for players and with the old guard a fading force...he rebuilt the side and I'd argue his title triumph last season, where we broke the record for most days leading the pl, was the best of the lot...not the best team, the 04-5 one was that, but best achievement...

Also getting cfc to cl semis with a strikeforce of Eto'o, Torres and ba, one of the worst in Europe, shouldn't be underestimated either and could have won the title his first season too...

let's not use benefit of hindsight to dismiss his achievements and record second time around...nor absolve players and the board of any responsibility for the farce that has been the past few months

Let's not forget that during the first half of last season we played incredible attacking football under Jose. He may be considered a defensive coach but some of the football we've seen from our players during that period was such a joy to watch. The Schurrle goal against Burnley and Fabregas' against palace showcased what we were capable of producing as a team. The second half of the season was all about maintaining our position in the league, and that's understandable.

Everything seemed positive. Whatever went on this season... I'll never know.

God ! I'd completely expunged E'to from my memory.

Update

just searched for ways in which to use "expunged" in a sentence, and google came up with this one

"Thus 3300 defenders were able to repulse and even to "expunge from the battlefield" the whole of the Sevastopol column, except that portion of it which drifted away to its left and joined Pavlov."

This word changes everything.

EDIT: Freudian slip when typing "expunged" into google, and typed "exspunked". NSFW results. Advanced warning.

Hope you've got some good youth team players... we could pick them up cheaply as you'll no longer need them

As for the dynasty, it just won't happen. He will breeze in get some silverware but then look for an exit strategy. Not at all sure either how he would take to living further North long term.

He made way more mistakes, not least letting two world class youngsters leave, something that will cost us dear. PSG and Atletico, both times we needed a draw at home in the second leg, both times his tactics were all wrong, way too defensive, we can't blame bad luck this time. His mind games, his attempts to influence referees, failed miserably IMO and he was too easily rattled, his decision regarding pre-season, etc etc, I could go on and on, Falcao, what the hell is that all about? *

Once, I would have trusted him with my life. Not anymore.

Also, let's not forget, Fergie had gone, replaced by David Moyes, and neither he, Wenger, Pelligrini, or Brendan Rodgers are in Fergie's class.

Did people say all this about Jose in the summer? Did anyone moan about getting £46m for Lukaku and de bruyne at the time they were sold?

As for people questioning about Jose ever building a dynasty, the same could be said about the club...

Also, if you looked at his 04-7 reign, would be easy to pick out examples where he got tactics wrong then too...he was never without flaws, what manager is?

does it matter? he was the manager and those were his calls. we as fans have the right to be critical in hindsight as much as united fans can criticise ferguson for letting pogba slip.

to be fair whilst I rated lukaku more than most and thought that we should've done more to keep him, at the time I thought that effectively swapping him for costa (plus £4m) was very good business. and we did get a title out of it.

de bruyne did help fund the matic purchase at a time when we desperately needed central midfielders too. but since then we've seen schurrle, salah and cuadrado come and go. all jose signings and none of them nearly as good.
