Please, enlighten us where you found this talent. If I may ask for an answer without highlights/single saves, would be good.

Obviously some of my statement is based on things he’s done, so actually showing his ability in action would make perfect sense.

But to indulge you, there’s clear precedent set with former players of ours looking complete sh*t here and then going on to have success elsewhere. Seems to happen more with Chelsea than with other PL clubs.

Look, he’s not destined to be one of the best in the world. But there is definitely talent there. He’s short on confidence. In addition to that, I’m sure he feels a lot of pressure. Probably wasn’t the ideal type of person to become the worlds most expensive keeper. He has not been good enough and I’ll be happy to see him replaced. At least he didn’t sulk around and barely try like that f**king mug Morata did.

It’s a complete cop out to say he is not talented and has no potential. He’s got some areas he need to improve on massively but at the same time I think he performed below his actual level. He’s not as bad as he showed this season and I would not be surprised if he went back to Spain, regained his confidence, and is Spain’s number 1 for awhile.

But again, he does not have a future with Chelsea and I’ll be happy to see him go.

Last season he was generally considered by this forum to be adequate at worst.

He was certainly good at passing and coming off his line to make Neuer-like saves.

The passing ability still remains, but there are three problems: 1) his positioning has deteriorated, so he's being beaten by long shots that he would not have necessarily been beaten by last season, 2) his loss of confidence has made him second-guess himself so he's lost that Neuer-like ability to act as a sweeper keeper by instinctively coming off his line and 3) his lack of wrist strength means that he parries balls near where opposition players are.

It hasn't worked out and he needs to replaced for his own good as much as ours, but there's a bit of revisionism on this forum regarding his performances while at this club. He was nowhere near this bad last season.

It is inevitable that he will show up as a world class keeper somewhere else.

He hasn't been for us, that's what counts. So it's fine he may be terrific somewhere else, preferably at a club we won't play against.

No your right, he became a top flight and international keeper by pure luck, all his career from youth to first team to international he's managed to hoodwink every coach he's had...

He's been poor for us, his confidence is shot but that doesn't mean he is talentless.

Does it? I think his passing is average at best. How many hasn't he passed straight to the opposition for a massive chance for them?

It doesn't matter as he's going and i feel a bit bad for feeling that he's got no redeeming qualities as a goalkeeper but that's just how he's performed. And a Neuer type of sweeper-keeper he definitly never was.

He’s quite clearly a talented keeper whose confidence is completely shot, who has had a tough season and made mistakes, along with a defense that has underperformed in front of him. I’m sure he will have success but it likely will not be with Chelsea. Unfortunately a perfect storm of circumstances for it not to work out and I wish him well with whatever comes next.

Clearly a talented keeper? That's exactly what he's not, as a keeper he lacks any natural talent, nothing is natural, I've said before on here, he's like an outfield player who goes in goal at the end of training, everything from technique to all the basics just pass him buy.

You're right; it's no big deal at the end of the day, but what sort of keeper do you think he was?

Certainly not a Courtois-style shot-stopper?

I certainly never said that he was equivalent in ability to Neuer, more that his style approximated his far more than it did a traditional shot-stopper.

I don't think him misplacing passes ala Joe Hart has been much of a factor in his decline. Complaints have (rightly) abounded RE his concentration/positioning/frailty/command of the box, but not necessarily his passing.

I think he was meant to be a goalkeeper suited to possession-style football. Like Allison.

Problem being that Allison is actually good and Kepa is really bad.

We ended up buying him because we were in panic-mode. That's all you can say really. A really expensive blunder but one the club will just have to take on the chin.

The weak wrists are as  basic a flaw as a boxer being born with a glass chin.

Probably needs a move back to Spain to regain his confidence.

Done OK last season but was a liability this season and opposing teams knew it.

Wrong time and wrong league for him.

He’ll be fine eventually and we’ll be better off with a better keeper.

Everyone will be happier in the end.

This shows the danger of selecting a keeper based mainly on his passing attributes and ability with his feet instead of looking at his all round game and ignoring the things that make a decent keeper. Saves, reflexes, ability to dominate his area, command a defence all these appear to be way down the list with Kepa. He looks like a youth team player who has been thrown in at the last minute. I can honestly say that he is one of the worst keepers I've seen in a Chelsea shirt, Tommy Hughes would give him a run for his money. It isn't his fault we paid such an exorbitant fee for him, he appears to have been a signing that Sarri wanted and the club backed the manager though the 18m that Madrid pulled the plug on the deal appears to be nearer his value. It will be interesting to see if he can resurrect his career elsewhere though many a keeper once their confidence struggle to regain it again.

Can anybody remember a reason being given by the club for giving him a 7-year contract? That seems an absurdly long period.

Financial reasons. In the books you spread the transfer cost over the length of the contract. So it was almost certainly for FFP-reasons.

Ah, I see. Thanks. Shame it may make it more difficult to loan him out (if selling is not an option) without subsidizing his wages big time.

My next door neighbour informs me Onana is definitely going to Germany (and Tagliafico is staying at Ajax). He used to have an Ajax ST, so he knows.

Areola it is
