To be honest, I’d put Morata as equal to Bakayoko last season, performance wise.

Laughable, how many goals did Morata get this year? 17? I don’t think Bakayoko managed to make 17 passes to Chelsea players last year, Morata was bad but Bakayoko was beyond honking.

And yet Fernando was great in big occasions.

Winning the corner vs Bayern Munich for the equalizer, vs Barcelona in semis, scoring in 1/16,1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and the final in Europe League, game winner vs Man City in At, Arsenal away for 1-2 victory.

Don't see Morata getting to this impact. Fernando was generally bad, but he was trying hard and got his moments.

So Morata is getting slated for not scoring enough goals and we’re saying Torres was better because... he won a corner?! Come on now.

that was a great hustle in crucial moment. Everybody knew we could score only from corner in this CL run.

When Morata starts to show the passion and commitment Fernando did, when he scores so many crucial goals in latest stages and big matches, I will put him  along torres.

But right now he is on Mateja Kezman's level.

If the only way to make Morata look decent is by comparing him to Torres then we should definitely get rid.

How about comparing him to a great striker who played for Chelsea and scored 100 goals for us...

Drogba 1st season 41 app 16 goals

2nd season 41 app 16 goals

Morata 1st season 48 app 15 goals

I think there is clearly a player in there and it could be that a different style where he isnt so isolated will be the making of him, I think he deserves another season

Everything bar the finishing is good. Hold up, link up play, creativity, off the ball movement, positioning, work rate and dribbling ability are all there. Just when he has time to think he fluffs his chances. He needs to work on it a lot in training.

Difference being we wasn’t relying on Drogba to score goals.

Him and Lampard linked up a lot and Frank was arguably the one tasked with getting the lions share of goals.

With Robben and Duff in the wide areas we had bigger goal threats across the team as a whole than last seasons set up where we were geared towards getting Morata to score.

I miss those days. :(

Too right, best set of wingers we’ve had during the entire Roman era, that Joe Cole was in the squad too just made it all the better. We’ve never got close to having that amount amount of quality in the wide areas since.

Would love for us to sign someone left footed, with real quality to play down the right, cutting inside and having a pop at goal from 20 yards out or further. Bailey looks a great prospect but whether we’re actually in for him or not is another question.

Hold up?

He can't hold his water. As soon as he feels any contact he crumbles to the ground as if he has been pole axed.

I also don't see the work rate either

Strength: About as strong as a wet paper bag.

Shooting: Only on right foot, only in 6yd box, only on left side of 6yd box, only away at Stoke.

Movement: Brilliant at walking back to the bench, love that part of his game.

Giroud is a good alternative option and can also help support a main striker if needed.

Trouble is he isn't fast enough to keep up with the fast paced players beside him on breakaway's etc and neither has Higuain, whereas Morata can.....stupid move to sell him IMO after one season, if he wants to leave for other reasons fair enough, but not to replace with Higuain needs someone younger and with pace.

A sight Chelsea fans become all too familiar with last season was Morata collapsing to the floor and then appealing to the red for a non existent foul.

His lack of strength and hold up play really held him back and added to his ineffectiveness in front of goal just made many of his appearances painful to watch.

I'm kind of hoping that Zola can sort him out.

It's nice when strikers can do all those lovely things: hold-up, off the ball movement, making scrambled eggs, hoovering the flat... It's also nice when they just score lots of f***ing goals.

I do believe Sarri is capable of magic and he may well turn one of the current bunch into scoring machines, but in the spirit of fantasy football type banter - would be nice to get a striker who has done the goal-every-other-game for a few seasons in their career...

But that was the problem, people used Morata's goals per hour stat at RM as a glowing light to some undiscovered talent, and converted that information into "he's World class". Even i fell for it all, we all did.

Then you're in the minority. I don't know how anybody could really asses their performances as equal. Bakayoko offered nothing last season and shows he has a long way to go, Morata however, there is potential there.

Hyperbole, first half of the season his hold up play and link up play was very good.

No it's not, I watched him all season and bar a month or two his hold up and general play have been well below par.

A purple patch for a few months doesn't change anything.

I think there’s a misconception that Morata isn’t strong.  I’m sure he is strong, he just doesn’t use it, and has never had to use it before, like he needs to in the PL.  There’s a difference.

But a football season itself isn't that many months... So a few good months or not regardless he did show quality in a very bad season. Is Morata the main culprit for last season? No, there are many players who are guilty of underperforming.

He was non existent for the majority of the season, that's the point being made.

No one said he was the main culprit did they? All people on here have been doing is pointing out his form, general play and goal scoring have been very poor for a £60 million and record singing for our club. We expected more and rightly so

Morata has been a huge let down thus far and there is just no getting away from that.

It's not like he is the only one either being pulled up for it, go have a read at the Willian and Bakayoko threads if you think that.

But he wasn't, he was non-existent in January and onwards, before then he did reasonably well. So "majority of the season" is a big stretch.

I've already said Morata has had a woeful season, but can people please stop exaggerating the situation. Already I'm seeing people comparing him to Torres and Bakayoko.

People didn't start disliking Morata until the Arsenal away game when he missed 3 clear cut chances, that was in January.

It's not a big stretch at all, for the majority of the season he has been poor. Maybe your "reasonably well" isn't what others would class as acceptable for a record transfer player

A misfiring big money striker and record fee being compared to a former misfiring big money striker and record fee....who would have thought it?

The transfer fee doesn't mean anything in this day and age, Liverpool just signed a goalkeeper for more than that price.

His first season, a bad season but his first season nonetheless in a very bad season. He was good in 2017, 2018 he was bad and he was injured throughout a lot of it. So if he was bad for the "majority" I'll say that's an exaggeration. Not good enough no, I think everyone has a good point that he wasn't good enough. His finishing was always his main let down, even in 2017 he was missing a lot of chances but he was also scoring goals to make up for it. It was when he stopped scoring goals his performances started to drop. To say he had absolutely no hold-up play or anything is an absurdity, is this still the same man who absolutely bullied Manchester United?
