We've got a new Kepa

Featured Replies

Both Kepa and Ederson made a poor pass that resulted in a goal chance. Both made a good save after a header as well, the difference being Ederson made more saves overall.

City without Aguero looks be at a similar level as we are, ok they played Fernandinho as a CB and obviously they dominated the possession but we will catch up next season, after all Pep had years to make his team and Frank is just getting started.

I disagree. He's been 6/10 in both games for me.

I'm apparently in a minority that thinks he made a mistake for villas goal, but I'm firmly of the belief that he made a basic gk error there. He also nearly gave away a goal last night and probably should have.

Free kick happens, not his fault. He has looked slightly more confident on crosses. But hes not a world class keeper and he never will be.

I thought he was at fault for villas goal, off balance and feebily pushed ball into danger zone, still disappointed with free kick last night, got across then didn't put hands up, ball didn't go in top corner

It should give you pause that maybe you are too harsh on him because everybody else knows he had no chance. You have to be the worlds hardest taskmaster to expect him to have saved that.

I think people are justified in thinking he should have put his arms out. I have a suspicion as he knew where it was going very early he should have been able to get to it, but I'll let it pass.

We all know Frank's hands are tied when its comes to kepa, who ever on the board royally f**ked up with the money payed, frank is building a side  and kepa would definitely not be his ideal goalkeeper if he could get one.

You're just guessing here that Lampard would prefer another goalie. He put Willy in for a few matches, and then switched back to starting Kepa, despite Willy doing well. Trying a new goalkeeping coach would make more sense before discarding a hugely expensive goalie. Having Cech around doesn't mean he's coaching Kepa, and if he were, a good player doesn't necessarily make a good coach.

BTW, has any goalkeeper from our academy ever claimed a starting position in our team?

No I know no-one from our academy has,but but until now we have never had a manager like frank,Jody and him seem to have a better understanding of our youth prospects.

Myah, I was thinking more recently

I think the last academy keeper to actually play a competitive game for the first team was Lenny Pidgeley back in 2005.

I believe the last very good English goalkeeper to be produced from a big teams academy and play regularly was Paul Robinson at Leeds in 1998.

Dean Henderson for united is the next likely one.

It's incredibly difficult to identify goalkeeper talent at an early age for some reason.

I think it has lots to do with how they develop physically. There are certain physical requirements you need as a keeper that are non negotiable at the top level. You've either got to be tall with long arms or have amazing relfexes and flexibility.

Most footballers are identified at a really early age. Some of our first teamers have been here since they were 8. Hard to identify a guy who will be 6ft 2 plus and have the reflexes required at that age. Even hard to identify some kids at 16 who will get to that height.

A Courtois who emerged playing for a good club at nearly 2m tall at 18 is an exception.

Dunno, there are many snakes which are 2 metres long or more!

Nah Courtois couldn't have been a snake. A snake could never have let so many shots in between his legs!

Bolton .... remember?

It's been a week and I still have no idea what this means.

He'll never be a top keeper and I think he's fortunate that there are no fans because he'd be getting some stick. I hear the Ajax keeper might be available I'd take him in a heartbeat.

He was not worth half of what they paid for him.
But he is not to blame for what they paid for him.

A player is not just statistics, physics and marketing.
Kepa has a personality and an ego that have already caused him problems in Bilbao.
When you are going to pay for the most expensive goalkeeper in history, you have to know what you are going to buy, down to the smallest detail.

Lampard made him sit on the bench.
Was that enough?
Will it improve something?
What to do now?

Nobody is going to buy him without a huge devaluation, the most we can get is an exchange that can be interesting, for a player we need.

Obviously he is also a victim of the disaster that is our team at the defensive level.

A better coach and a better collective performance will make him look better and be more secure.

Utter useless.  no authority in goal whatsoever.  He completed three tasks tonight; collecting the ball out of a net.  I hope we move him on or demote him.  Easily costs us 6-12 points a season.
