Assuming this gets wrapped up then I think Dembele looks pretty smart. People's actions should be judged against the goal they are trying to achieve.

For a long time it seemed clear that what Dembele wanted was to extract the best possible deal from Barca and extend. He was never going to make any decision until he believed that he had seen the best offer Barcelona would make and he played his hand to the end in pursuit of that aim. It is very possible that we made him a better offer than Barca did but getting the best financial offer whoever it came from was not the player's aim. He just wanted to get the best offer from his current club. He's got what he wanted and that equals smart.

The one thing to guard against is pissing off other club's by stringing them along. That problem is dead easy to avoid though and anyone but the most imbecilic agent could overcome it. You just make it clear to any club you negotiate with that the player's priority is to stay with Barca if they make him an acceptable offer but that he is willing to listen to their proposals if they have any. Then it's in the pursuing club's hands to make a pitch or not.

also i really doubt he is such an improvement over a Hudson-Odoi or a Pulisic

Cant be true. Fairly sure that @LongtimerLurker told us his source had advised that Dembele to us was a done deal. This Barca contract must be a red herring.....

he's on 13,5 million a year but still is entitled to 17 million 

over a 4 year deal that would be 17,75 a year that he needs to earn to make up for the 17 million barcelona doesnt intend to pay him

United would have to pay him 341K a week to correct that, it would probably be closer to 400k as he doesn't even want to join them

Long story short I believe this was all a calculated move by Dembele and his agent. I believe Barca knew all along he would stay and perhaps even told him about waiting until after his contract expired. 

The reason why this is significant is because his contract expired on the 30th June, a relevant date as that's when Barca get paid. Their "Spotify deal activated after June 30th (60-70m/y) - Barca sold on June 30th, 10 % of TV rights 25 years deal to US Sixth Street-Sport investment worth €210m+".
