Watching the Leeds and Wigan and once again have to say, what a performance! Been watching the whole game. Relegation threatened Wigan with 10 men have beaten promotion chasing Leeds on their own patch and he has been the standout player along with Gavin Massey. Surely James will be given MOTM. Been outstanding and the commentator cannot stop running with compliments for the player. What a player we have on our books. Bossed the game.

On his first taste of senior football

“Football is everything. When I first came to Wigan, I didn’t know what to expect. When I got my first opportunity to play, I gradually built confidence. It was a big jump. I have seen a lot of players go on loan and then they haven’t been able to cope physically.

"I think that’s one of the strengths in my game, to be honest, and I am happy to be playing week in, week out in such a strong league. You don’t really know what level you are at until you actually play it. You can’t make that judgement until you are actually in it.

"I think when I was 16, 17, I started to find my feet and start improving. Last year it was the first year that I looked at the players who went out on loan. I saw Ola Aina, he played 40 games on loan last season and went to Hull City.

"I looked at him because I play in the same position and I wanted to replicate what he has done. I saw Wigan and the way they played last year in League One and I liked the way they played. I thought that this could be the right place, thankfully it was.

"Anyone can say you are going to play before you move, but once they see how good you are, then that’s another story."

On Callum Hudson-Odoi

"You can’t pay too much attention to it, you need to carry on playing your football and, at the end of the season, see where you are. Callum has had a few opportunities to play in Chelsea’s first team, and he has managed to impress.

"So, fair play to him and he took his opportunity. Getting that opportunity is a good start and then taking them is down to him. He is a quality player and I have played with him since he was nine years old. I know what he can do and how good he is. He has stayed the same person the whole way through."

On training with the England first-team squad

"It was a great experience. The level was very good, and they are all high Premier League players. I was surprised, and I didn’t expect, I was glad I got the opportunity. It was an honour, but it was also just another training session and football is football.

"The quality of the players is high, the tempo and the way they play. Harry Kane is very good. He was up against me a couple of times in the session."

On studying Chelsea's senior pros

"I was told to watch a few players, but they weren’t in my position. It was Lampard, Terry and Drogba. I had to look at them. They are all in a different position. I tried to take a few things from their game and put it in mine.

"It was mostly just about how they conduct themselves and how professional they are. This is what I want to do, and if you are not professional about it, then you won’t get as far as you want"

On who he would compare himself to

"My position is right-back, but if I have to play another position, I am not fazed by it. I will offer to play in any position. As a right-back, a big part of my game is crossing, and I like getting forward. I am also half decent at defending.

"I think you could say that [I am similar to Kyle Walker], if you didn’t say him, then I wouldn’t know who to compare me to."

Apparently Man United have shown a bit of interest in him following his impressive season with Wigan but a couple of the papers have reported that we're planning on bringing him back to be involved in the squad next season.

Best thing we could do is sell Zappacosta and have a clear path into the first team because if the lad is battling with two seasoned right-backs he's not going to get any playing time and will consider his future elsewhere.

If we're serious about giving the youth players a chance we've got to give them a realistic chance of playing.

Some quotes from a Wigan Forum:

Reece James is to be made Captain for the day in the Millwall game.
A fitting tribute to an outstanding player, well done Cook for making this happen.

Reece, even at just 19 years old, is fully deserving of the armband. He's a very very special talent, the like of which only gets seen a handful of times in a generation. We'll never see him back at Latics. That's just life, and as much as I'm gutted about it, it's just reality. Hate to say it, but Reece James is better than Wigan Athletic, and I say that advisedly after 20 plus years supporting the club. Frankly, it's been a privilege and an honour to see him play for us this season. He's not just a future England player, but a future England captain, without a shadow of a doubt. His talent is beyond question, but his attitude, his mentality, his temperament... Second to none.

Reece James is a football icon in the making, and I honestly feel honoured to have had the privilege of seeing him play this season.

There aren't enough good words to describe the lad. I'm excited to see what he does in his career, wherever that may take him.

It's no 'gesture' this honour has been fully earnt on merit, the lad has led by example all season. Will be sorely, sorely missed.

Well what a final game from young Reece....as usual a had a great game. Some subliminal long passes during the game alongside his usual strong commanding game play. Was a neat substitution towards the end to give him a fitting farewell from the fans. Oh what I'd give for another season loan from Chelsea altho I'm wondering if he will be part of their squad next season or loaned out to a lower tier prem club??
