July 7, 20233 yr One thing I'll give Kepa is that he's never actually complained even when he was benched. He's never sulked or kicked up a fuss, he just got on with it and whenever he was called upon he always looked like he was ready and wanted to seize the moment. However, I still to this day can't forgive him for that cup final.

Making a mistake and apologising for it shows leadership, something a lot of use could learn from. He has the experience to show younger players “Don’t be like me, don’t do what I did” How many of us who made a mistake, a misjudgement like that would apologise or just double down? He served his punishment, Sarri forgave him we moved on the club moved on. He’s shown since that mistake committed and leadership. “”Let he who hasn’t made a mistake cast the first stone!!! “”

July 9, 20233 yr So far the board has done an exceptional job in my eyes. Sold off a lot of sh*te that needed selling, and fingers crossed Pulisic and Ziyech are out the door soon. It would be a huge win if we managed to shift Lukaku but I doubt it. But we definitely can't go into the season this bare in the midfield. Need a good solid DM as quickly as possible. Big gamble on whether to bite the bullet on Caicedo, but I say move on if Brighton keeps being unreasonable. It's up to Caicedo to put in a transfer request and spearhead this move if he really wants it. We can't keep letting football clubs rinse us for transfers, we already set a dangerous precedent last season. Edited July 9, 20233 yr by Victor90
July 10, 20233 yr As good as Caicedo is, quality defensive midfielders are a dime-a-dozen. I think Caicedo is attractive because he is an all-action sort of midfielder who can also drive a team, but I think that's a nice-to-have rather than a must-have quality. Just get someone with good defensive fundamentals and let the team adapt to him. We didn't replace Makelele by trying to replace him like-for-like because he was an irreplaceably unique. Instead we brought in Essien, a much more dynamic player with a great range of passing. We replaced the dynamic Essien with the slow, methodical, rhythmic solidity of Mikel, then in turn replaced him with a much more creatively-gifted player in Matic, followed by the indefatigable Kante. The one asterisk I have on Caicedo is that while he is undoubtedly a great 1v1 defender, there is not a lot of evidence to show how he would perform holding down the midfield. Kante was rightly criticised when playing a lone DM because he simply drifted out of position way too often and I'm a bit worried that Caicedo would be similar.

Landing Caicedo will be extremely important as the club have been fully focused on him since Ugarte collapses by all accounts. So if we fail to land Caicedo now with everyone flying out for pre-season in less than a week and with midfield being in an absolute state we may be in trouble.
July 11, 20233 yr That would be ideal though most reports said we were interested in both, which makes sense as Ugarte is an example of a purely defensive midfielder who would complement an Enzo/Caicedo midfield while also allowing Lewis Hall/Conor Gallagher as respectable depth/competition for the 'attacking' spots too. Without a proper DM, I feel it would be like playing Kroos/Modric without Casemiro or Lampard/Ballack without Essien; potentially still good, but not as dominant and with some glaring weaknesses. In saying that, I'm still hopeful that Reece James is that DM. While undoubtedly a fine fullback his style of play is so reminiscent of Essien at his peak, possibly even a little better defensively and technically - hell Essien even played as a barnstorming RB during that period too!
July 12, 20233 yr Crazy to think if we sell Gallagher for 50m and Lukaku for 30m we'd have made over 300m in sales this window.
July 12, 20233 yr Reports we’re prepared to accept substantially less for the shirt sponsor(25m). Isn’t marketing supposed to be what the management team is exceptionally strong at?

Pretty embarrassing when you consider we've had a year to search for a new sponsor and the best we've managed is a shady NFT company, to which the fans outrage had them turn it down.

We did get Paramount but it was turned down by the league, for some reason. So not that embarrassing.
