Okay so he got his knickers in a twist and took too long with the ball under his feet so panicked. Boot it away, away from danger. Well no need, actually to even do that, he wasn't in his goal and was a yard from the goal line, just back heel it or side foot it off the pitch. The attacker is conditioned to think that he is going to try to play the way he is facing and get the ball up the pitch or in to touch as far away as possible, so don't, just pass it off the pitch at the nearest point and give away a corner. Common sense I put it down to narcissism. Putting himself first, wanting to look good by embarrassing an outfield player, rather than thinking of the team and taking the sensible 'common sense' solution, i hope Tuchel hammers him for that in some way, we can't have a narcissistic goalie.

Not two anyway

Exactly! When he first arrived he used to do the simple things well like coming for crosses and commanding his area. That was one of the main differences between him and Kepa back then. Like you said he doesn’t do that any more and we concede a few goals from set pieces because of it. I also wonder if his goalkeeper Ballon D’or snub is affecting him as well and even changed how he does things now. I’ve noticed that even the saves he should be making he flies through the air to make them look even better. Trying to create a highlight reel for something like Ballon D’or is a dangerous thing for a goalkeeper to do and leads to unnecessary risks like what he did on Sunday. I’m not a fan of goalkeepers making saves look harder than they actually are. I’d much rather have a keeper who calmly catches crosses or palms shots over the over bar without flying through the air for dramatic effect all day long. Edited August 23, 20223 yr by 2211

August 27, 20223 yr If we don't start Mendy today. We lose. You don't drop a keeper for a howler that doesn't involve saving the ball for a keeper that cannot save anything.

Kepa can only be judged by his most recent run of when Mendy was at AFCON. We saw a better keeper then as what we have now. Would he come back in the team with the same form, probably not, as he’s only been default invited to sky rocket a penalty since! But at least let’s have a look at him and let Mendy practise some kicks under pressure!
August 27, 20223 yr Mendy is costing us chances or goals week in week out. Unbelievably poor with the ball at his feet. Looking worse coming for crosses, than at any other point during his chelsea career. Beaten at his near post. We were very lucky that Vardy didn't have his shooting boots and that the ref was very kind to rule out that goal - never a foul, and Me du was simply weak. I genuinely don't know what to do. Surely Kepa isn't the answer....but at the moment I am not sure Mendy is either.

August 28, 20223 yr I’m not comfortable with Mendy at all. Even the Leicester goal came from a poor long kick/chip up the field. We have/had bigger priorities, but we need to address the GK next summer. Edited August 28, 20223 yr by PhilH930
August 28, 20223 yr Needs to come and collect crosses.. he should have been agressive against spurs on coming for the ball.. you need that from your keeper in the last minute of the game… similarly didn’t come to collect anything yesterday also.. he is clearly not confident at the moment.. getting beaten at the near post again very poor .. no way that should have gone in.. he needs to up his game has been extremely poor at the start of the season .. has played a big part in losing us 5 points this season already.

Sad but true. 2021 may well have been his Malouda year.
August 28, 20223 yr Should not have been beaten at near post that easily, there's a reason we don't see many goals like that in the PL, it's bread and butter for most keepers. I think he should be dropped, unless Kepa is doing dogsh1t in training.
August 28, 20223 yr Ye id stick Kepa in, if a player is not on form and since last April been costing us bigtime, what message does it send out if we continue to play him. During AFCON kepa barely conceeded a goal, he deserves his chance. Also when does that Slonina get here? January I believe, might be his time to shine. Edited August 28, 20223 yr by Oli

That would have beaten a lot of keepers. Kepa wouldn't have saved it, I have seen him beaten countless times from a powerful shot. Even Courtois gets beaten by them and he is rated as the best keeper in the world right now. Edited August 28, 20223 yr by Scott Harris

Keepers not getting beat at their near post is old school football rubbish and doesnt mean a lot in todays game. All a keeper can do is manage his angles. The players proximity, the alignment of alternative finishers, and the power and accuracy of the strike can all result in a keeper being beaten comfortably at his near post. In this instance Barnes took the strike early on his left foot. It didn't look like Mendy was set, so if he was in the process of setting himself and his feet were off the ground, he would need to touch down and then push off into his dive. A split second but enough for the ball to be past him.

His confidence from set pieces has completely gone at this point, he panics and when your goalkeeper panics, the CB's tend to panic too. This is why we look so poor defending set pieces of late.
August 29, 20223 yr Edouard Mendy (Chelsea): What a difference a week makes. Against Leeds, Edouard Mendy had what I could only describe as a shocker. Six days later, he makes two saves that deny Leicester, with 11 men, from sharing the points with a Chelsea team who were down to 10. The save from Ayoze Perez was absolutely brilliant and would have gone in had it not been for the Senegal goalkeeper's fingertip save to push the ball on to the bar. Some managers would have left Mendy out after his performance against Leeds but not Thomas Tuchel. He clearly has a lot of faith in the 30-year-old. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/62707562
August 30, 20223 yr Hard to really blame Mendy for any of the goals but doesn't look comfortable at set pieces anymore clearly. I feel opposition teams are targeting that him, a problem, a real problem.
August 30, 20223 yr When the Saints fans are shouting shoot to players with the ball outside the box, you know other teams can see hes weak! Couldn't imagine anyone screaming for a shot there in the Courtois/Cech days! You would be trolling yourselves!
