Would cost 3, times that to try and buy a replacement in the summer. At least. A gamble well worth taking. Three years into that deal, I hope we sign him to a new 5 year deal worth double that. But that Media Watch money probably doesn't even by enough for toner cartridges at Cobham, so it's silly. I think, perhaps, you've missed the intended humour of my post...….

Agreed. It would cost more to replace him. The money is there...….No one says Liverpool overpaid for VvD, or that United are about to overpay for Slabhead Maguire. Most supporters wanted him to stay. If that's what it took, then we should just be happy it got done.
July 24, 20196 yr I'm quite happy to say utd are overpaying for Maguire. He's average as f**k. Had a half-decent world cup, is English, that's about it. Not worth anywhere near that kind of money. Sure, he's better than Jones and SMalling, so it's still an upgrade for them, but they are getting rinsed.
July 24, 20196 yr Anyone know how much Jordan sancho is on? No chance it will be 100k. Radford was in 20k a week at 19 years old, then Mbape was on 320 a week at 19, depends how the club see their long term value and how well they use that leverage to negotiate. One things for sure though you negotiate the big wages and play hardball with the club you can’t expect the “he is only a kid give him time” you’re on a mans wage you have to man up. By asking for those wages you’ve changed the dynamics of expectation on you and this is self imposed weight of expectation not we are pressuring the youth, the club probably started off offering him 60, which is about right, push it to a 100 and ask for hazards old number (allegedly) and it changes things.
July 24, 20196 yr It’s quite simple. A player’s worth is defined by what a club will pay him. His age is irrelevant. It’s either pay him or lose him to Bayern, which would be a very bad thing considering our current situation.

True! Young players form can be very up and down, so I'll be interested to see his reaction if he hits a bad patch and is dropped. Mount, will be under nothing like the same pressure and scrutiny and will be able to slowly make his way over the next couple of years.

Well look it’s a professional career with a limited window of time to earn, I get wanting to make as much as you can, anyone who says its greedy is a hypocrite because if they had the chance to make more money everyone of them would within reason. However I think as a young player it’s counter productive to put that much pressure on yourself, personally I think if he took 60k and whatever shirt number was available he would take some the pressure off himself and can develop properly and come back in a year or two and say look we need to renegotiate this contract. What he has done has put pressure and expectation on himself from now and as you say if he hits a bad spot and gets criticism how does he react. Many youth players fold and just never reach their potential because of being unable to cope with the pressure, in my opinion it would have been a better route to start a bit more modest and grow into it. Whats worse is he probably had not much say in it and it was his brother pushing for the high wages, now we can’t know for certain but it seems perhaps his greed and inexperience as an agent has put his brother in a position that is probably a more difficult one that was good for him.

July 25, 20196 yr It seems Bayern have turned their full attention to Sane which means they must have had indications/been told this is no longer happening. I seen sky reported £180k a week. That’s ludicrous, £100k I could stomach and is the more widely reported figure so hopefully that’s closer to being accurate. I have no idea how Bayern get away with what they do in the media. It’s blatant tapping up, I’m surprised Chelsea/City haven’t complained to FIFA. Imagine this was an English club being so vocal about getting a player from another country, FIFA would be all over it with sanctions.

I've been under the impression that 'tapping up' was only an english FA thing. For example Barcelona have been very egregious in their pursuits of players, with countless comments on international duty or players putting barcelona shirts on other clubs players on international duty but no one really reports them over it.

July 25, 20196 yr Isn’t tapping up more about clubs approaching and trying to influence players in secret? That’s a bit different to clubs/managers publicly declaring an interest in a player, which obviously isn’t as bad because it gives the other club a chance to react.

I think in the case of Bayern (and the way Barca and Real et al) its the way they go about it, normally you would contact the club prior to making any statement about being interested in a player, the way that some of the big mainland Europe teams go about it is in a bid to unsettle the player before starting negotiations. July 25, 20196 yr You are only tapping up if you speak directly with the player without their clubs permission. Nowadays everything happens through their agents which isn't illegal.

I wasn’t aware of that I must admit, I find the way all of these clubs talk so openly about other teams players in an attempt to unsettle them really unprofessional. The Griezmann saga is a great example, Barca clearly had an agreement in place with him well before that release clause was reduced. I’m glad Atletico are willing to go toe to toe with them as it’s a shocking way to act towards another football club. 2 hours ago, RIP Mourinho said: This is why to me Bayern are my most hated foreign team. Lacks professionalism as well. 12 minutes ago, big blue said: I dont think it should be illegal, it is impossible to regulate, and it happens on most transfers. I don’t recall Chelsea managers/chairmen ever being so brash about signing players and bids we’ve made on players. The talking to agents etc I can believe we’ve done and many other clubs as well but the way Bayern come out in to the open media and actively try to unsettle players so that they force a move or they can get them on the cheap is a bridge too far for me. I’ll be delighted when CHO officially signs even if he doesn’t become world class just to know we’ve stuck the finger up to Bayern despite their best efforts.

The player and his representatives will only be brought in for discussions with the potential purchasing club once the two clubs have agreed a fee."
