Following Our Nearest & Dearest Rivals, 2018/2019

Couldn't think of anywhere else to post this. Mods, please move is there is a thread about safe-standing.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45341192

The Football Association has lent its support to safe standing at football grounds in England if there is "clear evidence that satisfies authorities".

The Premier League and EFL have also said they would support clubs' choice to install safe standing in the top two tiers of English football.

A government review is ongoing with a conclusion expected by the end of 2018.

Standing in English football's top two divisions was outlawed by the Football Spectators' Act in 1989.

It came following recommendations made in the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans.

An FA spokesperson said: "The FA supported the announcement from Sports Minister Tracey Crouch in June to conduct an external analysis of evidence in relation to the all-seater policy".

The statement added that the FA "supports clubs and leagues in having the option to choose whether they wish to provide standing options for supporters should there be clear evidence that satisfies the authorities over safety and security".

Support from fans has been growing for safe standing in recent years, with Celtic already adopting rail seating at their Celtic Park stadium.

In a recent survey run by the EFL, 94% of the 33,000 respondents said fans should be allowed to choose whether they wanted to stand or sit at games.

And in a Premier League survey, 70% of fans who attended games agreed in principle that standing should be offered as a choice.

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch said her "mind was open" to safe standing during a parliamentary debate in June after apologising for saying only a "vocal minority" wanted standing areas.

'FA support hugely encouraging'

The Football Supporters' Federation (FSF), which has been campaigning for the introduction of safe standing to combat the problem of people standing up in seats and potentially causing injury, said the FA's support was "hugely encouraging".

But FSF's Peter Daykin said the FA's stance was "not surprising" as fans at Wembley often stood during games. "The FA understands the issues all too well," he added.

"The government said it wouldn't move until all the football authorities spoke with one voice, which is understandable, but now they are, all eyes are on the review.

"We are happy for the government to take its time with the review. We want a thorough understanding of all the arguments and it's too important an issue to rush."

Shrewsbury Town have already installed it and it's proving popular with the fans so far.  I'm pretty sure they were still going to go ahead with it if they'd won promotion to the Championship this season but I may be wrong.

Have you experienced the "safe standing" at Shrewsbury BQ ?. And if so how was it from your personal point of view ?.

No not yet but my son went in there on the first game of the season and said it was good. It's at the opposite end of the pitch to the area where the singers usually "sit" (they all stand anyway) so it's resulted in there now being two pockets of singers which creates a better atmosphere. I would give it a go there but we have a season ticket in the stand.

Surely you can’t get more fans in the stadium though with safe standing?

No same capacity I think.  I think my son said it did feel better than just standing up with seats as it felt there was less chance of tripping over seats - probably especially if jumping around after scoring - sadly, he didn't experience that though - 1-0 defeat!

And a third goal for Forest on the 96th! (And if I'm not mistaken after Kenedy losing the ball)

Don't think I will ever understand why clubs like Newcastle don't take the cup competitions seriously. It must drive their supporters mad.

Totally agree and it would drive me mad as a fan of a club who can't realistically expect to win a major trophy if they don't bother in something they could actually do well in.  I love winning matches and any match should be approached to be won.  A good cup run can feel so good.

That said, I can see that later in the season a cup run can impact on league performance to the extent that relegation could threaten and then I can see the temptation to concentrate on the league, being more financially rewarding.  But certainly at this time of the season, go for it.

Did you not know? They’re a massive club who are obviously focusing on their title challenge rather than bothering with a Mickey Mouse trophy. Souness said so. Do you live under a rock or something?

I assume because staying in the league will provide more £ for Mike Ashley to siphon off.

There was a time I hoped Kenedy would be given a proper chance with us as I could see he had something about him. But he's a fine example of plenty of potential but will never live up to it and at times he looks a complete liability. Switches off too often and has a side to his game that means he's likely to pick up red cards.

Heard a bar-code moaning on the radio the other day, saying he looks a different player to the one they saw last season and can see why Chelsea were happy to loan him out again :laugh2:

Could see Utd going through if they don't bottle it like they did against Sevilla last season. Valencia are a good side, but Utd should be beating them tbh.
