The FA's retrospective system is so flawed, I wouldn't have been surprised if Torres got a life ban.

Look at Aguero on Luiz (which by the way, got absolutely no media attention...) and Mcmanaman on Haidara last season... if they don't get any form of retrospective punishment why should Torres for brushing Vertonghen with his lovely manicured nails?

Common sense seems to have prevailed this time, but they have no structure in their process. Making it up as they go along.

I believe this new ruling only came out during the start of this season, which is why is wasn't applied back there. Maybe?

The fa are just one big joke they really are. They wanted to punish him but because of there own sh*t rules they can't. I don't think it deserved punishing in the first place but the fact they did think it needed punishing but can't is hilarious.

Stick it up em now nando and start getting the goals your play has deserved this season!

Yeah he will.  Can't give you more info because no point watching the game then. haha.  All joking aside he's playing well and I would love it to continue so I want to support him.

fingers crossed its eto'o instead. be nice to see him get off the mark

Well he was banned for the weekend game anyway so maybe he'll have shaken off the knee injury by next week.

I do think he was very lucky to escape that ban for that swipe on Vertonghen though. He was wrongly sent off for trying to win the ball but that clawing at the guy's face was just flat out assault. Very lucky boy indeed.

AVB slams FA for Torres decision

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has branded the Football Association’s decision not to take retrospective action against Chelsea’s Fernando Torres ‘a disgrace’.

Torres was sent off for two yellow cards during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham, but he was lucky to avoid a straight red card for an incident involved Han Vertonghen earlier in the match.

Television replays showed the striker scratching the face of the Spurs defender, leaving visible marks, but the FA were unable to take any action against the Spaniard because the incident was witnessed by one of the match officials.

Villas-Boas is unhappy with the ruling, branding the decision as disgraceful and farcical.

“It’s extremely difficult to know where to start,” Villas-Boas told reporters ahead of Spurs’ Europa League clash with Anzhi.

“Obviously, it is almost a farcical decision. It doesn’t matter to me which player or club is involved.

“Neither do I want to with my words put into question Fernando’s integrity; neither their manager’s, in trying to defend what is our position.

“I think the FA has made a decision almost a joke. It looks incredible.

“How can you see the images, pretty clear, and come out without punishment, on something (which) overtakes all professional behaviour?

“I think the decision is a disgrace. If the committee can’t solve such clear images I don’t think it sets out a good first example and we’re not asking nobody to retract themselves; the player to retract themselves. That would not be fair.

“This is a competition and in the end they came up with what they thought was fair for that. We don’t want Fernando suspended because it can make them weaker, because their bench is so strong, but I think the FA has lost all opportunity to put some sense into the images everybody saw.

“I’m extremely grateful for ex-refs to be able to enlighten people a little bit more, though I think most of you guys saw the incident as something that is not tolerable in football.”

AVB is a bit of prick, isnt he

It's fine defending your own player but to call it a disgrace because Torres didn't get an extra 3 game ban is pathetic. Would he be calling it a disgrace if Torres had done that when he was managing Chelsea ? i very much doubt it.

bit of an overreaction. i dont think AVB said anything too out of order. he was defending his player/squad as we would expect Jose to do. in Jose's defence of Torres he also criticised Vertonghen, so why wouldnt AVB do the same back?

At the end of the day, we got the verdict we wanted, and obviously thats annoyed AVB and spurs.

Moyes was insinuating that the FA had set up the fixtures to give United a hard start and nothing was said.  I doubt AVB will catch heat for that.  It's nothing Mourinho wouldn't say anyway.  Managers are paid to have double standards.

I thought AVB would share Jose's sentiment on focusing on fixing diving instead of giving this kind of bullsh*t any more attention that it deserves. I'm pretty sure Verthongen himself didn't think anything of it. If he was asked were you shaken and deeply disturbed of the incident he'd ask you "what incident?". They are giving same kind of bans for racism and injuring tackles. f**king joke to even look into that. Grow balls AVB and FA.

I actually think he has a point. Yes, Torres not getting the ban was good news for us, in theory, however I don't believe Torres should have completely got off with it. Let's get it right, had it been the other way around and Vertonghen had done that to Torres, and got off with it, we'd be fuming, wouldn't we?

The FA are saying they can't do anything, but the video footage is there of Torres clawing Vertonghen's face with clear malice, so you can't really blame Spurs for feeling aggrieved. I can't stand them, but you have to look at it from their view.

The FA are now basically saying that it's okay for players to take chunks out of each other's faces. Cos it's not like they can take action against that behaviour at any point now without looking like utter c**ts.

It was a red card offence, no argument, but let's get this right, if a Chelsea player had gone up to a Tottenham player in the manner Vertonghen did with Torres, you can bet your bottom dollar the media would blame the Chelsea player, and you can bet Graham Poll wouldn't omit that little detail from his musings, rather he'd say the Chelsea player got what he deserved.

It looks like Torres will miss the Norwich and Cardiff games, and possibly Schalke in the CL.

He was going to miss the Norwich game anyway, due to suspension.

His next league game back will be City, all being well.

Hopefully Eto'o has given Jose something to think about by then.
