You gotta love it, 'Chelsea's Enzo gets the winner to send Argentina through'.

At 2-0 down Argentina were rocking even Simeone walks out of his private box only coming back after Romero's bullet header.

Egypt yep maybe the ref missed a foul yet they still had time yet they took off too many top players too soon.

It wasn’t a foul.

Is there a replay anywhere? Apparently there was contact.

there was contact for sure. One can call it a soft foul, but it's a 50/50 call either way you look at it.
The only strange game for me, as in very homey, was Mexico x England where all 50/50s went Mexico's way.

God I hate pundits sometimes.

"It was a good goal so that foul shouldn't matter"

Without that foul, that entire attack doesn't happen. Happens to often in the premier league that a midfielder gets fouled, ref doesn't give it and the attacking player now has a clear run all the way to goal.

Totally agree.

So another £10 million on his asking price for Enzo

Nah, just ask Everton what they want for KDH and slap the same price tag on Enzo. I'm sure Madrid and another dozen clubs will be lining up with their £25m in cash. 😁

No affinity to Egypt but they were robbed !

Now watching Columbia vs Switzerland- the first half was, i’ll be polite, dull

It was a soft call indeed, and I generally don't like VAR intervening here esp after so much play has taken place after the supposed foul. It was still a single call though. Game was still 1x0 and they still managed to score the second later. They might have scored the third or not—goals change games.

Fact is that they were unable to hold to the lead and conceded from a cheap counter in the end. So, I wouldn't simply point to the officials here tbh.
For me this is a very common tale in WC: smaller teams like Egypt, who have 2-3 excellent players typically suffer from squad depth, which typically becomes a problem past the 70th minute.

The thing is, the only way to disallow that 3rd Argentina goal is to bring it all the way back to the Salah foul and give Egypt a penalty.

The problem was there was no in between, you either award the goal or give Egypt a penalty.

IMO I didn't think it was clear cut enough to bring it all the way back and give Egypt a penalty.

Potato, potatoes.

It wasn't in line with the previous decisions so I really don't care that is overturned / suspended/ ignored.

It hardly made a difference.

I find all the discussion of rights and wrongs of football refereeing and VAR etc all kind of pointless now. It’s disappeared so far up its own arse now in complexion and inconsistency, and with the cherry on top that even presidents can change things right or wrong to suit their will.

That aside, I might be wrong, but so far this knockout stage seems to have been very light in penalty shootouts so far. And that surprises me, in a good way.
