Another Winger! - Noni Madueke

No doubt he has talent, and he is prepared to do the defensive duties too, but for sure he lacks consistency. I don't think Maresca's public comments have helped him at all. Everything he has said about Madueke, could also have been said about Jackson's performances. It smacks of scapegoating.

The hardman manager tactic won't work with Noni I feel. It needs a more mentoring approach. Good man managers like Redknapp and Venables could form a bond with wayward, (often lazy), but talented footballers and get them to run through brick walls for them and play to their maximum effort and potential.

I also firmly believe all our wingers would look better if we had a proper centre-forward who could hold the ball up under pressure when needed and was also decent in the air. Neto is a good crosser of the ball, so is Madueke. But it's pointless because there is no centre-forward attacking those crosses.

At his best, how many wingers in the league are better than him? I wouldn't wager many disregarding the obvious names.

He's ideal in this system and is still very young.

Agree with you both.

I believe Maresca has unsettled the squad with how he has treated some of the players differently to others.

No, Noni still needs to do his part as well. This is the 3rd time now its been reported he's had training issues. This is a two-way street.

Players aren't stupid. They will hear and take notice of the manager saying one thing about one player and another thing about another player in a similar situation. Maresca really isn't helping himself by treating players differently.

Well yes, professionalism is a must. Dont make it public though, keep it in house.

Can't really keep it in house when Maresca said day one of his appointment that if players are training poorly, they wouldn't play.

Just say he is sick or has a minor injury. We did thar to cover Mudryks absence before the drug ban came to light.

I think these players need to grow up. Whether Maresca lies or abruptly tells the public on Noni's situation, the bigger issue is that a professional footballer earning millions in wages is continuing to have a poor training work ethic. He isn't Hazard where he can justify it by being the best player on the pitch 9 times out of 10. It's even more frustrating because Madueke was the most trusted winger for Maresca at the start. I was singing his praises that amidst almost being sold he rose to the occasions and now he's seemed to have gotten too comfortable for Maresca's liking.

I find Madueke very frustrating.  At his best I see him as our best winger.  Takes players on at pace, puts them on the back foot, delivers dangerous crosses and he does track back too which is much needed, especially with our full backs.

At his worst he has the first touch of Prince Andrew, his final ball is atrocious, and he runs into players rather than round them.

Unfortunately his average seems to be more toward the worst version than the best.

I think you are asking too much for the players to grow up. Each generation of footballers only brings the percentage of immature ones up to new levels.

100% agree that our wingers need a target man who can hold up the ball to flourish more.

He's still dining off that Wolves performance. He's still a young player, but you can't have a couple of great performances, but then show unprofessionalism and let the ego get the better of you.

Hi all,

I'm a PSV Eindhoven supporter, and I only registered on your forum for this post.
We are super proud that Noni is doing so well with you. We would have loved to see him shine with us a little longer, but unfortunately, he left us even before we got the chance to bring the song we had for him to the stadium. Since we think it's quite a great chant, we'd love to share it with you!

Noni Madueke's name fits perfectly with the song "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League.

We had a Dutch version of the lyrics, but I can’t imagine you guys wouldn’t come up with an equally brilliant English version!

No-ni Madueke!
Noni, score that go-ho-oal!

Seems to have fallen of a cliff.. has looked slow and lacking pace and quality.

Crazy thing is he is the only one of the 3 that you look at and feel he has the potential to be better than he is. He has missed 11 big chances in the league which has him at 5th just behind Jackson with 13 (Watkins, Halaand & Salah top the list). I do wonder if you just continue starting him considering the other 2 aren’t exactly pulling up trees, even if it’s 50-60mins a game. He is taking 2.9 shots per game, most quality wingers in the league average 2. Sancho at 0.9 and Neto at 1.3 are both hopeless so you can’t squeeze anything out of them. Surely you give him a 5-6 stretch of starts and the confidence should return.

Could it be down to his falling foul of Maresca a few times?

Keep playing him and he's going to grow faster than anyone else, just keep playing him.

Let's go Noni!

That is where I am at with him also. It was a very poor performance but I would take that every game if he keeps scoring and or assisting. He has the same amount of contributions (G+A)  as Sancho & Neto combined. With Jackson’s form now fallen off a cliff Palmer is our only potent option in our 1st 11. If anyone is wondering how dire our other options are, Neto played 62mins and had 0 shot, attempted 0 dribbles, won 0 ground duels, and won 0 aerial duels. He might as well have been sitting in the stands.

Going forward it’s Madueke + one of the other two, neither are good enough but we aren’t getting top 4 with 2 wingers who attempt 0.9 shots & 1.2 shots per game irrespective of who is our No 9.

Summed up nicely Loz and exactly how he was last night.

Gave us a fair bit more than Neto, but boy at times was he bad. One bit in the second half and he miss controlled the ball and it ran into touch - when that happens you want to see the player hurting and trying to make up for it, but with Noni, it's a shrug and a smirk. He's just too laid back at times and (like most of our squad) needs to add consistency to his game.

I just don't see how he gets much better than he currently is but unfortunately we don't have a better option at right wing so he has to keep playing.

Thanks for the post and info, I wasn't aware about Neto's contribution, or lack thereof.

I agree with the sentiment, Neto did not offer much at all. That being said, what are those stats based on? He beat his man a number of times to cross the ball, and also he dribbled inside a number of times too. What does that statistics site define "a dribble attempt". He also won a number of headers, despite his size.

Again, I think Neto was ineffective but I find it weird that, having been at the game and seen him dribble a number of times and win several headers, the stats say the complete opposite.

Finding out proper definitions for some of the statistics that get bandied about is nigh on impossible.

I suspect much of it is subjective, based on someone watching the game clicking on buttons when they notice various "events", or maybe AI doing the "watching".

If you remember the early days of serve statistics, #aces, # forehand winners and stuff like that at the Wimbledon tennis, this is exactly how it worked. I know because I was one of the scoreboard operators from 1987 to 1993 who stood on the court punching the buttons, that then flashed the data points up on your TV ! The accuracy of the data very much depended on my user input, and my interpretation of the event 🙂

Its do or die for Noni in chelsea blue. Ten goal contributions needed between now and end of season or I have no problem shipping him out to a mid table premiership club, which is where his ability curently sits.

His attitude stinks... really, his ego is killing his career. Smug, self assured and arrogant is how I'd describe his playing style and he delivers very little on the pitch. So much so he had to take someone else's goal last night.

Dumped from my fantasy team to be replaced by James this morning who is a player who knows how to patrol wing areas and will probably finish the season with more goal contributions than Noni.

Hes basically Schrodinger's winger, our best and worst wide player at exactly the same time.
