Agree on the legend thing though. Not to be thrown around lightly. A harsh critic would rule out Joey based on him parroting lines about Anfield on European nights when he joined them It's nauseating, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they were told to mention it in their first interviews. Has a new Liverpool signing ever not mentioned their world famous karaoke signing support?! I think it says a lot that he moved there, and is still adored by the majority of Chelsea supporters.

He was, he has since admitted he was told to say it, such a weird cult them f**kers are.

January 13, 20206 yr I hated Joe Cole for those comments at the time, I was happy he came out and told the truth, really doesn't surprise me with that cult.

Even someone like Kalou has 60 goals in 254 games, pretty much playing in the same position as a wide forward. Not sure too many would have Kalou in the legend category ! You can't judge players by by goals when they are not strikers. Joey Cole had so much more to his game than goals, even though he did score some great ones and some crucial ones. He was a play-maker and creator and was a lot more consistent than Willian has even been able to be. I know legend status should only be reserved for the chosen few - JT, Lamps, Cech and Drogba in recent era. For me, Joey was a legend but he's more of a fans favourite / cult hero. It helped that he was a likeable English lad but it's also down to his love of the game and love of Chelsea (he was a Chelsea supporter as a kid). As I said in another thread, my all-time favourite players are those who are worth the entrance fee alone. The players that can produce things others aren't capable of and that's why for me, Joey is in there with Wee Pat, Zola, Eidur and Hazard as the one's I'll look back on who produced those moments of magic on a fairly regular basis. Showing your age Nibs, wee Pat!, A magician on sh*te pitches with defenders going through the back of you, and a real cult hero as well, an idol for us lot of a certain 80's vintage

I agree with this we can be quite harsh on our wide players not finishing and forgetting they are not strikers. The only difference I have seen is with players like Ronaldo or Henry that move from the wing to play in the centre.

Loved watching him dribble, beat his man, beat another man, then double back and beat them again! Hated it when Hollins took over from John Neal and left Nevin and Micky Hazard on the bench. Our two best players wasted. The best part of going to The Bridge under Hollins was watching Pat do his stuff in the pre-match warm up. When Hazard (Eden - not Micky!) left last season I was gutted and it reminded me so much of how I felt when Nevin left to join Everton. Gone, but never forgotten............... You're right - fair enough. All I was trying to get over was that Joey might have had x number of goals and x number of direct assists but it was often what he would do in the build up, around the centre circle, that made him the magic little player he was, so just posting 281 appearances and 40 goals goes nowhere near in summing up his particular talent!

I'd have him over Willian all day long LOL. Agree with you about the "special" players that do magical things on the pitch that make it worthwhile watching ... I'd add Robben to your list of wingers in that regard.
January 13, 20206 yr Barca supposedly wanted Willian real bad. Now they can talk to him about signing for free next season as can any european club. I wonder why none of them have agreed terms with his agent yet?
January 14, 20206 yr Kalou was one of the most frustrating players ever, but he always used to come up with a goal out of nowhere, he had that in his locker.

Because I think Willian is well settled and doesn’t want to leave London.. owns a restaurant .. is probably our best attacking player this season after TA.. i think a deal maybe fairly close .. and he himself said he will not speak to any club before his Chelsea future is resolved.. My sense he will give us a couple of years before retiring at a west ham or a Crystal Palace.

Great shout on Eidur. Always underrated in my view. Was supposed to be second or third fiddle to Jimmy, Crespo, Mutu, Kezman and Drogba but always seemed to get picked and make a massive contribution. It didn't matter whether he was leading the line himself, playing in a two or playing behind someone. He's exactly the sort of striker we need right now to complement Tammy. Shame there aren't too many around like him these days.
