Absolutely beautiful display by us. Solid, creative, powerful, clever, pacy, controlled. I thought our guys would be nervous but they were ready to beat one of the best teams in Europe. Confidence will be sky high.

City will be much different so I wouldn't draw too much to conclusions on that result but this performance wont hurt us.

I don't take that as a valid reason to be honest, it's not like they don't have any experience of playing on other pitches.

We were the better team, it's as simple as that.

Oh not at all was i saying that we didn't completely outplay them, we were incredible! Im just saying that there is a slight possibility that it may not have felt like a completely normal home game to them, compared with their old stadium thats all.

this was a complete performance, havnt seen a display like this away in Europe for many years, maybe since that display in the San Siro

We played a pretty good game at a very good Valencia in 2007 I recall, Essien with the winner I think.

Also 5-0 in Instanbul v Galatasary in '99 was an incredible result, as back then teams  didn't do that to them there.

I only had the radio commentary on Radio 5live and a pathetically short highlights section on Itv to go on but it sounded like a tremendous performance by our boys in Madrid last night. Does anyone know a source where I can see the whole game or extended highlights please ?

Anyone knows how our fans reacted to Fernando? In front of the TV looked like we went absolutely crazy. Anyway, hope he gets what he deserves at the Bridge - standing ovations nothing less.

Well I was in the away section and we all cheered him on the pitch, seems everyone has a soft spot for him

Funnily enough the fans were singing the Denis wise scored a beautiful goal song

I watched the second half today for the second time. I must say that after all Cahill was playing quite well defensively. So apologizies for always complaning his playing. Offensively he is not offering a lot.

I never realised how well we played until I got home and watched, I'm an advocate for live football as you see what's happening off the ball more but the away section is miles up and obscured by a net, doesn't make for great viewing. It was obvious we were dominating play but like I said didn't truly appreciate how good we were until I got back and watched it.

Which is why when I get home from a game when I flick through the match thread it's like I've seen a different game!! Players like Willian who work so hard off the ball away from the camera get moaned at for a bad cross or pass. If people watched players work off the ball to make a good team performance when watching tv they might sometimes change their minds about overall performance

There may be something in Atletico getting a bit long in the tooth but the real story is that our football exhausted them. We got our just desserts and it will deservedly go down in the annals of Chelsea folklore as a great night of football.

P.S. I see that Giles Smith on the official Chelsea site referenced my Roy of the Rovers comparison. There may have been an acknowledgement but I didn't see it ;-)

Totally agree you'll never appreciate a number 9 for example fully until you see him in person, same with defensive players keeping shape and cutting out the channels.

I only got to a few games last year and seeing kante in the flesh is always another experience, phenomenal player, but it also depends where you're sitting if you are longside in a good seat it's the best place to understand the game, away section is normally crap viewing, especially last night the away section is miles up and back and a big net in the way.

To me I kept seeing that the link up between cesc over to morata even hazard kept getting snuffed too easily by atletico players crowding the area in the middle in front of the box, looked frustrating game side but in the tv everything looked much smoother.

You also could see how high a line they had at times with no outfield players in their half, also at the end it was obvious we had to push out more, we were inviting a bit too much pressure, don't think that showed as much in the replays I watched.

Im not sure if Alonso was just really tired at the end when shooting towards us I had seen him before and he was pretty slow but last night second half he looked nearly immobile, few times tracking back he was miles off the pace, I was surprised griezman couldn't employ him and Garry for pace, that's another player btw when he was shooting our side first half, it's scary every time he makes a run, first time I've seen him live, the way the guy moves is another level.

Because ive only watched bits of the game I didn't see how VM looked first half, to me he was basically out of the game for huge periods waste of a position.

I think when I get time  I'll watch the full 90.

They were probably a little complacent to begin with, given their recent form, but once they saw they were up against a load of hungry lions, they couldn't raise their levels enough. They tried, though, clearly.

At several points they had seven or eight players in or around the box, trying to score.

They just couldn't handle it in the end.

Did not really seem complacent.

We were simply better. Hazard was unplayable and Baka and Kante physically overpowered a team whose USP is their physicality.

Watched the whole game again on Chelsea TV last night. Its interesting to see the game without the intensity and pressure and I started to come to the view that Athletico didn't play very well. I still don't know if Chelsea forced them to play poorly but they didn't pressure Chelsea on the ball anywhere near enough. There seemed to be a lot of space for Chelsea to play into but Athletico didn't close down. They started to back off after about 3 minutes into the match and we got them on the back foot. They never recovered and had to respect the quality of Chelsea's play. Griezman for all the hype was disappointing and over hit a number of balls across our box.

Aside from the hard work put in by Chelsea I thought man for man we had far more quality. Hazard, Kante and, on this performance, Morata are simply world class and Athletico had no answer. They couldn't live with Hazard at all. Morata's quality is starting to become apparent. He really is a super player. His first touch can be excellent, he gets into good positions, he can finish with his head and feet and when you see him running down defenders it is really exciting. If he can keep this going I think he could become the best centre forward in the Premier League. Lukaku seems to have improved but he hasn't yet played against a decent team and I suspect when the pressure comes his first touch will desert him, as it has in the past. Morata gets better every time I see him. His hold up play is getting better and this is crucial in the premier league. Kante has such a big impact on games. He can snuff out attacks with the deftest of interceptions and focusses on the ball when going into the tackle. His confidence is so high at times it looks like he could beat teams on his own. He must be worth more than double what we paid for him.

We ran our socks off and have very little time to recover for City. We did manage to rest Willian, Pedro, Rudiger and Christenson so there will be some legs but I think City will be more of a challenge. Mendy is already out with an ACL ligament injury but more importantly there are reports that Aguero was in a car accident in Amsterdam last night and has sustained injuries. Apparently his taxi hit a lamppost and he has a rib injury. Whatever, we must turn up again.

World class performance from the whole team apart Fabregas. And what a result at the end, this team always impresses me as they giveeverything until the last minute. Last action instead of playing long ball Willian played it short, all i saw was the confidence levels reached by the players, playing a tiki taka in the dying minutes against probably the 'best defense' in Europe last couple of years. Come ooooooon you Blues !!!!

Praise from Simeone.

Asked about the defeat to Chelsea last week he added: ‘We had never faced a team with the intensity of Chelsea. We struggled to press them effectively. We improved when (Antoine) Griezmann went on (Tiemoue) Bakayoko and left David Luiz free. But we were imprecise.’

This probably explains why our tanks were on empty three days later.

Yes I think that is a factor, if it wasn't City we were facing I don't think we would have dropped three points, two maybe yet not three.

Interesting he uses the word intensity, which seems to be Conte's buzzword.
