Obviously we will need to improve on our offer to Rudiger but if he wants to stay then hopefully a compromise can be reached. Several different sources report Toni wants a deal to make him the highest paid defender in the PL. The current highest paid defender in the league is Raphael Varane at 340k a week. No way we pay Toni close to that, it would make him our top earner even matching it.
January 13, 20224 yr He's good but he's not 350k/wk good. If he wanted 250k instead, I'd say sign the papers immediately

The Athletic are reporting today he rejected our offer of £140k per week which wouldn't even make him one of the top 10 players at the club, which given his current importance to the team I can understand why he feels he is worth more. From the same article "But before anyone gets too excited, it doesn’t sound like Chelsea are close to matching Rudiger’s demands — a four-year deal worth between £180,000 and £200,000-a-week. Obviously, he will expect a signing-on bonus from his next deal, whoever it is with, too. But reports he is looking for a fee that will mean he effectively gets £400,000-a-week have been dismissed."
January 13, 20224 yr If he wants £200k a week if feels like an absolute no brainer. To replace him we’d have to pay a new guy that plus a massive transfer fee. I get that we generally don’t offer long contracts to people his age but it seems daft not to at 29
January 13, 20224 yr Agree with this, he is totally worth the £200k a week he asks for. We simply need to sign him up to a new contract. Not only we'd miss Rudi the footballer, but his leadership skills are second to none in our squad. If you'd have told me a couple of seasons back that Rudiger (the ticking bomb at that point) will become a vital part of our squad and probably the most influencial voice on the pitch, all this backed up by his faultless performances, I'd have considered it madness that no medication is able to cure. Right now, Rudiger and Thiago Silva bring the same leadership that JT used to bring, Ramos used to bring at Madrid etc.

I forget the rag that said it but Skysports have also had their transfer expert say it.
January 23, 20224 yr Now apparently United are favorites as RR let Toni's brother know they will pay him more than Varane and make him the highest paid defender in the league.

Can't see him ditching us to go to manure. Are UK clubs even allowed to negotiate and offer pre contracts to him at the moment? I thought he was only free to negotiate with foreign clubs?

January 24, 20224 yr We absolutely can not afford to let him go under any circumstances. He has speed, never gets beaten on a one on one, good in the air, and most importantly has that agression that gets the team and crowd going. We absolutely must give him 200k a week, it would cost us 60m to replace him plus whatever wages a 60m player commands. Would be a shocking error to lose him.

I think the problem is the daft thing that clubs see a contract renewal differently from a new signing. If they considered the negotiations as if it was a new player on a free transfer the wages would be agreed easily. That, in effect, is the position with Rudiger. I wouldn't just be signing him on again. I'd be making him captain and also asking him to rock up on YouTube with a video of him sh*tting on a Spurs top. I reckon he is up for that.
February 4, 20224 yr Rejected 200k per week. Not sure what planet some of these footballers are on, people around the world are struggling post-pandemic but as always the rich come out better off from it.

February 4, 20224 yr Let him go. It's been going on too long for me, lets see if he can find a good move. Silva, Chalobah, Sar maybe Kounde, James can also play as a CB. There are options, don't like this feeling of being held to ransom.
February 4, 20224 yr Toni has an offer worth 400k a week from PSG and also a better offer from Real that us. This is the trend we are seeing, players know they can get better deals running down their contracts and netting really high signing on fees too. I would not be surprised at all if Jorgi and Kante do the same in a year. Every chance Paris slaps 500k a week offer to Kante. Edited February 4, 20224 yr by axman2526

February 4, 20224 yr That is just pure incompetence from Granovskaia if thats true. Finally giving in to the demands Rudiger would have signed on half a year ago, AFTER he's been allowed to talk to clubs on the continent and been offered a lot more than 200k. Probably pissing away a huge asset with an extreme lack of foresight. Edited February 4, 20224 yr by Sindre

I don't resent him for trying to earn as much as he can. We can't break our structure for him. We didn't do it even for Hazard even though he was the highest paid at that time. If PSG are offering 400k+, by all means he can leave.

I don't blame footballers one bit for cashing in on their asset. While 200k compared to 400k is very unlikely to see Rudiger himself live paycheck to paycheck anytime soon it could be the difference between setting up 3 generations of his family or 4.
February 4, 20224 yr Maybe I’m the only one but I don’t think he is leaving. He’s spoke about his sons being born in London and loving it here, so he probably wants to stay. I think he’s pushing Chelsea as far as he could before accepting. After all he said he’s doing what’s best for his family and maybe he actually wants 200k a week. A lot of reports are saying an offer closer to 200k a week, not actual 200k. For all we know, he could be 20/30k away from signing.
February 4, 20224 yr If he’s got better offers from PisSG or Real Madrid, for god’s sake man, go to Madrid, at least they are proven winners and not just a bunch of whingeing losers. But, he’s never going to be as loved as he is here in any of those two teams.

What happens when James & Mount decide to do the same, and start demanding £200k/w? The club’s commercial revenue growth has slowed down, and we aren’t pulling enough money in through the gates because of our small stadium compared to our rivals. Our wages are already spiralling out of control.
