January 24, 20197 yr Badly at fault for the goal and was all over the shop for 10 minutes or so afterwards. But then calmed down and had the guts to take the winning pen. Fair play to him.

Fair play to him. Also played a barnstorming first half from the off. Won everything, opened up play, led the attack at one stage. I'm glad that Luiz is in our team.

Secured his legendary status with that CL penalty ... it was the state of the shoot out as much as the style of the penalty ... we're at the Bayern end, in their stadium, Mata had missed, Bayern scored ... another miss and we'd be in trouble. But no, he takes that long run up, smashes it high into the net and then saunters past the Bayern supporters with such an air of swagger and confidence that you could almost feel the belief draining out of them. " We are Chelsea and we WILL not lose ... " was his message. Nice for him to get the winning penalty last night. Knew he wouldn't miss :-)

January 25, 20197 yr Perfect microcosm of Luiz. Fired everyone up, then lost concentration for the goal and then smacked in the winning penalty.
January 25, 20197 yr No doubt offensively a very important player to us for his passing range and creative vision. The best passer of the ball in the squad bar none now that Fabregas has left. But if you took that away, would you want him in the starting XI based on his defensive ability? Edited January 26, 20197 yr by just

Well you wouldn't, the Spurs game shows that. We are not allowed to mention it though

I think he’s a better defender right now than both Cahill and Christensen so yes, I would.

That's pretty obvious and I don't think many would argue with that. Cahill is to old and Christensen is still largely an unknown quantity short of match practice. But without his passing range, and relying solely on his defensive abilities, I think most people would then be looking for a more consistent centre-half than David Luiz.

Remove the thing he’s really good at and then he isn’t as good? That’s like saying if you removed being able to dribble past opposition players then you’d look for a better winger than Hazard.

He still manages to give the opposition chances while defending 30% in games. Luiz has still put in some top performances this year though and has surprised me in a back 4.

Great offensive centre-half for his creative long range passing. Not that great at defending. Should he be a starter? Absolutely at the moment because the benefits of his creative vision and range of passing outweighs the cost of the defensive lapses. What I would add is that he is a player capable of wild extremes in his level of performance, the Citeh and Tottenham games are prime examples. Never really know which Luiz you are gonna see. Every defender gives some chances away, Luiz isn't prolific at it, and now we have the ball more our defence defends less, not rocket science, just maths.
