I think Marquinhos is on slightly higher wages but that is it.

He has upped his game since Tuchel came in but it looks like the end of the road. If reports of Havertz and Werner's contracts are to be believed, you can't really blame Rudiger for demanding 12 a year. He has a lot of leverage in the negotiations but I think he can be replaced. I just hope Tuchel is happy with the replacement and this doesn't cause a rift with the board.

It would be in the realm. Vvd, De Ligt, Marquinhos are all up there. 

That's the kind of wages you pay a great defender, in their prime, who also happens to be your club captain. We recently conceded against Burnley because he fell asleep at the back and never pushed up with the line. No way is he worth that money.

He can’t actually be demanding parity with Havertz & Werner because they had more than 2 seasons of proven quality in the Bundesliga, we were competing with other clubs for their services & were already on high wages at their previous clubs. Rudiger is demanding £240k/w; more than twice what he is on currently based on a half-full season body of work since he has been here. VVD is on a newly improved £220k/w for comparison. And like Deino pointed out, you do that & Christensen who is intentionally stalling to see what we pay Rudiger will increase his demands. James & Mount will also will be demanding more than 2x what they each currently earn.

Well, reports suggest Werner and Havertz are on close to 20m Euros a year, so if Rudiger is demanding 12m, it's not really parity and not that unreasonable. It is only a matter of time before the other players demand massive contracts too if the reports are to be believed. Neither Havertz nor Werner has set the world alight since their signing, so it's only normal for other players who are performing arguably better to demand comparable wages. Even if the players themselves don't demand said wages, their agents will.  Rudiger was only really bad during the latter days of Lampard's reign, but has been decent for us otherwise.

No they are not! Our highest earner is Lukaku on £325k/w, Havertz is on about half of that. We gave them those wages because we were competing with the Liverpool’s, Bayern’s & Madrid for their services. 
Rudiger has only ever been decent bar last season. Under Conte, Cahill  & Azpi were better, and Under Sarri, Luiz was the standout defender. I just don’t see how a CL trophy translates into a double your wages contract.

Football wages are quite ridiculous ... it's absurd that a hundred and forty grand A f**kING WEEK isn't enough, and I get quite frustrated how blase everyone is about these telephone number salaries.  How on earth have we arrived in a situation where a footballer earns more in a week than 4 nurses do in a year ... and especially when the Covid-19 pandemic was supposed to be driving home which roles in life are actually important ...

This is why I always get annoyed when I hear stories of players wanting to stay at the club, but then also say they have been forced out due to the club not meeting their contract demands. 100k, 200k, 300k, these numbers will have you, your family and future generations set for life, so I cannot accept any player saying they have been forced out of a club.

I have never been somebody that has been interested in a flashy lifestyle, so maybe I just don't get it, but if I was genuinely happy somewhere, then I couldn't imagine turning down 140k a week to remain there.

And in the case of Mr Rudiger, unless he has been unbelievably bad with money, he must ALREADY be set for life, and probably the next three generations of his family as well. This new contract is merely the icing on an extremely large and highly calorific cake !

While I agree completely with you Scott, I do also wonder if he wants to put as much money back in to poorer communities, like where he grew up, like Drogba did and still does with his foundation.

Also have we heard anywhere that Toni wants to stay? We have heard it out of the Christensen camp, but I do not remember Toni or anyone connected with him saying he does during this contract situation.

The answer is simple really, 40k people aren't reguarly watching them do their job with millions of people doing likewise through a screen. We can argue the morality till we're blue in the face but it's simply a case of supply and demand. Why do you think some celebrities get paid the best part of half a million to go on programmes like I'm a celebrity?

If we want this stopped or pay back at a "normal rate" then the first step would be football fans boycott games/BT/sky which simply isn't going happen.

It all got out of hand with the Sky money ... players from previous generations in my life time were very well compensated for performing in the spotlight without it being as absurd as it is now ... I don't hold it against Rudiger either. He is merely a topical example as his contract situation is ongoing. The players and their agents have done well to exploit a situation where the man on the street was relieved of a big chunk of monthly change by Sky to watch what he already had before, and that money was passed on to the clubs, who inexplicably handed all of it and more straight to all the players and their greedy agents. Genii is well out of the bottle now sadly ... the conversation is all "should he have 140 or 200 a week ?" and the absurdity of even his current 120 is never debated.

Fair points @Argo . Cannot really expect Rudiger to have the same pull to stay as a Mount, James or even Christensen. 

Only been here 4 and a bit years, not a Chelsea fan as a kid.

I hope we are able to keep Rudi at the club, but everything I have seen doesn't pain a rosy picture for Chelsea. Rudi is one of those players, like Diego Costa, that you know has your back and will go to war for the club. Gonna be a tough character to replace but we got guys that are willing to fight for the badge in Reece, Mason and Trevoh to name a few.
