April 19, 20197 yr Sarri: “The club has an option to retain Giroud for another season. I spoke to the club two days ago and we agreed to exercise the option. So, he will remain. He cannot do anything, I spoke with Marina and she didn’t say to me anything about this question.” Oh dear..

Giroud agreed to a contract with club option for another year and the club decided to activate it. He may not be happy with lack of playing time but like you've mentioned earlier he was fourth in the pecking order at Arsenal, so his situation has definitely improved in that regard. He's certainly playing more now than he would, had he stayed at Arse. In fact Giroud is probably our best option up front at the moment, which is quite sad, if you think about it.
April 19, 20197 yr Especially with the potential transfer ban, I think Olivier should have expected to not be able leave. ESPECIALLY after scoring 10+ goals in a cup competition! It's too bad that it took him as long as it did to get going (not that he was playing bad in the league, he just wasn't scoring). I mean even if we can make transfers, I think Giroud will be needed next year as we transition to a new striker + Tammy. (I'm assuming Tammy spends next year with Chelsea). Hopefully our transfer ban is delayed at least so we can go after a Jovic or someone along those lines, so we don't have to rely on Giroud as much. I do think he is a very serviceable backup.
April 19, 20197 yr So next season, we'll lose our leading scorer (and creater), we'll have a guy who has been essentially a back up for years (Giroud), possibly Higuaín, an unproven striker in Abraham, and an unfavored striker in Michy.
April 19, 20197 yr Good pro who has been that rare thing by chelsea of late - a good signing. Obviously not in drogba's or Costa's class, but far better than the two duds he's been left out for over past 15 months. I hope he does stay...likes of tammy could learn a lot from him

When you consider he played up front in the world cup final with Mbappe and Griezmann in the same team you have to ask why we have not used him more. I think we should have used him a lot more though not for 90 mins.
April 19, 20197 yr Must be watching a different player from everyone else. He is going to be 33 at the start of next season, gets gassed around the 60th min mark, has 5 league goals in 37 appearances for us and 2 league goals in 804 league mins this season. It is all well and good scoring 10 goals in Europa league, but none of the teams we have played would finish in the top 10 if they played in the PL. Who are these supposed “top” teams that want him? He wouldn’t make the bench for any of the teams above us, and that says a lot about the state of our club.

Giroud has done well in Europe, but he has been very average in the premier league when he has started. It really shows how unbelievably poor our recruitment has been that he is probably our best option.

My thought was that both of the players Mbappe and Griezmann were both very quick and ours are not so quick.

None of the teams we have played in the Europa so far would be good enough for the prem let alone top ten.

Deschamps likes Giroud, that's upto him but doesn't mean his France best option or would be a consistent goalscorer for Chelsea in the league. The only reason I wonder why Giroud hasn't played more is because his the best of a bad bunch, I don't rate him much.

If Willian and Pedro were not so poor and everyone bar Ruben useless at scoring goals from midfield he would look much better for us.
April 20, 20197 yr Activating the 1 year renewal probably just means we will sell him and get some money back. Would have been gone on a free otherwise, obviously.

At the moment we are not a top side, we are best of the rest along with Arsenal and United. Liverpool and City are top sides and in fairness he would not get in their teams. On that I would agree.

You’d hope so, I don’t think keeping a player against his will at the club would work out very well. I’d have thought these extension clauses would have to be activated mutually but obviously not.
April 20, 20197 yr A reporter said to Giroud: "You are quite happy to be on the sidelines." Giroud was naturally angered because he thinks himself being ambitious. He said he needs to play more or to move on. He said he will talk to Marina. Personally I think he is in such a good place he will stay and will be happy with any role we give him. I think we should keep him. Excellent in the EL all season. Prem is a bit too much to him strenght and pace-wise.
April 20, 20197 yr Id rather give his minutes to Tammy next season, i mean at least he can run and is homegrown and wont cost us anything. Dont see any benefit in keeping Giroud.

But regardless of any of your valid points he is the most in form striker that we currenlty have. In fact he is the nearest thing remotely resembling a centre forward that we have here. Sarri would rather fail playing Hazard as a false 9 (and pi$$ the lad off no doubt) than play a gassed out 33 year old, that knows how to pin a man, how to win a header, hold up play, spread to the wings, bring others in and chip in with goals. Higuain looks to me like we have signed Benitez again and put a shirt on him!
April 20, 20197 yr I think it's a formality to activate the extra year. If our ban is frozen I expect he'll move on.
April 21, 20197 yr A timely interesting article from Planet football on our mercurial Frenchman: https://www.planetfootball.com/quick-reads/the-stats-behind-olivier-girouds-form/ Europa - goal every 85 mins League - goal or assist every 134 mins, which while modest is better than any of our current alternatives.
May 2, 20197 yr Not really any better than Higuain when he plays like that. Shocking game by him, can't wait for the day we have a competent CF.
May 2, 20197 yr And people want to keep him? He's only good when the ball is in the air but we don't have anyone who can cross a ball.
