He's still technically club captain for Chelsea. If the options were to move to relegation threatened Monaco and Fulham or sitting on the bench for Juventus I can't say I think any of those options are particularly appealing. He's been a great servant to the club and has remained loyal to the end, even when not playing.... Perhaps a few of the other first team squad could take a leaf out of his book when it comes to professionalism.
February 1, 20197 yr Makes you wonder what he plans after this season, coaching, punditry......................

If you want to show professionalism look at Ashley cole.

As i understand he was offered a place at Fulham, Monaco and Juventus which he turned down preferring to sit out the rest of his contract at £130,000 / week. I quoted Ashley Cole as an example ex Chelsea player who at 34 left us went on to play at Roma, La Galaxy and at 38 is now playing at Derby for £15,000/ week. Just my observation on it in comparison between the two. And probably totally wrong.

So he would have to move clubs twice in 6 months if he wants to continue playing top flight football. Juventus are only going to use him as a reserve seeing as they have Bonucci, Chiellini and Rugani already so he'd just be swapping one bench for another. Ashley Cole left Chelsea when his contract expired, which is exactly what Cahill is planning to do. He's now playing lower league football at 38 on lower wages after being released by LA Galaxy as he was deemed surplus to requirements. There's every chance that five years down the line when Cahill too is 38 he'll move to a lower league team but for now I'm not sure I see any comparison.

Ok what i'm trying to say is that he won't get any playing time, as Sarri has said he doesn't fit into his plan. So as i see it its not about playing. But hey ho.
February 14, 20197 yr ...... if we win the Europa League this year and Cahill is in the European squad, he'll become Chelsea's most decorated player ever when it comes to European competitions, no? Edited February 14, 20197 yr by Barry Bridges

February 16, 20197 yr Sad end for a club legend. Cahill has been an exemplary player for us a model professional on and off the pitch. Can’t say I agree with freezing out the club captain at all. Poor show from Sarri.
February 16, 20197 yr It's a tricky one, if he was told he was unlikely to play this season you think he would have gone on loan and if it was Fulham surely he would not even have to move. Perhaps he hoped through chance alone like the 6-0 battering his opportunity would come and possibly even the chance of more silverware. Now that opportunity has moved on perhaps explains this timing. Not sure we will know though the press articles are disappointing.

It is disappointing but I would rather any minutes Cahill gets goes to Ampadu. He should have gone in January.
February 16, 20197 yr You have to take articles like that with a huge pinch of salt. Claims such as “Sarri has barely spoken to Cahill” since taking over are highly questionable but sound believable, and that’s more than enough for people to completely buy into them, especially when many of these people are desperate for absolutely anything to justify their entrenched anti-Sarri viewpoints. That’s all that’s required from somebody like Mat Law, doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, he can say anything and as long as it sounds believable people will lap it up and he will continue to get paid. The article tries to make out that Sarri is disrespectful towards Cahil. We know for a fact that Cahil has hardly played but that’s because there are better choices in his position now. We also know that Cahil has still been allowed to retain the captaincy despite not playing, which seems pretty respectful to me.
February 16, 20197 yr Cahill will come in for the Europa final when Rudiger, Christensen and Ampadu are all injured, form that European Cup winning partnership with David Luiz one more time and leave an absolute legend. Quote me when I get it right
February 16, 20197 yr Moses got a move to Turkey because he wanted to play. If he wanted to keep collecting paycheque, he could have easily stayed put. The same applies to Drinkwater and Cahill. I'm pretty sure, if playing regularly, or at all, was at the top of their list of priorities, they'd be out on loan now. It doesn't make financial sense for the club to keep paying the players the manager doesn't use so I'm sure no one is standing in Cahill's way. It's all about money in the end, he probably doesn't want to take a pay cut, which is fine by me, but I don't see how that situation is in any way disrespectful to our former captain.

February 17, 20197 yr We’re the ones who gave him a contract until the summer of 2019. He’s fully entitled to sit and see it out on the money he’s on. Would anyone on this board move jobs where they’re asked to do the bare minimum (I.e. train etc.) for a significantly lower paid job? I highly doubt it. I actually agree more with FC, I think it’s more about where he sees his long term future. Guys a legend. He deserves total respect for all he’s done for us.

He is more than entitled to stay and pick up his pay cheque until his contract runs out, but has he really been treated that badly? He could've left in January, if he felt like a 'ghost'. He is still involved with first team training, but sarri doesn't fancy him. It's not like hes been given the malouda treatment. I'm sure he has been at team meetings when things like mentality and motivation have been discussed, and I'm sure sarri's door is open if he wants to have input. It's just a complete non story for me, and if there is any truth to it, surely Cahill would've forced a move in January.
February 17, 20197 yr Cahill just doesn't fit this system. He has never been good with the ball at his feet, and when pressed/under pressure he isn't calm and it leads to mistakes. This Is why Luiz and Rudiger/Christensen are superior for the system and playing out from the back when pressed. I do think there should have been more planning from the club to identify Cahill as a weak link to Sarri's defence and informed Cahill his future is far from certain. Initially at the start of the season Sarri gave him a chance, but it was apparent not long after that Cahill wasn't suited to the system. Sarri even mentioned (if I remember right) that he respected Cahill as one of the older guard players. It just hasn't worked out because Cahill doesn't have the attributes necessary for our defence. As has been mentioned though, Cahill has had the opportunity to move to another club and get chances but has declined. Many of our second string players know where their bread is buttered that's why. The board should not hand these aging players longer contracts, which is a problem when trying to get rid further down the line. Edited February 17, 20197 yr by enigma

February 17, 20197 yr A loyal player, remember when he went through a period of scoring some pretty dam good goals, sometimes when he had made a mistake in defence you could see him trying to make up for it up the other end for dead balls.
