Welcome Ross Barkley

I know its a division below but I must admit Mason Mount surely would do no worse than Barkley at the moment and he would learn a hell of a lot more from working with Hazard, Giroud, Jorginho etc than Nugent and Keogh, I'm sure of that.

Mount needs minutes. Playing 3500+ minutes this season with Nugent and Keogh is better than 800 minutes in the Chelsea first team.

I think it's time to start playing RLC over him.

RLC and Sarriball are about as compatible as Sir Alex Ferguson and Liverpool.

Based on what?

I don't think Barkley has been that impressive this season, he hasn't been too bad but as soon as he came on for that Liverpool game it summed him up for me. RLC is 2 years younger and it's probably best if we start giving him the first sub as soon as he's back to fitness.

Barkley has done alright in all of his games. The Liverpool match, our toughest fixture of the season to date, was the only time he’s looked underwhelming.

RLC can’t even stay fit, he’s constantly missing whole months of games through muscle injuries... then when he is playing he barely does anything of note.

I’d rather we persisted with Barkley personally.

Based on absolutely nothing. For what reason would he be less suited than Barkley?

Based on seeing Sarri teams play and seeing Ruben play, Barkley also has his flaws in that regard hence Kovacic coming in.

Will be interesting to see if both Barkley and RLC start this evening.

I get the impression it's generally going to be one or the other playing because they both seem to be competing for that left side of midfield position.

I'd argue RLC is more suited to the style than Barkley and Bakrley is getting plenty of minutes at the moment.

Barkley has been picked for Southgate's latest England squad.

Happy for the lad, he's been good this season. Good, but not great.

He's just missing that extra something so far. Kovacic had that extra something against Liverpool on Saturday, now we need to wait and see if Barkley can step up and do the same.

I love the competition in the squad this season though. It's something we have really lacked in recent years.

Says a lot about the state of Englands midfield when Henderson is nailed on and the likes of Barkley and RLC is getting call ups

The only one that's been great is Hazard.

I was very impressed with his assist - as soon as Hazard is dispossessed Barkley reads the game very well and immediately goes to close down the out ball. Good understanding with Hazard to play him through on goal. Not entirely dissimilar (although over less space) to his assist for Willian against PAOK.

Delighted to see him score too (although not as delighted as him by the looks of things) - may it be the first of many! Barkley is starting to look like a clever transfer on our part.

I said in the Southampton MOTM thread Kovacic has made a decent start and looks a great athlete. But that Barkley looks to have a better final ball and poses more goal threat.

Based on what they have shown so far, if I was looking to defend a lead I would choose Kovacic. If I am looking to score a goal I would pick Barkley.

It's only one  fine performancce so lets not too carried away thinkng  he's finally arrived as the player he was expected to become. As well as his assist and goal, i was just as pleased to see how fit and strong he looked. It looks like he's now mentally fully over his injury problems and getting stuck into it without holding back and that's crucial for any player who's had a bad injury. Hope he contiues to progress. His signing was a bit of a punt but we might end up with a quality player for very little money.
