Pulisic continues to create chances yet is unable to convert and Werner is having the same problem too. Werner is working hard just not happening, I didn't think he would score the penalty and was surprised he took it. CHO looked very good when he came on and made a good assist. Tammy's first goal had a slice of fortune as it was a deflection from an intended cross by Werner probably going to no-one in the box. Gilmour looked neat in midfield and seemed to work well with Mount today. James good going forward not convincing with defending. Christen looked good today. Emerson was ok. Zouma ok Kepa good and bad, as usual. Ziyech was also good, nice link ups with James and a good attacking intent though shots were poor. Giroud not enough touches on the pitch for me to judge. Lampard - good to see changes yet never convinced defensively we could stop them scoring more. He gets the win which is important keeping the media off his back at least until the next match. Pulisic and Werner need to produce number otherwise you get only their negative Edited January 24, 20215 yr by Bob stark

January 24, 20215 yr Really enjoyable game to watch. Kepa mistake aside, thought we were comfortable for most of it. Should have had a few more goals, but created a lot. The football we played was similar to what we say when at our best last season. I was happy to see us mix up the crossing, too, and tried the get to the byline for cut backs. Much less predictable. The formation was interesting, and I wonder if it's a sign of things to come? Difficult to take too much from a game against a lower league team, but Mount and Gilmour in midfield together looked about as good as I can remember from us this season. They plugged the gaps, pressed very well, supported the attack, and both moved the ball very quickly. Would be interesting to see if we play them ahead of Kante, and stick with 4-3-3, or perhaps bring in Harvertz ahead of them and go 4-2-3-1. Edited January 24, 20215 yr by Hessleboink

Maybe a 4-4-1-1, but basically a 4-4-2 to my eyes. I thought it really worked. Tammy dropped deep to pick up the ball, and found himself in space because Werner was getting in behind the CBs and keeping them occupied. Pulisic kept the width (with James), and Ziyech was dropping into midfield to pick up the ball. Edited January 24, 20215 yr by Hessleboink
January 24, 20215 yr Mount is the new captain, all in for Lampard. Let's hope it works and we finally get some consistency and win a couple of games in a row.
January 24, 20215 yr Good game, it was only Luton, but the play has been quick and fluid. Just what we’ve seen at some points under Frank. I hope the players can keep it up for the next game. Loved the Gilmour Mount midfield, worked well to bring the ball forward. And I thought Werner and Tammy up front combined greatly and were dangerous.

So 442 and tammy dropping deep to pick up the ball is how you get the best out werner, you basically ask him to don't get involve in the buildup and play on the shoulder. The problem this can only work in 442 and 4231 (the am cannot be Havertz, a healthy ruben will be good). But it mean you need your winger to defend better (not sure any of them are at least decent defensively) Edited January 24, 20215 yr by Bob stark
January 24, 20215 yr The last youth team product to score ten or more goals in consecutive seasons was Michael Fillery back in 1982/83, Tammy Abraham has done it last season + this season now. Tammy is the first since Osgood that scored a hat-trick as an academy player in the FA Cup.

January 24, 20215 yr Much Happier with that performance, some good individual displays, Werner, Ziyech, Billy all done well. Billy makes such a difference, always available and passes with a much better tempo which gets the whole team moving a lot more effectively. James and Emerson were much more effective with a slightly different shape and combined well with the players in front of them. Tammy done well with the goals but he has'nt got that naturel striker instinct, he scores but he does'nt sniff goals, like Vardy, Aguero etc he has to gamble more. The thing that pleased me most was the reaction to Luton's goal, we could have easily got nervous and stopped the way we were playing but we did'nt, we kept moving it and kept creating chances which was very positive. Onwards and upwards, back to back home games and a chance to build the confidence KTBFFH

His finishing is good (and improving), but time and time again he's a few yards off an easy finish and it hasn't changed for over a year. In the big games he might only get 1 or 2 chances, and at the moment I'm not confident he'd finish them. It almost feels like a lack of patience sometimes. He's occasionally too keen to get on the ball and gravitates to it when he should be finding space inside the box. Costa was excellent at this, he'd get himself involved in the build up, then as soon as we broke into space, he'd just find space inside the box and be ready to pounce. Im afraid its a naturel thing Hessleboink, Predatory instincts of a striker. You can try and coach it, and strikers that dont have it can work on it to improve their game, but its a naturel thing. Linaker, Vardy, Ian Wright, Clive Allen would score a third of their seasons tally inside the six yard box, anticipating where the ball will go and being there to pounce. I dont want to be hard on Tammy, he scored a Hatrick, but he could get so many more if he just took more chances.

He has very little space to get it between the keeper and defender and it came to him of a deflection, it was outstanding.

It just seems like such a waste to have somebody who can spot a pass and open up defences so easily played so deep. I'm not saying he should be played in attacking midfield or anything, but I don't think his career should be the Jorginho role either.
January 24, 20215 yr I'm hoping Tammy really does make it, for all of us. He doesn't seem to have that poacher/goal hanger streak in him. I thought there were a good few balls flashed across the 6 yard box and no one was there. In fairness to Tammy he wasn't alone in that. Werner, Pulisic and Ziyech should be taking that gamble at different stages. I thought Timo despite his penalty miss, ran his heart out right up to the end. He needs a ball to hit him on the head and go in while he's trying his boot laces to get some confidence back. I really felt for him when he missed he looked broken.

Cesc, Pirlo, Modric and Thiago are four top examples of players who made a career out of being a deeper player, infact they were actually wasted whenever they played higher up, not the other way round. In the deeper positions you can dictate the entire tempo of a match.
