October 18, 201510 yr Without a doubt a fan favourite, starts every game and plays very well no matter what position he plays. Seems quite commanding at the back and in my opinion has been our best defender in the last two and a half seasons. He's in my top three favourite players at the club along with Diego and JT who are probably also the most passionate about Chelsea Football Club and in my opinion, he has the right tempremant to be captain for the next 10 years. You don't replace Ashley Cole in your "second position" if you're not a great player and that's exactly what Azpilicueta is. Best fullback in the league bar none and hopefully will earn a call up in the Spanish national squad for the Euros but we know how political it is with Real/Barca players. What do people think? October 18, 201510 yr An absolute boss. Gives 100 percent to this club. Great work rate and attitude. It's unfortunate that Mourinho chose his captain on who's been here the longest (giving it to Ivan). Azpi certainly deserves it.
October 18, 201510 yr I'd say yes. He deserves to be. He gives everything for the team, always shows good form, fantastic work rate.
October 18, 201510 yr If we had 11 Azpis! Ivanovic would still be at RB Edited October 18, 201510 yr by Zinc
October 18, 201510 yr I hope he dosen't get injured, I would hate to see what happens with Ivanovic as RB and Baba as LB
October 18, 201510 yr Being the club captain is more about personality than playing ability. Azpi has been probably our most consistent performer over the last few seasons and has a tremendous work ethic but is he a big enough character to be captain? We have always had passionate and charismatic players and leaders in the squad, I'm not sure Azpi is that. He would definitely give a good example for other players to follow but I don't think he is a leader of men.Tremendous player though.
October 18, 201510 yr I guess it all depends on what a manager wans from his captain. Does he want an extension of him self on the pitch, some who is totally on his wave length and will carry out his instructions and make sure his team mates do likewise. Personally ive always liked a captain who keeps talking to his team mates, keeps them in line, tells them when they are not doing their job or getting caught out of position, has the ability to read the game from back to front no matter what position he plays in. Commands respect because his effort can not be faulted. Its always a bonus if they are local or have come through the clubs ranks also. Then there is also the school of thought that you just give the captaincy to your best/most popular player. I didn't get it at first when Beckham got the England captaincy and Owen the vice captain. I didn't see either of them as the type of players that would dish out rollockings to other players when needed but I think it had a positive psychological effect with the fans, that the main man was going to win us the game type thing. I would definitely go with a defender as I think that position is best for reading the game. Azpi seems a pretty good shout, he ticks a lot of the boxes. I think any candidate would really need some trial games, how was it transitioned to JT, I really cant remember, it was Desailly before wasn't it, that man was immense.

October 18, 201510 yr He rarely has a bad game and is more often than not one of our top performers. After JT, i would love him to be our next captain. I don't want to pick on Ivanovic, but Azpilicueta's defensive display has been exactly what we have been missing at RB this season. He was closing down players and making sure nobody got through. For the first time this season the opposition didn't want to attack our right hand side, they realise how hard it is to get by Azpilicueta.

He would definitely give a good example for other players to follow but I don't think he is a leader of men. Tremendous player though. I'm with you on this. Doesn't seem a natural leader of men. I'd say the only ones suitable in the current setup are Ivan, Cahill and maybe Fabregas and I'm sure Fabregas will never be captain. I think this is actually part of the larger problem of our form this season. A lack of on-pitch leadership without J.T. A while back the likes of Lampard, Drogba, Cech, JT, Ivanovic - to name a few - just knew what to do and how to carry us home.
October 19, 201510 yr Azpilicueta is one of most passionate players. Mourinho has even said he's a very emotional player. I wasn't trying to say he lacks passion he gives everything on the field and for the team, he just seems a little quite as a personality, and I'm not sure he would invoke passion in others despite being a great role model for others to follow.
October 19, 201510 yr How many fullbacks have been club captain at a club our size? Neville is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

October 19, 201510 yr Philip Lahm. Also not your typical 'shouty' captain perhaps, although I don't watch enough bayern to know that for sure.
