Olivier Giroud to Chelsea

Sorry Eden.

Not having a go at you Didier (I never could with someone of that name!) but really dislike nonsense tweets like this, not taking the fact Hazard has barely played due to injury into account. Similar sh*t has been said and written about Loftus-Cheek. I also don't delight in seeing Eden have so much bad luck. The game is missing his skill IMO.

From official Chelsea site.

‘At 34, he is the oldest player to notch a treble in Europe’s elite competition since the legendary Ferenc Puskas,

but last night’s performance was further proof Giroud is, if anything, getting better with age.’

‘It’s always nice to be a part of club history,’ he acknowledged in the aftermath of one of the most special nights of his career.

‘You play football to write great stories. I’m proud. I had great assists from my team-mates and I just tried to finish the job.

‘When I’m on the pitch I’m the happiest man. I just try to be patient, keep the faith and bring something else to the team. It is always special to play in the Champions League and it was an important game to finish first in the group, so I’m pleased to help the team to win.

‘Sometimes you feel anything can happen, and that was one of them.’

A perfect hat trick (and one) away to the Europa League winners?

I f**king love this sexy bar steward

Completely missed the perfect hattrick aspect. Very rare.

Great to see him start and do well. Hopefully he is used a little more now in the right moments. He absolutely has the quality to play a bigger role than he has so far.

The guy just oozes class. So underrated.

Exactly who is underrating him?

He has been on a tear since the World Cup and virtually every pundit in the media extols the virtue of his finishing and 'good touch for a big man'. They call him the best target man in the world.

He's right where he should be, a late bloomer who is at a top club challenging for trophies.

Giroud is lightyears ahead of Tammy as a lone frontman. It’s absolute lunacy to think otherwise.

I tell you whats lunacy, moaning about the player involved in most of our goals, when we're the leading goal scorers in the league. Absolutely crazy.

The longer we don't see Giroud, the more World class he becomes.

Our own fans as pointed out above and repeatedly through this topic.

Giroud should be starting ahead of Tammy against any opposition who know how to defend.

Hopefully this statement from Giroud will now leave FL with no other option to put Tammy back on the bench.

I hate to break it to you but one guy on an internet forum having a different opinion to the majority of football media doesn't equal "underrated"

One guy? I suppose you haven’t quite found the page changing option at the bottom of each page yet.

I mean even if there were 100 fans from on this forum who were anti-Giroud it would still not make him "underrated" given the majority of the football world publically rate him as a top-class performer for the last 3-4 years.

I’m not posting on world football forum, I’m posting on a Chelsea forum. Read multiple comments from the likes of coco, Argo, the guy on the Tammy topic who skates Giroud etc  there are multiple others however you can find these yourself

I agree though, people of actual football knowledge will rate Giroud. Players and ex players opinions hold far more significance.

We should have much better than both Higuain and Giroud, we shouldn't need to rely on Giroud, a player that can barely run and is on his last legs after 70 minutes. But that is the position we are in now, and Giroud is our best striker so he has to play.

I tend to agree with the vast majority of your posts Scott but having just stumbled upon this one from about 20 months ago I couldn't resist the urge to rub your nose in it. Olivier '4 goals' Giroud is thankfully still doing the business 😉.

@MayosNoun! not sure you are getting the point. Very few people (if at all) on this forum are advocating that Tammy or Werner start over Giroud. And I wouldn't advocate that Giroud starts over the other two either.

See, "people of actual football knowledge" will realize that there are multiple reasons these decisions are made. Some are with the long-term in sight (something that you clearly struggle with). We aren't just playing to win the game at hand - we are often playing so that the team learns to work together, often not lose so they gain confidence, keep clean sheets so that the defence gets time to sort itself out, and so that our future prospects learn to gel and work together. All so that we can be a dominant team in the decade to come. This is how transitions are made, looking at the long-term and not at the whims of the MayousNouns of the world.

So Frank may not want the team to depend on Giroud for multiple reasons - maybe he struggles with some training ground routines against high lines with fast defenders, maybe he sees Tammy as someone with great potential and wants him to play so he fulfills that in the future, maybe Giroud isn't able to play two games a week anymore, so many potential reasons. And here we have MayousNoun with his great footballing knowledge having the answers to all questions without knowing anything about the team, how they train, their fitness and and what our long-term ambitions are.

I'm happy that Frank is a good bit more thoughtful than you are.

We have 2 excellent strikers, and one that may be excellent in the future. I will leave it to Frank to decide what's best. It's not like we have Sarri or Rafa Benitez at the helm, whose desire (and pressure) for immediate success might far outweigh the desire for long-term success.

Just look at that. Look at the minutes. Giroud actually has a great conversion rate at Chelsea, his games to goals ratio isn't  very good that's because his caps are inflated with 90th minute apperances. But he's got 6 goals in 3 games if you measure the time to games.

It looks like we have no choice but to have to start playing Giroud more, he's clearly still operating at a high enough level and him leaving the club would be awful I think. I know this could hinder Abrahams potential but the numbers don't lie, Giroud statistically is our best forward. Although we haven't seen Werner enough in the pure striker role yet.

I completely agree, and I don't want to make this a battle of "my striker is better than yours" even though I think comparisons are appropriate.

There are good valid reasons why Tammy has been playing as much as he has, he's a good striker with a lot of potential. The more games the better he will become, he still hasn't hit his prime. However, the numbers after last game are changing drastically. Girouds goals to minutes conversion can't be ignored, he should be playing more in the Premier League. I think it's time to play Giroud more and Abraham less. But that also doesn't mean Abraham stops playing. It's going to get more difficult now with Pulisic back, but if anyone should be behind Werner, I think it has to be Giroud, and depending on how well Werner does in the strikers role, you could argue Giroud should be our current number 1.

I'm interested to see these numbers. What makes Giroud, statistically, our best forward?

Look at the goals per minutes. Even if you take away the Sevilla game Giroud still has the superior goal to minutes stat compared to the other two.

Oli should be starting up top every game, he will bring so much more to players around him. They guy is getting better with age and is a class act, I like Tammy but he still has plenty to do in that main striker role for me.

The goal-to-minute stats for a few hours of football don't really prove him to be our 'best' forward. If you said most 'in-form at the moment' then I'd agree, although until recently Abraham was in fine form and contributing hugely to the overall team performance (which doesn't show up in the statistics). Hopefully Giroud will feature more in the first 11 in the near future. The Christman period will probably be mental so it's good we three decent forwards available to us.

I noticed we started the season with Tammy last year as we are doing again and then Giroud started to get more game time around February and then play a lot more regularly.

I think he has forced himself into the team against Leeds if only for 60-70 mins, his finishing is so much better then Tammy's yet his opportunity for a full game happened after resting players.

Suspect Tammy is better in training.
