Petr Cech to Arsenal

Featured Replies

Let's hope RM made a gentlemans agreement with JM that if he forces a transfer he doesn't want, he'll fund a dream transfer of his choosing or get (insert insanely huge amount of ££££ here ) to spend.

Except for the fact that Mourinho is clearly against this move.

Barca - Bravo, Ter Stegen

United - De Gea, Valdes

Bayern - Neuer, Reina

Clubs with ambition need a great 2nd keeper. Understandable that Cech was too good to be a 2nd keeper, but its not like we dont need a great keeper to replace him.

No team has a truly world class second keeper that I can think of. Madrid have Navas and Casillas. Casillas being booed by his own fans because of his many errors. Barcelona have Bravo as the first choice and Ter Stegen as the second choice, this works because Bravo is 32 and Tee Stegen is the younger at 23 so he knows he has time to prove himself. At Chelsea it's the other way around with Cech being the older of the two and firmly second choice he doesn't exactly have a chance of becoming first choice again. So you can't begrudge him moving to another team.

Loyalty is thing of past these days. How can one be called a legend when he forces his move away to join our fiercest rivals. I'm not going to disrespect him or anything but he doesn't seems to be a legend to me.

I totally agree. Lots of people - including Petr Cech - don't understand that loyalty and honour are extremely important virtues. Why do so few people in the modern world respect morals?  It's highly immoral for Petr to turn his back on Chelsea FC and choose to join Arsenal.

Petr Cech, as much as he was a great goalkeeper for Chelsea, isn't a man of honour. He should have a bond with CFC that makes him fully aware that going to Arsenal would be a severe act of betrayal. Instead, he's not happy to be the 2nd choice goalkeeper, so in an act of spite, he joins Arsenal. It's disgusting.

People will make excuses for Petr, but they're all airy-fairy and fail to appreciate the gravity of the situation. There aren't any credible excuses to be made for Petr. He was at a huge, succesful club, and adored by the fans. He was earning good money and was an important, much loved part of the Chelsea family.  Him choosing to go against Mourinho's wishes and betray Chelsea FC, is something no Chelsea fan should forgive.

That's a bit dramatic.

Indeed. Immoral?!? Whilst loyalty may be considered a virtue depending upon the circumstances, equally, the absence of same does not in any way deem immorality.

Seeing your favourite players playing for your rivals who have fans that have booed and shouted abuse at them for years is not great to see. I hated seeing Lampard play for City and i will hate seeing Cech play for Arsenal. It will probably be worse with Cech because 1, it's Arsenal and 2, he will be a key player for them.

I think with how often we are seeing key players / club legends / fan favourites leave us for direct rivals in the last few years is starting to annoy some Chelsea fans and i can see why really.

In the last 4 seasons we sold Sturridge, a young English striker ( the best striker we had at the club at the time ) to Liverpool. Then Mata, a fan favourite, was sold to Man United. Then we have Lampard leaving and joining the team we would be competing against for the league title, Man City. And now it's Cech's turn to join a rival.

I can sympathies with any fan that is annoyed by this transfer. No other club would do this so i don't see why we should keep doing it. I'm even a little annoyed at Cech too, i'll admit that. To want to play for a team we all massively dislike is a bit of a kick in the teeth really. I'll never hate Cech but seeing one of your favourites joining a rival isn't nice to see no matter what the circumstances.

I suppose we have no choice really but to just accept it and move on really. There is no point bitching and moaning about, it will get us nowhere, trust me, i've been there

War zone of a thread this has turned in to.

Thanks for the memorys big Pete.

Thus may be the end of Jose run two. Enjoy him while he is still here guys and especially gem, beerqueen and moi

I'm not particularly fond of him! But nevertheless his record is second to none. I don't think it'll be the end of Mourinho, he knew what he was coming back too, he's not stupid or naive.

This forum has really gone to sh*t recently. Why can't bobbywood and blue daze ignore each other and just discuss the topic. Or, better still, f**k off to the all purpose rant thread and carry your pillow fight on over there.

I have nothing Against either of you its just the constant bickering that's ruining this thread and several others for people like me who actually want to read genuine fan opinion.

Please.

I apologise for my part, but you've got this guy who seems to constantly slate the club over their deals when he's got no connection to it. I put the guy on ignore and he still makes snidey comments with his mate towards me. I've tried to sort it out in PMs but the guy has issues. I should be there bigger man though.

For f**ks sake.... Is this for real?

I honestly don't know sometimes. You think you know what to expect from your club's supporters, then someone says something like this.

It makes me think maybe I'm wrong. Maybe our support has changed so much in the last decade that maybe you're not some lone voice. Maybe I'm insulated from views like yours and similar ones in this thread.

