Just out of curiosity, who has said hes "back"?

Saw a newspaper headline about it earlier. Telegraph possibly. Plus I have no doubts some people here would have said it in the various pages I haven't read since last night.

If that was Falcao you'd be saying "Great run in the first place, deserved his luck and showed good composure" and for the second "It was a great poachers goal"

I know what you mean. It's the same with me and Tiger Woods. He gets a hole-in-one, and everyone says, "Great player". I get a hole-in-one and everyone calls it a fluke. Ridiculous.

Nobody said it pal.

Yeah if anyone says he is back after two goals against the Nords in a match where he had 10 shots towards goal a feat he usually manages in 5 league games is deluding themselves. He still managed to get dispossessed 9 times which in-itself is quite a feat against a make shift defense which failed to feature a recognized central defender after the 9th minute injury to Runje. I mean you cannot take this win without a pinch of salt, I doubt Hazard will be able to beat the whole Sunderland defense and lay off a pass like he did against the Nords, I don't envision Nando having more than 3 shots against Sunderland.

Maybe I will be wrong but I still feel there is not enough evidence to expect that Torres's goal drought in the league will end against Sunderland.

There was never going to be enough evidence in that game last night. He could of scored 6 and people would still doubt he could do it saturday simply because of the team we were up against last night. All we can do is hope the goals give him a confidence boost and he can start to hit some form.

A top centre forward would have scored 3 or 4 goals last night.

Or they maye have had an off night and got 1.

There is no real way of knowing what any other striker may or may not have done lat night in reality.....

Or they maye have had an off night, AGAIN, and got 2.

Thanks Captain obvious. I hope you make similar boring statements whenever anyone makes a statement like mine. I'll say this more generally then, A top centre forward (playing for us) would have scored double what Torres scored in the CL for us this year.

I personally think it is a good thing that we have a striker who can have an off night yet still score 2 goals.......

Last night was obviously good on its face, for the player, but will not help us in the long term. Him scoring a couple of goals like that might produce another mini run of form, like a couple more in the league the next few weeks, and then a hattrick against Leeds or something, but its wont be indicative of anything changing long term.

Just like the managerial situation. Benitez got to claim a big win last night. A big win that meant nothing. All it did was give him a better record and, im sure, cloud the judgement of people in charge at the club. It signifies nothing in terms of his long term viability to run the club.

The reason I am rooting for Torres to do well now is 1. it helps the team (though even that is now compromised because helping the team also means helping Benitez) and 2. upping resale value. If he can have a mini renaissance between now and January 31st, we might find a buyer that could take him off our hands. If we cant do it soon, then Torres is going the way of Sheva/Veron and we are never getting rid of him.

Jesus.

Look he score twice against them, he did well and looked far mire dangerous than he has since the Newcastle game BUT no one is saying he's going to go on a run now.

It's good for us and him he got a brace which can only help us for the next game if Danny is still out.

People want to be offended easily on here and wether he has a stormer or a stinker he is still getting pelters so that itself tells us his time is up.

Blimey! Your a bit paranoid aren't you? No one has said he is back other than 1 poster who was obviously being sarcastic.

Hasnt he just?... Zeta seems to often have a complex / agenda about all things Torres....

Or that same top striker playing for us might have had an off night and scored 1.....

When you make sweeping generilzations about something which could never be proved, a comment/retort  like McLovins is quite justifed (and not something i found in any way boring!)

Torres is not back. Torres will never be "back." BUT, Torres has unfortunately with that performance pulled on Roman's heartstrings enough to make sure Torres stays past January...Everyone says Roman is the puppet master, but in reality we all know it is Torres.

On a positive side his movement was a million times better: He made runs, had crisp passes in the final third and had no problem shooting the ball for once. Now we just need him to be that confident when we are playing the likes of city or united...

Captain obvious? Wow, what a put down, you must have been really pleased with that one.

You seem to have missed the glaringly obvious point I was trying to make...

There was actually no need to get so defensive just because I replied to you, my point was just that it is very difficult to say what another striker may or may not have done in a one off game. Torres himself could and should have scored more last night perhaps but there are far too many variables to just declare that any 'top' striker would have scored 3 or 4, in my opinion. I actually thought that regardless of the opposition he had a decent game.

Your original post was talking about last nights game, not the CL in general this season.

When George Clooney pulls a bird, everyone says, "Good ol George, at it again". When I pull a bird, everyone says, "How much did you have to pay her?".

Seriously. I'm getting sick of this.

Are you telling us you bear a strong resemblance to George Clooney?  H'mmmm....interesting.... :blush2:

He had a good game but until he scores at least once per game, plays well and scores from a distance, i'm not going to think he could ever be the Torres he was.

Idont think there is any striker in the world who scores 1 per game so you may aswel give up on that just now.

Absolutley agree that the opposition made it easy for all our attackers to look good last night.

Torres who has been poor recenty scored two, and should have been awarded a penalty, and could have got another goal or two.

Hazard who has been poor recently and stopped running at players suddenly found a lot of fee space to exploit and had a great game.

Mata who has not been poor recently continued to look world class.

I dont think anybody is going to give any long term judgement on any of our players on last nights performance alone, however in the relation to the player this thread is aimed at, i only hope it is a start and a platform to build on.

I hope the same for Hazard, Luiz and Moses who all looked good last night.

Should we try and sell him in January? I surely can't be the only one to get frustrated whenever i watch him. Too me it was a waste of 50m. He is a shadow of the old Torres and in my opinion will never get back to the great heights he reached in the past. Let's put it this way, the only reason most of us feel Rafa is here is to try and get the best out of Torres so what happens when he doesn't? He gets sacked and we revert back to stage 1 with an unconfident mis-firing Torres. Does it not just make sense to cut our losses here and finally get rid of him? It would pave way for someone else to come in with the likes of Falcao, Cavani etc.. Yes he got 2 goals on Wednesday night but simply put he was up against a make-shift defence with a horrible record in Europe. I personally believe there is no point keeping him, i've tried to be patient in the past but now with our attacking talent and all the flair we have he still struggles. Any team challenging for titles need good strikers, Man city with Aguero and tevez etc plus Manchester United with Van persie and Hernandez etc. We just don't have it, and until we get a consistent goal-scorer(s) in, we can kiss good bye to any title hopes we have..
