Last season he was fantastic at the back, this season not so much.

 

I feel he is getting a lot of unfair criticism though, he's not responsible for every goal. Sterling goal had many factors in it and I didn't see the game today but I heard it was mostly down to the midfield why Bradford won.

he's in poor form, but class is permanent and i think he needs backing to keep playing and build up some confidence. certainly hope the fans dont turn on him after a poor season, given what he has done over the last few years

He is in bad form at the moment but i still like Cahill.I think i posted on here before that he is a very good CB but not world class and i stand by that. The problem is there is a real lack of world class CB around at the moment to buy, i mean if Vincent Kompany is one of the top CB in the world you know there is a lack of good defenders.

I'd take Varane in a shot too generally think he could be world class. I think we do want him just don't think Madrid would sell him unless he really wanted to leave. Him and Zouma could develop into a great partnership for us and France, both so young.

This guy is just not suited to highline football at all imo. I mean people are saying he's out of form and sh*t, but the thing is his problem isn't form it is HIGH line football which he isn't clearly suited to play and we are playing highline football this season mostly and he's being exposed to it. Last season he was very good because we were playing to his strength and where he was comfortable I mean back line, sitting deep football.

 

And when we're not sitting deep, he's struggling and mind you he's been struggling since a lot of time this season. So it can't be that he's in bad form right now.

 

I mean seriously this guy doesn't even make tackles just simply backs off. This is ridiculous.

 

We really need a top drawer CB this summer. I'm still gutted for the fact we didn't tried to bring Mehdi Benatia when he was available in the summer for just 24million Euros.

didnt people say the same thing about JT when AVB tried playing a high line? i remember him getting a lot of criticism after the arsenal 5-3 game for struggling with the high line.

Thank you Jack, they could make a vid like that about Terry, all our defenders have made mistakes this season, Jose will be addressing that also. So I'm not worrying about next week, because I think we will be organized.

Some people put him in the same class as Nemanja Vidic, it's shameful.

I was sorry to see him lose his marker in such poor fashion after such a strong first half. You can see how angry he was at himself by his reaction to the goal too. Considering how brilliant Zouma has been, it really does seem like Cahill is on the ropes now.

Cahill is now fighting for his future with us.

 

Zouma has looked the business every chance he has gotten and I would not be surprised to see him take Cahill's place in the return game at the Bridge.

Cahill is still getting the nod for away games, due to his experience I think.

I love Cahill's attitude but he's out of his depth, and I'm one of those who has always felt it.

Can't help but feel Cahill is getting singled out unfairly.

 

I thought he did well, first half him and JT were fairly solid despite both losing out on headers to Ibra numerous times. Positioned himself well to prevent a good pass from Van Der Weil finding Ibra in the box, could have been a goal down in the first 30 mins. Second half, he stood his ground against Ibra and forced him a bit wider than he would have liked which made him miss the target when he took the shot and he did well on the Cavani chance in the 80' min by sliding in and putting him off. 

 

Yes, he could have done better for the goal we conceded but so could everyone else. It was just poor defending all around (Ramires taking a leisurely stroll towards the person crossing was a joke), no one took responsibility for anything and it looked like a serious lack of communication with Matic leaving Cavani free after following him all the way back and Cahill and Terry peeling off towards the near and back post. 

 

Wasn't a fantastic Cahill performance like we have seen in the past but it wasn't anywhere as bad as people are making out. 

I thought he could have done better for the goal, and I also thought he let ibrahimovic go past him too easily for the chance that was cleared off the line.

Not sure if zouma would have done better though, it was a tough night for the defense.

Starting to think he's had his day, just don't feel confident in him like I used to.

Maybe time to sell him? Not in a 'he's sh*t, get rid' way, but FFP fodder like Mata and Luiz were.

The fact is we'll need to balance the books all the time we are only getting 41k a week at the Bridge, I think Cahill is a likely candidate to leave to help fund a big purchase....probably a centre back too.

Dare I say it, at the moment his defensive performances are almost David Luiz-esque... You know a mistake is going to happen but you just prey we get away with it and it doesn't lead to a goal.
