Guus Hiddink - New (old) Chelsea-manager

Featured Replies

That's a bit shortsighted.. hiddink done nothing worthy of your acknowledgement in term of managerial oriented decision.. He still adopts the pragmatic style, not really giving youth enough chances but this man is not without positives of course.. He's better than jose in certain part of the game but jose is still our best manager overall so far and ironically he's also our worst manager under roman era..

But he's not here, rightly or wrongly, and Guus is

Did anyone notice that Guus changed his jacket at half-time?

The Beeb made some deal of out, confusing to viewers or some other nonsense.

I still question Guus at times, like his team selection against United or how defensively we played Watford away. Sometimes it seems that pragmatism is more out of fear.

He's good at steadying the ship but I wouldn't want him to be our full time manager. Bringing on matic and Oscar today was a real head scratcher, we were 4-1 up at that point, why not give RLC and Miazga a run out?

maybe he wanted to keep oscar and matic happy?

Guus has done a good job and has certainly turned things around for the better ...

I like his calming influence over the whole club.

However, as above his substitutions need to be much more adventurous, otherwise he will eventually succumbe to Jose's main failure by running the exact same players into the ground. Today, we played City's youth team. Our youth players are certainly their equal and there was no excuse not to bring RLC on and perhaps Miazga too.

Guus is a very good manager where as some of you on this thread are very poor judges imo.

Too right.

Sure some of the results and performances have been disappointing and I wish he would be a bit more positive with some of his substitutions but when you look at how bad we were under the last few months of Mourinho compared to now, I think everyone has to admit he has done a very decent job. If it had been the other way round and it had been Jose who came in in December and put the same run together, everyone would be hailing The Special One!!

i hope he looks at how much more width we use with natural wing backs and keeps it that way when terry comes back, instead of sticking ivan the terrible back at rb again. i actually wouldn't mind ivan next to terry, but please no more ivanovic at rb plz.

I think he's doing a decent job but you have to bear in mind that his remit probably doesn't extend much beyond 'steady the ship'. I don't think he's once looked to push us, to take a risk or to really go out of our comfort zone which is fine if you're a caretaker looking to get your crew to the safe shores of May without incident.

Jose didn't have that benefit. Jose was still 'the man' looking to build something for the future. Hiddink is doing well amidst modest expectations and it's not even like he's looking to impress his next employer because he's not going to have one in all likelihood.

He's doing the anti-Murtaugh. He's a few days away from retirement and rather than going after the bad guy hiding behind diplomatic immunity, he's doing paperwork at his desk. There's no last shootout for this grizzled gunslinger. He just wants to watch Bargain Hunt and enjoy an afternoon nap. It's predictable, it doesn't create headlines and it doesn't really achieve anything except peace and quiet. The guy's earned a big final paycheque and he'll tick all the boxes he needs to.

The real job is the next guy's problem.

People forget that Guus inherited a team that was 1 point above relegation, you can't expect him to preform miracles. Considering the situation he inherited, he has done a good job.

It's not like taking over Aston Villa is it. It didn't need Miracles to get Chelsea up the table. Jose lost the dressing room and they wasn't playing for him.

You assume.

Our defence has been shocking this season, Jose's defensive tactics only work with a good defence. Guus has allowed the players to attack more, reducing the pressure on the poor defence.

It's pretty obvious with players like Fabregas, Costa and Oscar. Guus hasn't done anything special. Picks the same team, doesn't make subs to influence games and is the perfect yes man. As an interim manager his perfect, long term no way.

Maybe he's not a perfect long term manager but I think if he managed this team since the beginning of the season, we would be probably in the top 5. So far he's doing pretty good job.

Maybe, but Chelsea are obviously a top 4 team but what has happened no one could of predicted. Having a different manager at the beginning of the season would of had a different effect on the players, you could get Rogers in and they would probably be in the top 5. Different manager brings new ideas, let's other players have a chance so it's like starting from new.

But Hiddink wasn't manager at the beginning of the season because it's clear his not a long term manager. Hiddink is doing an ok job. Needs to be woken up to even think about a sub and he never inspires me tactically.

"From day one, since Guus has come in, the atmosphere has changed. He has given responsibility to people and expects them to thrive on it and make sure they do it in a way where they feel comfortable. I think that is what the players are showing, now."

"When you come into the training ground, he doesn't get into people's business, he gets on with his own thing and players feel very comfortable and know exactly what to do so when he gets on the training pitch, he doesn't need to speak."

"We all know what he wants and it is the same when we go into a game. We get on the pitch and know exactly what he wants. He doesn't stand up that much to speak, but we know exactly what he wants."

"When he gets upset he tries to clear the air straight away. He speaks to whoever is involved and lets you know what you have done is wrong. This football club is bigger than anyone and he puts the record straight, right away. He does not hold grudges. It is finished and we move on. You can see it with Diego [Costa]. It takes a lot to get Diego in a good mood!"

Bolded are the things I thought Jose was renowned for. Apparently its come down to the players being comfortable.

It's all on Google ......just tap in her name......Marina Gravanoskaia and you will see that she has worked for Roman for many years and he replaced the previous Chelsea CEO Rob Gourlay with her !

It's not rocket science !

Is she fit?

I think people need to be realistic about what they are regarding as a "long term" manager.

History tells us our managers are realistically going to last between 6 months and 3 years (this having happened once in the last 10 years and approximately 10 different Managerial appointments).

Goose will have done 6 odd months by the end of the season. If it has been a successful 6 months with a happy camp and reason to believe we could steadily improve next season then I see absolutely no reason why we wouldn't do everything to keep him. Whether you rate him tactically etc there can be no doubt over the fact he is liked by the players and his general PR has been a complete breath of fresh air after Jose. If he has a trophy to show for his time at the end of the season, for me, it would be a no brainer.

The alternative is appoint (yet another) new guy and we start all over again like a game of roulette.

I can absolutely see the logic in that, but to me it would be yet another sign that the club has no ambition on the pitch. Simeone or Conte would be 'the man'. The club would hopefully back these guys financially and in terms of letting them put their imprint on the club. Hiddink wouldn't be 'the man'. He's never been 'the man' at this club, he's always been the interim guy and if you appoint him for one year (would he sign a contract lasting any longer than this?) then he's not 'the man' - he's a seat-filler.

We need more than that. We need someone to come in and whatever the history of our appointments might say, we need to back that guy to rebuild the squad.

I'm sure the club like him and the atmosphere is probably brilliant, but how does he do when there's actually pressure on him? His remit is probably just to steady the ship and that's exactly what we needed when we sacked a coach. But the job that starts the minute the season finishes is completely different and eventually you're going to have to appoint a new coach that you have long-term aspirations for. Treading water and delaying that for 12 months is not something I could imagine any other business doing if I'm being honest.
