Cavani

Featured Replies

He wouldn't be my first choice as a back-up striker but if Lampard wants him then I'm okay. Last thing I'd want is for us to go on another cycle of the media going at each other about the board not buying a manager's targets. It happened two times out of our last three managers and the end product wasn't good.

Meh, I’m worried he could end up like Higuain.

Higuain was constantly out of shape and showed signs of decline.

Cavani is still an elite striker who is reaching the twilight of his career, his movement is up there with the best in the world. Can almost imagine how well he'd feed off Reece's crosses

This would be a big signing for 18 months.

yes, Cavani is in great shape, few injuries lately but who hasnt.  It's a no brainer signing. At £10m too?  I'd slap a bid in tomorrow

If he joined and performed anywhere near what he can, he is a massive, massive boost - and most certainly would start his fair share of games.  I think we can assume safely that people are not being idiots and suggesting Tammy is better than Cavani, so the latter would be on the bench every week, right?

I dont think people are suggesting Tammy is better than him. I think people are just concerned that Tammy, after having a good first half of the season, will be dropped for Cavani. That is, the previous status quo of youth getting dropped for established players continuing. I personally don't see that happening and its going to be the other way around where Cavani will have to earn his spot in the team since he's the new signing. If Cavani can out score Tammy then he will rightfully deserve his spot to start and it will add a dose of healthy competition in our attack which is something we have lacked for the last few years years. Usually there's just one striker (or no striker) scoring and when he gets injured we are in trouble.

No reason they cannot play together.

spot on, just strange to see social media awash with people not wanting Cavani because theyd rather tammy play every week. There is wanting youth to be involved, but then there is being silly about it

Posted in Random Rumours re: Cavani and signing older players. Should probably be in here instead.

Looking at the other options who might be available in January such as Piatek, Dembele. I think he is a better player still at 32. I'm also not convinced he'll be blocking us from signing perfect striking solution in the summer because it doesn't exist. Werner has his challenges and others such as Osimhen are perhaps still a bit unproven.

Critical difference between other old strikers we've purchased is that we're not asking him to be the talisman. Merely to play a role with Tammy. I think Cavani can do that for at least two seasons from what I've seen of him in the last 12 months. Play in a 2 up top or off the bench or in certain games. He could do very well.

This is all assuming he is interested of course!

I'd definitely take him.  He would be a great signing and even at almost 33 he is still a deadly striker that would get us goals.  He would be second choice striker so would still get plenty of minutes and his experience could be invaluable for Tammy to improve even more.  An 18 month deal would be perfect tbh.

I can’t see Tammy throwing toys out of the pram if we sign Cavani. He’ll carry on being our first choice, on merit. Now there’s Cavani lurking in the background, knowing the quality he possesses, Tammy has to step his game up and start taking these chances he’s been missing.

Think it’s a winner winner situation tbh, even if Cavani flops it’s still better competition for Tammy.

Not just competition. A good but non threatening alternative to Tammy can take some of the pressure off. I guess beside price it’s speed, injuries and motivation. It’s the pace of the PL that will be an issue but Cavani has played in some good sides.  I agree with Spiller that in no way does it stop us buying say Werner in Summer.

I have always admired Cavani, especially his off the ball movement, intelligence in finding space and the fact that he knows where the old onion bag is.

But, I agree with most on here that we have tried this before, recently with Higuaín and it failed dismally. If it really is Cavani or nothing in January, then nothing is not an option, so lets get Cavani ASAP !

But (again) I would rather we test Lyon's nerve with a really decent bid for Dembele. He looked the real deal at Celtic (I know its a poor League) but since then has gained experience and is still only  23

Tammy needs help, and a bit of competition will only do him some good. At Tammy's age, he could still learn from an elite striker. Cavani will cost lots in terms of salary, but he's a good option for the next 12-18 months, and it's not going to stop us sign another striker in 6-12 months time. We have seen plenty of youth this season, reckon proven skills and experience will benefit the team right now

Yup, and it’d make a lot more sense if we signed a premier league striker, even if not as good as Cavani. At least we’ll know what to expect.

I distinctly remember us signing a certain striker from a certain PL club nine years ago for a record fee at the time and who had been phenomenal in the league prior to joining us. His consequent struggles at CFC were very well-documented. At times he reminded me of a horse with a broken leg that needed to be put out of his misery.

My point is, there are no guarantees. We can sign a PL proven striker and he may struggle to make an impact, and the other way around. I think Cavani is a good risk to take. Yes, he's past his prime and will command big wages, but short term (1.5-2 seasons) he can be a great option to have. Sign him as a replacement for Giroud, both the same age, but Cavani is on a different level to the Frenchman in terms of ability. Never heard anything negaive about his attitude on or off the pitch, a solid pro and he won't get in a way of Abraham's development but could be a great example for Tammy on how to play the centre forward role. Not to mention our busy shedule and the fact that we'll need all the help we can get in front of the goal, given our recent struggles.

Then sign somebody good and in the right age bracket to replace Michy in the summer and we're set for the next season.

Good post, as usual. I think it's a difficult one but I can see the sense in it. First of all, someone like Cavani comes, all the young players get a buzz. It could potentially help them I believe, and help us. It might just up everyone's game. As for Tammy, I can't see this as a negative. Cavani is 33 in two or three weeks, he's had injury problems these last two years, he'd be new to the Prem. He'll be taking the burden off Tammy a little bit rather than walking in and taking all his minutes. If he provides a bit of competition for Tammy, good. Tammy's young, he needs the competition and maybe we shouldn't be relying upon him quite so much. As a replacement for Giroud on a short-term deal, it may not be the worst idea, it may give us added firepower, and it may give Tammy somebody to learn from. Lampard has always said his priority in this window is goals. Maybe this guy can provide some. Besides, if it's what Frank wants, then we should go for him. Frank has invested a lot in youth, if he wants an old-timer to join the group, then I say we back his judgement.

It wouldn't surprise me one jot if Mourinho is sniffing around this deal, and he can offer Cavani a guaranteed starting place, at least until the end of the season. Watch this space.

I think Spurs would struggle to satisfy his wage demands, Levy isn't exactly known for his generous nature. I'd be more afraid of United, they've just lost Rashford and unlike Totenham have lots of money and aren't afraid to spend it. In fact, the financial cost required to get this deal done may be the biggest challenge here, given that you're investing a tidy sum in a nearly 33-year old player with recent injury problems and no resale value. Still, for a top club that lacks goal scoring options this is a no-brainer.

If he's handed in a transfer request, then most likely he's already agreed a deal with another club and is just trying to force it through.

Cavani does seem like the typical short term Mourinho striker & I wouldnt be surprised if he ended up at Spurs

As been mentioned above he would be perfect for our requirements currently until we can obtain someone younger in the next window or two

Exactly, A.Madrid where he wants to go.

Quality striker but I’d rather we went for someone like Dembele.

Does anyone seriously think Cavani will be happy to job share striker duties with Abraham.

He’s going to want to go where he’ll be the main man.

His wages won’t be cheap either - it’ll be the very definition of a short term fix.

I dont think he has actually handed one in,  it was just SSN sensationalising a headline because Leonardo said he'd asked to leave.  They are slightly different.

Asking to leave does not instantly point to Atletico Madrid, although id say they will be faves, it could just mean he is fed up of being on the bench and wants game time with Copa America or whatever on the horizon.  He may just fancy a change, or not get on with Tuchel.  Lots of variables

The Standard reported he's on crazy wages and he would need to take a big pay cut. If we kept him on the same wages as he is now at PSG for 18months it would cost us around 50 million all together including a fee.
