Hard to know. I think the consensus is that Winstanley was way too slow to move on these targets and may pay the price now the big bosses have stepped in. Also they did have to shift a lot of big wages from the club first.

I agree but I am not sure how that would have spun out with the FFP potential 

Been told #ChelseaFC got an agreement on 50M£ with #SouthamptonFC on Romeo Lavia. 
The Blues finally reached the values of the #SaintsFC & wants to bypass #LiverpoolFC on their priority target as they did on Caicedo. The Belgian midfielder has already told some of his teammates his goodbyes. 
✍🏼 Five years + one year option contract ready. 
🔴 A last minute bid of #LiverpoolFC for Lavia (who said since yesterday night to one of his partner that he wants to be in Liverpool) wouldn’t be a non-sense though.

Boehly & Eghbali have taken over negotiations. Strategic games.

Liverpool have not removed their bid for Caicedo. Chelsea want the bid removed, as Caicedo has made it clear he wants to join Chelsea & then Chelsea won’t have to go above Liverpool’s bid.

Brighton have asked Liverpool to keep their bid in, so Chelsea forced to bid again.

As a retaliation, Chelsea (similar to Liverpool with Caicedo) have put a £50m overall package bid in for Romeo Lavia to Southampton that has been accepted.

Chelsea will happily take the player, they love Lavia, but equally they want to try & force Liverpool to remove their bid for Caicedo & instead move for Lavia.

Lots of moving parts.

Once again, Chelsea would happily take Lavia along with Caicedo, but main focus is Caicedo & Chelsea want Liverpool to remove their bid for him since the player has made it clear he only wants to join Chelsea.

That will eventually happen. Too bad it would be because of asking a valid question, however. If these are "strategic games", saying that "Chelsea wants Liverpool to remove their bid" is like me asking my opponent in chess to remove their king. Great if it works but the opponent is likely to say "no, I don't think so". You'll have to have a better strategic plan I think.