Maybe slagging the club and calling legends immoral for moving clubs is what supporting your club is all about nowadays. Maybe that's the price of success.

Blimey, I expected this thread to be a bit spicy but didn't expect a full on civil war.

Blue Daze banned as well, it's all going on.

Sad to see the state of some Chelsea both on these boards and on Twitter. Its worse on Twitter to be fair.

May take....

Like with Lampard, I am very sad to see a Chelsea legend move to a rival- there is no getting around that.... It's painful and when we play Arsenal it will be uncomfortable, just like it was with Lamps when we played City.

But all perspective should not go out the window. We, as Chelsea fans, have been utterly blessed on the whole when it comes to transfers in recent times, I can barely think of one player in the last 10 years who we sold who we (as a club) who we actually wanted to stay. Robben perhaps. My point is that clubs like Arsenal have had their best players swiped from them time and time again over the last decade, captains, top scorers, legends, they have lost them all in their prime and have had to deal with it every time. We, to be honest, haven't.

So yes, this may hurt a bit for a couple of years but lets look at the bigger picture- we (the club) are in the luxurious position of being able to do this as a result of having Courtois, a keeper who is 10 years younger than Cech and rated as one of the finest goalkeepers in the world already. We won the league last year and there is every reason to believe we will be well equipped to do so again next year.

Basically, lets not start behaving like tits.

Notwithstanding the above, the main gripe obviously though, is "why Arsenal"

I can't say I would sanction his move to Arsenal if I was the boss, as much as I have painted a positive picture above. Don't need to state the obvious as to why.

If a 'gentlemans agreement' was made last year then, to be honest, more fool us for backing ourselves into a corner when we really didn't need to.

That does not mean however that I wouldn't have a price if Arsenal came knocking, it would just be well, well above what Arsenal would deem a fair price. £20M give or take a few million. At least then you could make a case for us getting a good deal financially.

My main issue with the deal is that we appear to be acting is if we hold none of the cards which couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, we actually hold all the cards as of this moment in time.

If we have indeed got ourselves into this situation of feeling obliged to sell to Arsenal due to this agreement with cech himself then I just don't see why we can't play hardball. If we want a player in return then insist on it. If we want £18M, insist on it. I have a feeling Arsenal would end up forking out. Would they see the deal collapse over a few million? Where would they go to find another suitor as good as Cech with their 11 million? There is also no pressure on us to get this done... in fact, it would be perfect if this one went through on deadline day... so I would play it cool, name the price and tell them to take it or leave it. We could always fold on deadline day and take less if we really wanted to- why make it easy for them?

You won't see me slating Cech though. Like with Lampard, I am disappointed he has decided to join a rival. I wish he had made a different choice. But 11 years of service combined with the nature/context of the situation dictates that, whilst we as fans may not like it, we just have to accept it.

Bloody hell, as mclovin83 has mentioned, didn't expect it to kick off so much on here! Blue Daze...can't say I'll miss him.

Cech is a legend, it's thanks to him that we've had such a successful 10+ years of success. And we certainly wouldn't have won the CL with a different keeper in goal during those penalties!

I wish him the best. He is settled in London with his family and still craves CL football. Arsenal are a good fit for him, makes sense for him to go there. Rivalry is a fan thing, footballers don't take things as personally as us manic fans do, so I doubt he sees his move to North London as a "betrayal".

He won't win any trophies at Arsenal though. And I think he knows that.

All the best Petr!

It will be strange come the Charity Shield (I still call it that!).

I suppose our strikers are used to shooting into Cech in training so will know the 'sweet spots' and such so there is that!

Hope we are close to bringing some players in ourselves to get the feel good factor back after a great season.

He's not an idiot, he's not ignorant, he clearly knows the importance of rivalries in football and knows that Chelsea and Arsenal hate each other. Therefore in choosing to go to Arsenal, when presumably there were other equally lucrative offers outside of London, it's essentially a big f**k you to the people who have supported him for the last decade.

It's even worse than Lamps because at least he was past it.

The moment you knew the night was ours!

I find it impossible to say a negative thing about the big guy.

Legend IMO

More bothered we're bringing in another declining striker loan or not.

Love the reactions of Didier and Mata.

Why has blue Daze been banned? Hopefully it will stop the endless arguing. Think he spoke sense at times, but he would rarely back down in an argument, to the it became predictable.

Who is our back up keeper as it stands (when Cech leaves)?

Right now it would be Blackman but you bet we'll be in the market for a decent replacement if Cech does go.

Failing that I'm sure Hilario won't mind coming out of retirement seeing as he is somehow still hanging around the club.
