No they don't, the best defenders concentrate all game and don't gift a chance. If Luiz is still giving chances away while defending at 30% a game then that's not really a good thing.

Off course I don't mean every single game, the difference is Luiz does it pretty often. Theres quite a few moments he has a lapse of concentration in games and sometimes he will get punished and other times he wont. People generally only notice if a goal is conceded though. Doesn't mean his a bad defender and like I said his having a good season, he will just never be a top defender in a back 4 IMO.

If he doesn’t sign a new deal, I think our best option is to slide Azpi in to central defense and bring in a new RB and Reece James

I'm actually enjoying Luiz a lot more this time around than I was during his first stint with us. He's still got those silly mistakes in him, but I am finding him a lot more enjoyable to watch and actually think he's a better player overall than he was back then. He's a big game player too, which every club looking to win trophies needs in their team.

But i don't think it can be as black and white as that. When these lapses have occurred, maybe the LB has been cr@p and he has been unnerved or has made mistakes trying to compensate. Perhaps the developing play has resulted in him getting pulled out of position. If he is in possession and shanks the ball to the opposition, or does what Obiang of West Ham did at the weekend then so be it, but i genuinely can't think of any of these situations. I think his media reputation precedes him, particularly with the scouse to$$ers like Carragher, and his busy hair does him no favours. It wouldn't suprise me if Dave has had just as many situations where he could have done better but it all goes under the radar.

As good as he is with the ball, a defender has to be able to defend first and foremost.

 

I blame the whack to the head he took in the opening five minutes.

Incidentally, everyone knows I have always said Luiz is not proper a defender, but I am also not convinced by Emerson yet either. Gets forward well but defensively looks a bit fragile at times. Early days for him though.

Both Emerson and Luiz were horrendous in that second half tonight. 

I knew it was a bad idea to praise him. His double mistake that led to the goal was Luiz at his worst and why he has this reputation as a mistake waiting to happen.

You certainly won't get an argument from me on that. But I would still like to see Luiz in the formation above for 3 reasons.

1. Takes him out of our back line.

2. Puts in him a position to play those long passes and to be further up the pitch.

3. He has Kante as a minder (cover) and Luiz, in theory, should also be better defensively than Jorginho.

It'll never happen I know but all the same, would like to see it tried.
