All getting a little hung up here in was it or was it not a sending off and in relation to any appeal what would be the grounds

On the FA site it is shown as a 3 match ban. I am pretty sure that the Community shield will not count in the 3 games. If you may well recall  in 2012 Ivan was sent off at Villa Park  in the Community Shield but the game did not count as a competitive fixture so no ban followed.

Next when we appealed the Matic incident we did not appeal the card itself. You can only appeal if you say the ref has judged the incident incorrectly which he clearly didnt so the only route the club can take, and probably will, is to appeal the 3 game ban on the basis it is excessive based on the incident

The Matic case was initially a 3 game ban but on appeal and in view of the circumstances the ban was reduced to two games. I think there is a strong argument that a 3 game ban for Cesc is excessive on the basis that if the ball was in play there almost certainly wouldn't have been an offence whereas a stamp for instance is always violent conduct be play continuing or not

Definitely a red card for me, not the most dangerous things to do, but like carjacker said, it could have maybe broke a nose.

You can't kick the ball at the ref, into crowds of players, players on the floor, or at the fans aswell.

3 game ban is harsh, but it was an incredibly stupid thing to do.

Anyone remember when Stevie Me booted the ball at Bosingwa from a very short distance? Didn't even get a yellow...

Or Ashley Williams booting the ball with force into Van Persie's head from about 2 yards away!

Somebody sensible been signed up by the FA to deal with discipline? Maybe next year we can get some efficient referees too, this was always a very harsh red for violent conduct even if Graeme Poll says so, ungentlemanly  conduct at worst and should have been a yellow. Cesc will learn a lesson from this, it was stupid but so was the over zealous referee who many times has shown himself out of his depth at this level.

By the letter of the law, it was a red but in the context of that game with nothing to play for, I'm convinced that a good ref would have taken it all into account and just given a yellow.

Unfortunately, Mike Jones is not a good ref and had already completely lost control of the game.

A surprisingly sensible decision by the FA, to be fair.

That was so stupid of Cesc kicking ball in the dorection of referee but red card for that is a little too rough.

Yellow yeah but not red.

I'm glad we will miss only one match. Next season he will be ready to play.

Yes, he did, but so did Matic.

Sorry, completely missed this at the time and it's a fine point. The distinction may be the force with which Matic pushed the Barnes. I'm not defending it but maybe if Cesc had made more of it then Ferguson would've been off.

Good news! Now we can really look back at this match and laugh in the future.

Exactly. Amazing accuracy from Cesc.

Think it counted as a key pass...he's that good.
