He f**ked up badly at Tottenham (only for classic Tottenham to outdo him by conspiring to be offside), should have stopped KDB's shot and was rooted to his line for Brighton's corner. The idea he didn't do anything wrong just isn't true. I wouldn't be microanalysising that if we were discussing him as a back up (he's number 2 for a reason that's fine) but in the context of him being number 1 that was simply too many mistakes in such a short period of time. August 9, 20223 yr Both aren't top tier - that's the problem. Mendy has too many howlers in his game - at times even playing simple passes without any pressure becomes a hurdle. And that's with a back 3, heavy possession side where he is involved to a minimum. He'd have to increase his reliability with the ball at his feet by quite a margin if we'd really want to challenge for the PL title some day.

If you're listing individual mistakes from Kepa, we could be here a while for Mendy's. Even Thiago was pissed the other day cause the lad got frightened to kick a ball.
August 21, 20223 yr Said weeks/months ago, we need to include Kepa! If its just to give Mendy some time away to compose himself a bit! He is giving off some later-career Dave Beasant vibes!

He benefited from the Sarri effect Kepa benefited from where a goal keeper with a lot of clean sheets got praised because of the defence in front of him but statistically he wasn't performing well. He's not a good shot stopper, has one of the lowest save percentages in the league and is the worst player in premier league history with the ball at his feet. The only thing he's ever done well is claim crosses which obviously got him a lot of praise after Kepa but now he's not as confident coming out as he was when we signed him. Never going to challenge for the title with Mendy in goal he's a million miles away from the top keepers. Edited August 21, 20223 yr by HazardousChoice
August 21, 20223 yr Really worried about him now. Having a goalkeeper who is terrible with his feet but trying to pass out from the back clearly doesn’t work. Might soon be time to either tell him to hoof it every time or find a goalkeeper who can use his feet. Pep done it with Joe Hart. We either accept he’s gonna cost us a few unnecessary goals per season or we look to fix it. I personally think we should fix it as forwards will start targeting him.
August 21, 20223 yr Clearly the weakest keeper in the "top 6". On current form you couldn't see him getting into many PL sides. Time to be dropped. Edited August 21, 20223 yr by Nibs
August 21, 20223 yr Tear the new contract offer to shreds and sell him. Someone will take him. Kepa is every bit as good and much much better with the ball which we need.

August 21, 20223 yr Blimey, forgot all the talk on Sky recently was about Mendy's representatives wanting to open talks about a new improved deal. Yeah - good luck with that.........................!!!
August 21, 20223 yr Every game he either costs us or nearly costs us trying to pass out from the back. I'm sick of it. He's not even that good of a shot stopper any more. it seems like he had a few good months towards the end of the CL winning season, and has just gone to sh*t since then.
August 21, 20223 yr Even if fhe doesn't make the first goal a reality, the second and third still lose us the match.

August 21, 20223 yr He replaced a far better Keeper when he returned from AFCON who only got invited back to sky rocket a penalty since! Shameful!

Anyway as much as he needs to be benched, so does Sterling, Havertz and Mount that's my view.

And he had plenty of a long course now. Thing is if your team can‘t trust their goalie it destabilizes the whole construct. That‘s different to your attacking players that at least do work a lot and try to make things happen.
August 21, 20223 yr If you bench him now it would be really damaging. I would give him another chance against Leicester. his shotstopping isn’t the problem. It’s his distribution. He should take less risk in these situations. he is a better goalkeeper than Kepa. Kepa made mistakes in both his distribution and his shotstopping and had the lowest save percentage his distribution wasnt even that bad today except for that mistake. And he still looked quite composed after his mistake. Edited August 21, 20223 yr by azpi28
August 21, 20223 yr Kepa used to before Mendy arrived but would be interested in seeing those good ol’ stats in the limited time he covered him from the last year. Even the free kick today, Mendy was way off his line. I think we should at least look how Kepa is nowadays, cause it’s been far too long to even judge him now. If Mendy needs a break, now is definitely the time to do it!

And he still looked quite composed after his mistake. It's not just his distribution, it's his behaviour under pressure. Take Jorginho for example; his distribution is brilliant but when he's in trouble and doesn't hoof it he gets criticized and rightfully so, because we don't want intricate tiki-taka solutions in our own box. But he's a midfielder and has a few players behind him, so it's at least understandable. Trying to dribble after a bad first touch is infinitely worse and displaying a horrible footballing brain for a CB, let alone a keeper. This is basic risk management you learn as a kid. The other pressure situations Mendy finds himself in are penalties and correct me if I'm wrong, but iirc his record is horrible.
August 21, 20223 yr Very disappointed by Mendy. The first real mistake I recall him making was away to West Ham last year. A lucky shot that he palmed in. Since then he’s been quite shaky. Terrible mistake vs Madrid, today, I believe Arsenal, even preseason vs Udinese, and I am sure there are more. We were a nervous wreck at the back when he joined and his presence changed a lot. That said, his limitations and mistakes are a bit of a problem now. I’d give Kepa a run
August 21, 20223 yr I know that he lost the ball trying to dribble over the line, but seconds before Silva and Reece had been arguing strongly and that back pass to him was a reflection of them losing focus over it. Yes, Mendy needs to be dropped, I’ve been arguing for it since last season, but I don’t think todays first goal was totally on him. And, unfortunately, that mistake was what set Leeds off to press and fight every single ball.

No he really isn't. Or to qualify that he may be better with the ball at his feet compared to Mendy but this narrative about him being a ball playing keeper is a complete fallacy and has no basis at all. He can do the easy clips to the wings to unmarked players if he is not under pressure, anything else is punted into the centre circle for a 50/50.
