How is 4th best an achievement? No doubt Luiz plays well sometimes but for a centre back you look for consistency which you don't get with Luiz. Look at last night - we wouldn't have had to go to penalties had we not conceded that goal where he was ball watching like he is prone to. I don't mind him staying for 2 more years if he can cut down the number of errors he makes which cost us ultimately since I know it will always be part of his game.
May 10, 20197 yr He was at fault for the goal yesterday night, but what shows a mental strength of a player is the way they recover. He was top notch after that. He won so many aerial challenges, especially there long set pieces they kept launching into the box and also made that pivotal clearance at the end. The BT Sport pundits also recognized he was at fault for the goal but lead by example after that. I am not denying he is error prone but imo he has been key to our play this season. We have kept 15 clean sheets in the league. The third most in the league and that is quite impressive, considering some of those clean sheets were against big teams too. And yes, I think a lot of the clean sheets was pivotally because of Luiz. He had MOTM performances in many of them. He brings a bonus to our team that would only be appreciated once he leaves the club.
May 10, 20197 yr I'm surprised we broke our over 30 rule. But other than that, I like extending him. I think he can help Rudi, Zouma, and Christensen immensely as they all grow and become our main 3 CB's going forward (if all goes correctly). Yes he has moments of just frustrating lapses but his dedication and fight is never in question, and he is the best ball playing CB we have currently.
May 10, 20197 yr Gives us two years to find a younger defender who can ping the ball about and remain calm in possession.

May 10, 20197 yr I can only see this being a good decision if it makes us more money selling him on. If the ban is frozen and we bought a cb to play alongside Rudi, Christensen & Ampadu then why would we need Luiz? People are moaning the team is rubbish and the players are making mistake after mistake. The way to rectify that is to sell the players who can't learn after 12+ years playing professional football. If you can not learn after that length of time you are nowhere near a great player. Sell Luiz, Willian & Alonso for starters. Luiz seems a nice guy but let's not beat around the bush here. He is not the level of player we should be keeping around. That's my cynical opinion anyway.

You don’t need 4CBs though; one will be stuck in the stands and would never make it into the 18 man squad (bench is usually a CB & a full back).

And if they can be flexible on this policy, maybe they will be flexible in other areas too.

And certainly not on such a regular basis.
May 11, 20197 yr With Cahill leaving, Luiz is the last remaining link to our 2011/12 Champions League winning team. I can forgive a few mistakes every time I think back to his role in that match, and particularly THAT penalty ?

Good point about having that retention to the 2012 CL win in the squad, hopefully that inspires the CHOs and other young upcoming talent. Yes he does have a defensive lapse where in some circumstances he makes the wrong move and he does cost us the odd goal. This needs to be balanced with his importance to this team where he can be part of the build-up or launch a direct counter attack with is long range passing. He also offers Jorginho an outlet when the former is being pressed. He is normally reliable in penalty shootouts. Scores with the odd free kick or header. Not sure what effect he has on the squad though the board wanted him back for his soft skills in the dressing room.
May 11, 20197 yr Not really sure what to make of it. On the one hand I like the character Luiz brings to the team, but on the other hand, he makes far too many errors to be a top centre back. His taking balls are fantastic, but he can get into habit of going for them too much. I just hope theres plenty of rotation like at city, and maybe we will get the best out of him. I dont think centre back is a priority for us though, Rudiger is decent, I still have faith in Christiansen, and Zouma has had decent year. However I think if a De ligt, Koulibaly, Varane, or Skriniar, is available, I would take them in a heart beat.
May 11, 20197 yr I’m surprised by this, especially breaking their own rules and giving him a 2 year deal. Personally I would of been happy to replace him. There’s no doubt he’s been good for our club but he doesn’t defend properly and IMO goes for those Hollywood passes too much as they are difficult to execute and miss a lot of the time. He costs us a lot of goals through his lack of concentration and we would need a seriously good attack to outweigh our defensive mistakes. Phased out into a squad player could work but a regular starter for the next 2 years is risky IMO.
May 11, 20197 yr Transfer ban would of factored into this decision to keep him, and I'm happy enough to have him around for another 2 years. He's been a good servant to the club, and won pretty much everything. For the future though we definitely need a high class centre back to partner Rudiger.
May 11, 20197 yr Potentially can’t sign anyone in the summer, Cahill is leaving, Rudiger with a nasty knee injury and might not be match for the new season... Luiz was probably in the strongest position of any player since we bought in the over 30 rule to get more than a 12 month extension. Makes sense really but doesn’t stop us going out and signing a new CB if the ban is avoided this summer.

In view of the transfer ban, it was inevitable that some players get contract extensions. Even with the occasional brain fart, I like David Luiz.

He makes mistakes but he also has a lot of very good games too. We have kept 15 clean sheets in league, with him in that defensive duo for a large majority of them. Having a ball playing CB like him is a bonus. How many chances has he created with his long range passing. He is a key component to our team. The criticism he gets is way OTT.

When we have young guys like Tomori and Zouma, as well as possibly being able to sign players it is a waste of resources to keep him. Put money on you haven't watched a single Derby game this season have you? One of Zouma or Tomori next to Rudiger and we'll just be watching our CB's ping 90 yard balls into the stands all game. 18 hours ago, axman2526 said: Break or policy for him and not JT or Lamps? Madness, as is giving him a new deal in the first place. After he gets torn to shreds by Auba and Lazza we will be back here wondering what the club was thinking...again.... JT and Lamps were both past their best when they left us, one went to the Championship and the other the MLS. No reason they should have been offered more than one year.
May 11, 20197 yr A day after he makes yet another glaring error we give him a two year extension. I think that says we are worried we will be losing our appeal at CAS. Willian and Pedro will be next.

Nope I have not see a whole Derby game this season. Am still of the opinion that a defenders first job is to defend properly. A dying breed of opinion it seems. David Luiz is also well past his best. So if JT and Lamps got 1 year deals why does he deserve 2?

There's the threat of a transfer ban alongside Rudiger possibly out at the start of the season, we had no alternative but to cave really but I'm certain it's a one off.
