Piatek and Cavani look to be off the table now so this may just be case of media speculating because they know we were interested in a striker. 

I’d take Mertens on 1.5 years. Hardly going to stand in the way on Pulisic and Cho. Probably losing Pedro soon and he’s a better goal threat than any of our current 4.

We sold both Hector and Djilobodji for more than we paid for them.

So we are down to Falcao, Miazga, Kenedy, Rahman for the title of worst signing that year. I think it probably has to be Baba as he cost the most ... although Falcao runs him close, and didn't we actually have Pato on loan that year as well, now I think about it ?

We did have Pato on loan for the second half of that season. I think Pato and Falcao managed a goal each. Baba Rahman is still a Chelsea player and on loan at Mallorca currently. I believe his contract is up this summer so we will presumably let him leave on a free transfer at that point.

Yeah we can’t seem to identify any player under the age of 36 without Michael here. Very underrated at the time and sorely missed now.

His reputation has aged well. Like Mikel no one quite realised he was good until after he left. 

At least unlike Mikel we haven't replaced him with a poor Italian/Brazilian impersonation who can do the 5 yard sideways passes but can't defend...

I disagree with everything you’ve just said. I hope Mikel finds you and passes you 5 yards sideways out a window, he has the capabilities!

I wasn't a big fan of Mikel, but I do sometimes wonder how well he would have done in Jorginho's role. Dictating play in the middle at his own pace was something Mikel was actually pretty decent at. He was a lot stronger than Jorginho too, so strength wouldn't have been something to worry about.

Rose could have the ability of prime Ashley Cole and I still wouldn't want the repulsive c**t anywhere near Stamford Bridge.

Personally think Alonso is lacking a lot more than just pace. As a left wing back he isn't as exposed but we've played with a back 4 more often than not this year.

In my opinion he's an upgrade on Emerson and a better left back than Alonso, so does in fact make us stronger.

Being linked to Dries Mertens, I think he would be a great replacement if we managed to move Giroud on, plus he is still a great player.

Both Mail and the Telegraph are linking us with Merhtens.

Can't see any chat about Dembele who we were previously linked with, though don't see that as a good sign...................

Mertens for £5m wouldn't be the worst signing tbh.  He's still a great finisher and can play wide as well as through the middle.

I guess this will allow an unhappy Giroud to move, the interesting part will be Mertens knows Bats from Belgium and can this help Bats play better for us.

Every report coming out of Italy says that Napoli don't want to sell him so it's looking unlikely.

I’d take Mertens, despite him being 53 he’d be an improvement over Bats.

The only thing is what do we do with him next season? It’s a real possibility he’ll end up like Pedro. Too old and past it.

Surely there is a striker who is a couple of years younger can be signed for around 20m? Even a 30 year old striker would be better.
