Antonio Rudiger

Rudiger will never be a galactico player, he’s not good enough.

He’s an absolute boss in this formation but when we go 4 at back, he’ll return to old self.

These are my thoughts as well, particularly if you are playing expansive football. He is a very proactive defender so he can be sucked out of position easily. Note the Salah goal as a case in point. That said it can go the other way as we saw with Pulisic's goal. All about using him in the correct way, but he is not at the level of the very elite defenders and certainly not in a CB pair playing expansive football where the defence will be stretched.

I like it when he gets bored of passing around the back and just charges up the pitch with the ball which would, of course, be suicidal in a back four! :laugh2:

I still maintain he ends up staying, he wants to stay, the board want him to stay and the coach does too. It all comes down to meeting in the middle. He wants a higher wage that's fine we can still increase our offer. I can see why £140k wouldn't be enough for a player who just won the ucl and is probably going to get his last long term deal I still think he signs if we offer say 170k.

Nah, he's gone, same with Christensen. I just hope we have a few replacements lined up because our CB options are going to be extremely thin by the end of the season. I just hope Thiago Silva has another season in him with us, because if he leaves as well, then we really are screwed.

With Dave, Rudiger, Christensen and possibly Silva going it's a great chance for Tuchel to rebuild our defence into a back four, it could be a blessing in disguise.

Yeah but it's going to be his wind down season, no way he can keep up this hectic schedule of modern football.

It's frustrating though because it just feels like we are rebuilding all over again. It's hard to compete for league titles when you are constantly rebuilding.

I try to think of it as "evolving" rather than "rebuilding" !

Losing him, Dave and Thiago (to an extent, will have to be rested a lot) certainly leaves a huge gap in experienced leadership on the pitch. If additionally Jorgi would be dropped, like a lot here for example wish for, there would be noone left. That looks grim no matter the talent you bring in and certainly would mean a big step backwards first.

So what Matt Law said is

Rudiger wants to stay

Has a big offer from Real (could be over)

We haven't matched the money they are offering

Rudiger probably waits for us to offer bigger or get a new offer from someone else.

He has time on his side

Yes think Rudiger is good in a three, poor in a back four.

Suspect when he goes we will really miss him in the dressing room suspect he is a big character,

The 3 definitely maximises his talents and he has been excellent in it, but was he not quite solid in a back 4 under Sarri? Obviously he had a terrible run under Lampard but even Lampard toyed with a back 3 at times. Rudigers poor form may not have solely been down to the formation.

I think we still have a chance to keep him at the bridge. I am not convinced we need to match Real's wages. Obviously we will need to improve on our offer to Rudiger but if he wants to stay then hopefully a compromise can be reached.

I rate Rudi and as much as I think he's talented, career wise, I think he'd flop at a new club, especially if they don't play a similar way to us.

Never really rated him under Conte, Sarri or Frank. Seems like Tuchel was the one that turned him into a world beater. Think for himself it'd be risky going to a new club
